SUMMARY:Fostering Inclusive Education through Open Educational Practices
DESCRIPTION:There is a widespread consensus that open education encompasses both Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP)\, with the understanding that sharing learning is crucial. According to the Cape Town Open Education Declaration (2007) “…open education movement combines the established tradition of sharing good ideas with fellow educators and the collaborative\, interactive culture of the Internet. It is built on the belief that everyone should be free to use\, customize\, improve and redistribute educational resources without constraint.”. \nTo realise these freedoms\, we must consider open educational practices from a social justice perspective. Questions arise: \n\nCan open education promote inclusivity and diversity?\nWhat guidance does Open Education offer our higher education community?\nAnd what impact does adopting Open Educational Practices have on student learning experiences and teaching practices?\n\nTo address these questions and delve into deeper discussion\, we will kick off UTS 2024 Open Education Week with a panel discussion event to shed light on Fostering inclusive education through Open Educational Practices. On this panel\, we welcome Associate Professor Glenda Cox\, UNESCO Chair on Open Education and Social Justice\, University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Yasser Tamer\, The American University in Cairo (Egypt). Glenda and Yasser will share their insights and experiences to address this topic.

SUMMARY:Maada’oonidiwag – Sharing Anishinaabe pedagogies into a Western OER- presented by Jamie Kechego and Lorie Stolarchuk
DESCRIPTION:Aanii and Biindige! Sharing personal Anishinaabe perspectives when weaving Indigenous Ways of Knowing into Western ways of teaching and learning was central to creating a module within an Open Educational Resource (OER). \nThis session explores lessons learned while creating the OER module on Indigenous Pedagogies\, which included videos\, images\, text\, and exercises. OER Videos were filmed in many settings\, including a visit to a Reserve and Residential School memorial. The videos are embedded into an eCampusOntario project on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) – Inclusivity\, Diversity\, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA). Universities Canada’s principles on Indigenous education recognize that universities across Canada must commit to closing the education gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. \nOut of 13 principles developed in close consultation with Indigenous communities\, principle 11 states that universities need to “recognize the importance of providing greater exposure and knowledge for non-indigenous students on the realities\, histories\, cultures and beliefs of Indigenous people in Canada.” Mino-bmaadizin (the good life) was tied into the module’s design\, knotted with references to nourishing learning spirits beyond the four walls of a classroom by including land-based and place-based learning. Teachings from the Medicine Wheel framework embraced the physical\, emotional\, spiritual\, and mental dimensions. Jaimie shares her personal connection to the Indigenous Pedagogy principle featured in each video. The goal as we advance would be to braid other Indigenous voices and connections to the various topics for future open educational videos.

SUMMARY:Open Educational Resources: Building Equity in Education
DESCRIPTION:What are Open Educational Resources (OER) and what role do they play in building equity into the educational landscape? OER goes beyond cost savings and provides customizable content which can reflect historically marginalized voices and viewpoints. This presentation will provide a foundation on what OER are\, how they are used\, and their importance in equity in education. Practical resources and tips for incorporating diverse content will also be provided.

SUMMARY:Planes\, trains\, and generative AI: Recentering open education values in new technology adoption
DESCRIPTION:Many educators have felt pressure to climb aboard the generative AI train since it came barreling down the tracks. But what happens when we leap into new technologies without first pausing to imagine harms\, such as surveillance\, bias\, and discrimination? Join host Brenna Clarke Gray (Thompson Rivers University) and guest speaker Autumm Caines (University of Michigan – Dearborn) for a conversation about the pedagogical implications of generative AI. Can recentering the core values of the open education movement—equity\, inclusion\, transparency\, and social justice—in our pedagogy help us move forward in a good way? How do we introduce these considerations to our students and empower them to make informed decisions with new technologies? We’ll consider these questions and more in our hour together. \nThis event celebrates Open Education Week (March 4-8\, 2024). It is organized by the BC Open Education Librarians group (BCOEL) and generously sponsored by BCcampus\, with additional support from Kwanlten Polytechnic University\, snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ – Langara College\, and University Canada West. \nNote: registration for this event ended on 03/03/2024.  \nImage courtesty of Tommy Jepsen via Pexels

SUMMARY:Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani presents: “From Access to Justice: Realizing the Transformative Potential of Open Educational Practices”
DESCRIPTION:Despite the transformative potential of higher education\, it still too often reinforces existing societal power hierarchies. As critical educators\, our focus should extend beyond the use of teaching practices that are effective and engaging and encompass the intentional design of learning environments that are inclusive\, antiracist\, and just. \nJoin Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani in this Zoom session as he draws on insights from scholarship and practice in critical pedagogy\, inclusive design\, and open educational practices to share practical strategies through which social justice may be centered in teaching and learning.
