SUMMARY:We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the TU Delft annual We Like Sharing photo competition a bit of idea brainstorming happened in OEG Connect as a call for other individuals\, organizations to remix the idea and run their own version of it. Hence we are doing it here at OEGlobal. \nOur call for photos is: \nFor We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal we invite anyone to share a photograph that communicates a visual metaphor for the potential\, benefits\, characteristics of openly sharing. We seek especially photos from all parts of the world that convey something special about that place. \nIf you would like to participate\, Then\, upload the image and provide the basic information in our We Like Sharing form including title\, location\, how to credit yourself\, a description for web accessibility\, and the Creative Commons license you wish to apply to your photo. \nWe will add them to the We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal flickr album\, with all attribution\, licensing information included. There may or may not be prizes\, but we certainly will be reusing and attribution images in future OEGlobal communications. Sharing is its own reward\, right? \nAnd please follow the TU Deflt We Like Sharing which is already on the calendar for this year’s Open Education Week. \nAnd if you want to run your own WLS (We Like Sharing) from your place on the globe\, we have no rules per se\, but see suggestions in OEG Connect. \nOur call for photos will run the full month of March\, and we will track visits and comments in our flickr album– but we will actually likely just leave it open year round.  Because we like We Like Sharing! \n\nThe image used in this event s one by Bea de los Arcos from the original TUDelft We Like Sharing – Claddagh ring flickr photo by B. de los Arcos shared under a Creative Commons (BY) license.

SUMMARY:University of Edinburgh OER Service: Open Textbook Interview Series
DESCRIPTION:The University of Edinburgh has a long-standing commitment to providing and widening access to high quality online learning opportunities through open education and open educational resources (OER). This is supported by an OER Service and underpinned by our Open Educational Resources Policy that encourages staff and students to use\, create and publish open licensed resources to enhance the quality of the student experience.  \nThis year we’re celebrating Open Education Week by publishing a series of interviews with staff and students across the University who have created and published open textbooks. Open textbooks are books that have been made accessible online free of cost and are also openly licensed to allow free modifications\, use\, and sharing. \nOpen textbooks have long been the common form of open educational resources in North America\, with funding to support this activity\, however to date\, they have not seen extensive uptake in the UK\, where there are different models of textbook use and engagement with OER tends to be supported by learning technologists rather than dedicated OER librarians. There has been renewed interest in open textbooks in the UK over the past five year as institutions face rapidly increasing e-textbook costs as they move away from print materials in response to the pivot to online learning triggered by the COVID pandemic\, and longer-term trends in academic publishing. \nIn our series we speak to open textbook creators across the University of Edinburgh and hear why they decided to go down the open textbook path and what that journey has looked like. We’ll be publishing one interview each day throughout Open Education Week\, but in the meantime here’s a wee introduction to each of our interviewees: \nRebecca Wojturska\, the Open Access publishing officer\, responsible for managing Edinburgh Diamond. Edinburgh Diamond offers free publishing services to support books\, journals and conference proceedings created or led by University of Edinburgh academics\, staff and students. \nDr Jill Mackay\, Senior Lecturer (Veterinary Medical Education) at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies\, with a focus on interdisciplinary research methodology. Dr Mackay is a proponent of open science\, and particularly exploring how education research can adopt open science practices. She has created and published multiple OER\, including the open textbook R@R(D)SVS designed to help staff and students get to grips with with R programming. \nDr Peter Bankhead\, Reader in the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at The University of Edinburgh. Creator of digital imaging open-source software\, QuPath\, which has been downloaded close to half a million times\, cited in about 3\,000 academic articles\, and is used all over the world\, both in academia and industry. Dr Bankhead has published his open textbook Introduction to Bioimage Analysis using GitHub and Jupiter Books. \nDr Nikki Moran\, Senior Lecturer in Music at the ECA. Niki is lead author and presenter of the University of Edinburgh’s Coursera MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)\, Fundamentals of Music Theory\, engaging 300000 active learners and recruiting around 500 new students per week. Fundamentals of Music Theory was the first open e-textbook published on Edinburgh Diamond as part of a pilot project in collaboration with the OER Service. \nMayu Ishimoto is an Architectural History and Heritage student who worked as an Open Content Curator intern with the OER Service over the summer of 2023. Mayu now works one day a week as an intern with the OER Service\, and published the open textbook Birds of Midlothian as one of her summer projects.

SUMMARY:Open Education Week at USask
DESCRIPTION:A series of in-person events and sessions for USask instructors on Open Education \nSince USask began the campaign to support Open Education in the fall of 2014\, USask students have saved more than $5\,000\,000 through instructors supporting and adopting Open Educational Practices (OEP). In most cases\, this has come from instructors switching from commercial textbooks to Open Educational Resources (OER)\, primarily open textbooks. Each year a growing number of USask instructors choose to integrate open pedagogy activities in their courses\, where students are the creators of learning content instead of simply consumers of it. \nOpen Education Week highlights our USask instructors\, staff\, and students sharing their stories and accomplishments from open textbook creation and a new book launch\, how to engage and build OER with on campus supports\, to making the move to include OEP as part of curriculum renewal.

SUMMARY:Accessibility in Open Education with H5P
DESCRIPTION:We continue to celebrate Open Education Week at our second event focussed on Accessibility and H5P in open resources. During this event\, we will be hearing from two fantastic speakers from Australia and Canada. They will share their experiences working on open resources and how to make them accessible and interactive through H5P and Pressbooks. \nDuring this event\, we will:\n\nexplore why accessibility and inclusion are so important to openness\,\ndiscuss why H5P has been adopted for Open Textbooks\,\noutline some of the affordances and barriers to accessibility and openness with H5P\,\nexplain why taking openness as an attitude is important to accessible resources.\n\n\nKey speaker: Nikki Andersen\nNikki Andersen\, Open Education Content Librarian at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)\, champions open educational practices\, specializing in open textbooks via the Pressbooks platform. With a diverse background\, including roles as a Copyright Officer and Diversity and Inclusion Officer\, Nikki edits the Australasian Open Educational Practice Digest. She contributes to CAUL’s Open Educational Resources Professional Development Program Project Team and ASCILITE’s Open Educational Practice Special Interest Group. \nNikki\, who identifies as disabled and Deaf\, advocates for inclusion\, diversity\, equity and accessibility (IDEA)\, recognized by awards for creating accessible digital learning environments. Her work intersects open educational practice\, social justice\, and student success\, highlighted by her editing of the 2022 Australian Edition of Enhancing IDEA in OER. \n\nKey Speaker: Simon Lolliot\nDr. Simon Lolliot\, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia\, earned his doctorate in social psychology at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. His research focuses on the role of intergroup contact in reconciliation and the impact of secondary transfer effect\, “a phenomenon whereby contact with members from one outgroup not only improve attitudes towards that outgroup\, but to other outgroups as well.” At UBC\, he collaborates with Drs. Toni Schmader and Andrew Baron\, exploring ingroup identity\, multiculturalism\, and diversity beliefs. \nSimon introduced H5P activities to UBC’s open psychology textbook\, investigating interactivity’s impact on learning and advocating for screen-reader accessibility. Passionate about optimising teaching materials\, he emphasises H5P’s potential to support inclusive education. \nRegister now via Humanitix

SUMMARY:Library Dialogue | How can we open up our education at WUR?
DESCRIPTION:On 5 March\, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Library is organising a round-table discussion on Open Education. What’s WUR’s vision for Open Education? What are the practical issues that teachers run into when adopting open teaching and learning methods? And what infrastructure and solutions are available to open up our education at WUR? Your opinion is important! WUR teachers\, staff and students are cordially invited to join the dialogue and share their experiences. \n\n\nWhat is Open Education?\nOpen Education aims to enhance the access\, inclusiveness and flexibility of education\, often by using digital technologies and open licenses \nThe cornerstone of Open Education lies in Open Educational Resources (OER). These educational materials are openly licensed to allow everyone to freely use\, adapt and share the resource. OER can include textbooks\, lecture notes\, videos\, quizzes\, and other learning materials. OER are both free of charge and free of legal barriers. Considering this\, they reduce costs for students and enable teachers to adapt the materials to meet their specific students’ needs. \nThe Library Dialogue is taking place within the framework of the Open Education Week 4- 8 March 2024. \nProgramme\nThe Library Dialogue provides space for different perspectives and opinions on how we can open up our education at WUR. We’ll start with presentations by Nicolien Schmaal\, manager of WUR’s Open Science and Education programme\, and Sabien van Harten\, Education Policy Officer Education. \nAfterwards\, we’ll break into small groups to discuss different aspects of Open Education\, including: \n\nCopyright considerations for (open) educational materials\nDrivers and obstacles to the adoption of Open Educational Resources\nSupport and tooling for using Open Educational Resources\nHow to create Open Educational Resources
