SUMMARY:Ready for Take-off? How Emerging Technologies are Fuelling New Approaches Around OER in the UK & the US
DESCRIPTION:Today we are faced with emerging technologies such as (Gen)AI\, which have incredible potential – yet also significant risks and challenges. During this panel session at the Northeast OER Summit\, we will hear from two forward-looking universities in the UK and the US about their views and experiences with (Gen)AI and OER. While both are unique in terms of their local context\, challenges and levels of experience with OER\, they are unified by their ambition to locally grow OER success and by their high expectations for its future. \nFrom this session\, expect to learn more about practical and real-world examples of (Gen)AI use at these two universities and their library today: how it is used to identify OER gaps\, how to understand local OER potential as well as convincing senior leadership to get behind this. Moreover\, expect to walk away with concrete ideas for how we can fuel a scaleable OER future at any institution and why now is the time really for this to take off. \nDuring this panel session\, we will hear from two different institutions in the UK and the US about their views and experiences with (Gen)AI and OER. While both are unique in terms of their local context\, challenges and levels of experience with OER\, they are unified by their ambition to locally grow OER success and by their high expectations for its future. You’ll hear practical and real-world examples of (Gen)AI use\, such as how it is used to identify OER gaps and to understand the potential of OER. \nWe’ll hear from each of the panelists about where they are with OER today and why they feel now is the time for OER to take off. \n  \nDal Badesha\, Head of Learning Resources and Student Engagement\, Coventry University. Dal oversees the learning resources and student engagement team at Coventry University. She plays a crucial role in making sure students can find and use learning resources\, including OER. \nWilliam Walters\, Executive Library Director\, Manhattan University. SUMMARY:Educación basada en IA Generativa: la IAG como Recurso Educativo Abierto

SUMMARY:Practicing Democratic Education with a Course-Based Custom GPT and Dialogic Prompts
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on interactive workshop presented by Dr Olga Shugurova explores the innovative use of AI such as custom GPT models and dialogical prompts (Matusov\, ChatGPT4\, Smith & Shugurova\,2023) to create democratic open educational resources (OERs). \nThe use of conversational AI in education has shown promising results in enhancing learning outcomes (Chiu et al.\, 2023). A systematic review by Henry et al. (2021) highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary and critical approach to AI literacy. Labadze et al. (2023) reported that chatbot technology significantly improves learning achievement\, explicit reasoning\, and knowledge retention. \nDr Shugurova will demonstrate how educators can build their own course-based GPT that caters to diverse student goals\, interests\, needs and creates a psychologically safe learning environment. \n\nParticipants will learn how to:\nDesign and fine-tune custom GPT models for specific educational contexts\nCraft effective dialogical prompts that engage students and promote critical thinking without any technical skills\nIntegrate course content to create comprehensive\, interactive learning experiences that inspire learning\nAddress ethical considerations and potential biases in this GPT-powered educational pathway\n\nThe workshop will showcase the practical examples of custom GPT applications in various disciplines\, highlighting their potential to democratize education. It will also discuss strategies for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity when implementing these technologies. \nThrough hands-on activities and live demonstrations\, attendees will gain practical experience in developing their own course-based GPT. The session will conclude with a collaborative discussion on the future of AI in open education and its implications for democratic education. \nThis workshop is suitable for educational leaders\, educators\, instructional designers\, and educational technologists interested in exploring the intersection of AI and open education. Participants will leave with actionable insights and resources to begin implementing custom GPT in their own educational contexts.

SUMMARY:Integrating AI to Produce OER using OER Conversion Tool convOERter
DESCRIPTION:With the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies nowadays\, it is beneficial to use these technologies effectively to create Open Educational Resources (OER). This talk introduces the essentialness of using generative AI technology in the OER context\, particularly by applying a Text-to-Image model in the OER conversion tool “convOERter.” \n“convOERter” is a web-based tool that has been developed to convert existing educational materials containing images into ones with a Creative Common (CC) license. The development of the conversion tool greatly eases the process of creating OER content\, as it automatically captures the images in the original materials and allows educators to search for a replacement image that is CC-licensed in OER portals. However\, despite the substantial collection of high-quality images provided by these portals\, finding a replacement image that precisely aligns with the educator’s requirements remains challenging due to the static nature of any database. \nGenerative AI refers to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new content\, like text\, images\, music\, audio\, and videos based on human input. In the field of image generation\, various models are now available which offer a valuable opportunity for generating high-quality OER content. When educators cannot find suitable replacement images in Creative Commons portals\, employing a Text-to-Image AI model becomes essential for generating appropriate images. In this talk\, we will introduce the OER conversion tool and present the first steps towards integrating AI models within the tool.

SUMMARY:Education: The Future is Open – Lecture with Richard Baraniuk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Education: The Future is Open” – A Lecture by Richard Baraniuk\, founder of OpenStax \nA grassroots movement is sweeping through the academic world. The “OpenEd” movement is based on a set of intuitions that are shared by a remarkably wide range of academics: that knowledge should be free and open to use and re-use; that collaboration should be easier\, not harder; that people should receive credit and kudos for contributing to education and research; and that concepts and ideas are linked in unusual and surprising ways and not the simple linear forms that traditional media present. This is a pivotal moment for the OpenEd community to come together as education is reshaped by advances in AI\, evolving student needs\, and expanding global challenges. \nDr. Richard G. Baraniuk is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice University and founder and director of OpenStax. He launched Connexions in 1999 as a platform for open knowledge sharing\, which evolved into OpenStax\, the world’s largest OER publisher with more than 70 digital textbooks used by 7 million college and high school students this school year. He also leads SafeInsights\, the US National Science Foundation’s national infrastructure for education research. Baraniuk has been active in AI theory research and education applications for 15 years\, and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors\, AAAS\, and IEEE. He has received numerous research and education awards\, including the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal\, the James H. Mulligan\, Jr. Education Medal\, and the Harold W. McGraw\, Jr. Prize in Education.
