SUMMARY:Integrating AI to Produce OER using OER Conversion Tool convOERter
DESCRIPTION:With the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies nowadays\, it is beneficial to use these technologies effectively to create Open Educational Resources (OER). This talk introduces the essentialness of using generative AI technology in the OER context\, particularly by applying a Text-to-Image model in the OER conversion tool “convOERter.” \n“convOERter” is a web-based tool that has been developed to convert existing educational materials containing images into ones with a Creative Common (CC) license. The development of the conversion tool greatly eases the process of creating OER content\, as it automatically captures the images in the original materials and allows educators to search for a replacement image that is CC-licensed in OER portals. However\, despite the substantial collection of high-quality images provided by these portals\, finding a replacement image that precisely aligns with the educator’s requirements remains challenging due to the static nature of any database. \nGenerative AI refers to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new content\, like text\, images\, music\, audio\, and videos based on human input. In the field of image generation\, various models are now available which offer a valuable opportunity for generating high-quality OER content. When educators cannot find suitable replacement images in Creative Commons portals\, employing a Text-to-Image AI model becomes essential for generating appropriate images. In this talk\, we will introduce the OER conversion tool and present the first steps towards integrating AI models within the tool.

SUMMARY:Education: The Future is Open – Lecture with Richard Baraniuk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Education: The Future is Open” – A Lecture by Richard Baraniuk\, founder of OpenStax \nA grassroots movement is sweeping through the academic world. The “OpenEd” movement is based on a set of intuitions that are shared by a remarkably wide range of academics: that knowledge should be free and open to use and re-use; that collaboration should be easier\, not harder; that people should receive credit and kudos for contributing to education and research; and that concepts and ideas are linked in unusual and surprising ways and not the simple linear forms that traditional media present. This is a pivotal moment for the OpenEd community to come together as education is reshaped by advances in AI\, evolving student needs\, and expanding global challenges. \nDr. Richard G. Baraniuk is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice University and founder and director of OpenStax. He launched Connexions in 1999 as a platform for open knowledge sharing\, which evolved into OpenStax\, the world’s largest OER publisher with more than 70 digital textbooks used by 7 million college and high school students this school year. He also leads SafeInsights\, the US National Science Foundation’s national infrastructure for education research. Baraniuk has been active in AI theory research and education applications for 15 years\, and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors\, AAAS\, and IEEE. He has received numerous research and education awards\, including the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal\, the James H. Mulligan\, Jr. Education Medal\, and the Harold W. McGraw\, Jr. Prize in Education.

SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. SUMMARY:Keynote: Racing Towards a Wasted Future: Generative AI and the Resurgence of Nuclear Energy (Dr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia)
DESCRIPTION:As the potentials and promises of generative AI sweep into the field of Open Education\, educators and advocates have a holistic responsibility to think deeply and expansively about the known and still emerging environmental impacts of these technologies. Demand for energy by the hungry server farms that create so-called artificial intelligence is bringing damaging and dangerous energy practices back from the grave\, including the resurrection of previously shuttered coal and nuclear power plants. How can we as Open practitioners reconcile the long standing historical and contemporary violence of coal and nuclear power production with the desire to widely embrace and experiment with generative AI? This talk will review the most recent research on AI energy demands and the environmental impacts\, as well as provide a brief history and contextualization of the current issues with nuclear waste\, pollution\, and accidents in North America\, primarily in the United States and Canada. Attendees will be invited to reflect deeply on what we stand to lose and gain with the widespread adoption of generative AI in society\, and hopefully leave inspired to mindfully use generative AI\, with its current promise and future perils in mind. \n\n\nSpeaker bio: \nDr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia serves as Associate Professor and Open Education Librarian at the University of Idaho. His research interests span a wide range of topics\, notably community archives\, the history and current practices of BIPOC feminisms especially in libraries and information environments\, and environmental justice. Marco is also a co-creator of the Chicana por mi Raza Digital Memory Collective\, which collects imperiled histories of Chicana civil rights activism. \n\nDate: Wednesday\, May 14\, 2025 \nTime: 11:00am – 12:00pm \nTime Zone: Saskatchewan Time (CST)

SUMMARY:Uses and Abuses of AI Agents in Education (OneHE webinar)
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Anna Mills will explore how student and teacher uses of agentic AI browsers affect higher education. She will describe possible applications of agentic browsers for teaching assistance and ways to reduce these browsers’ privacy and security risks. \nThese days\, “AI agent” sometimes refers to a custom chatbot and sometimes to an agentic AI browser that will take actions on the user’s behalf\, like clicking and filling out forms autonomously. In this webinar\, Anna Mills\, English Instructor\, College of Marin\, USA\, will clarify how students might be using agentic AI browsers to automate homework completion and what can be done about that\, and will look at ways educators might consider using them to assist their teaching without jeopardizing student data. \nThis webinar is open to all interested educators.

SUMMARY:Shifting Power: University Openness and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the University of Regina for an Open Education Speaker Series online presentation with Dr. George Siemens\, University of South Australia/ University of Texas (Arlington) \nSession Description: Universities have become end-consumers of AI. Unlike previous technology innovations\, where higher education played an active role in technology developments and adoption\, learner and institutional use of AI has advanced with only minimal voice from the university system itself. While frontier labs\, such as Anthropic and OpenAI\, have focused on offering services for learners\, they’ve largely sidestepped the system\, leaving universities as spectators. This talk will highlight the urgent need for universities to collaborate around shared data\, technology\, and services to ensure that the mission of serving learners remains central in the adoption of AI in courses and classrooms. When universities collaborate and pursue open standards\, they have a sufficiently powerful voice to shape the products and services offered by big tech companies\, shifting power from closed systems to the network of education institutions. \n  \nPresenter bio: George Siemens researches how human and artificial cognition intersect in knowledge processes. He co-founded Matter and Space – a human development platform that responds to the systemic impact of AI on learning\, human development\, and wellness. He now serves as Chief AI Officer at SNHU. He is the founding Director and Professor of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at University of South Australia and developed the Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at University of Texas at Arlington. He has delivered keynote addresses in more than 40 countries on the influence of technology and media on education\, organizations\, and society. His work has been profiled in provincial\, national\, and international newspapers (including NY Times)\, radio\, and television. He has served as PI or Co-PI on grants funded by NSF\, SSHRC (Canada)\, OLT (Australia)\, Intel\, Boeing\, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the Soros Foundation. He has received numerous awards\, including honorary doctorates from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and Fraser Valley University for his pioneering work in learning\, technology\, and networks. He holds an honorary professorship with University of Edinburgh. Dr. Siemens is a founding President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (http://www.solaresearch.org/).  In 2008\, he pioneered massive open online courses (sometimes referred to as MOOCs). George is President of the Global Research Alliance for AI in Learning and Education (GRAILE – www.graile.ai).

SUMMARY:RIOS Institute Brew & Banter with Dr. Allison Lester
DESCRIPTION:Brew and Banter is RIOS’ monthly virtual series where community members come together for informal conversations about current topics in STEM education. Each session offers a chance for attendees to share updates\, spark new ideas\, and learn from one another in a relaxed\, welcoming space. \nToday’s guest is Dr. Allison Lester\, AI Literacy Professor at Arizona State University\, on  “Co-Creating with AI to Enhance Critical Thinking” \nAs generative AI reshapes higher education\, many instructors are responding with tighter rules and greater surveillance. This session offers a different entry point. Drawing on classroom-based inquiry and open pedagogical practices\, it explores how co-creating with AI can strengthen critical thinking when learning environments are built on trust\, shared norms\, and student authorship. Rather than focusing on rules or detection\, the session highlights co-creating AI policy with students as a meaningful learning activity. Participants will see how shared agreements about AI use can open space for ethical reflection\, student voice\, and deeper engagement. \nThrough classroom examples\, the session illustrates how students use AI to build tools and projects\, encounter ethical challenges\, and return to collective norms around verification\, responsibility\, and judgment. Designed for higher education faculty across disciplines\, this session offers practical strategies and a clear framework for integrating AI in ways that align with existing teaching values and support thoughtful\, student-centered learning.

SUMMARY:OEWeek Live! Beyond ChatGPT: GenAI in Action
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for our live streamed demos aimed at showing you first hand what Generative AI can do for educators that goes beyond the typical perception of the popular ChatGPT interaction\, and not just “prompt engineering”. \nWe have lined up three demos to perhaps make you say “Wow” but maybe also “Oh my ______”.  Watch the demos live streamed on YouTube and send your comments and questions directly through chat to the guests in studio. \nWe do not flip slides and show screenshots on OEWeek Live\, you will see screen shared live demos in action and than have an opportunity to contribute to a lively conversation. Our guests in the studio include: \nWatch What an Agentic Browser Can Do on a Student’s behalf\nAnna Mills English/Writing instructor and an early AI inquisitor\, will demonstrate something that may make your jaw drop. Beyond the chat interface we are used to are “agentic browsers” that can be set loose online to perform tasks for us. Anna has published several videos showing tools like Perplexity Comet\, ChatGPT Atlas\, and Google Gemini completing quizzes and replying to discussions in a Learning Management System\, all while logged in as a learner (without any direct involvement by the student). She argues for the platforms to provide better guardrails. \nAnna Mills teaches writing at College of Marin and previously taught at City College of San Francisco for 17 years. Her collection “AI Text Generators and Teaching Writing: Starting Points for Inquiry” is featured in the Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse; it includes a curated collection of articles\, a set of sample AI essays\, and a list of strategies for mitigating educational harms associated with large language models. She has also written an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook\, How Arguments Work: A Guide to Writing and Analyzing Texts in College\, which has been widely praised and used at over 45 colleges. As the English Discipline Lead for the Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges OER Initiative\, she leads professional development workshops on OER and collaborative annotation. Anna earned a master’s degree from Bennington College in Writing and Literature with a focus on nonfiction writing\, and her essays have appeared in journals such as The Writer’s Chronicle\, The Sun\, and Salmagundi. \nTwo Autonomous Agents Work Together to Generate OER\nYasin Dahi founder of Learnful will show us GenOER an experimental platform designed for educators to generate OER (including interactive H5P activities) that are fully designed and created by autonomous agents. The system deploys a powerful model of a pair two autonomous agents working together that simulate the principles of educational design — and Educator Agent and a Designer Agent. “GenOER is not just a tool — it’s a testbed for exploring one of the most pressing questions in open education today: what happens when the “author” of an open resource is an algorithm? I hope GenOER sparks discussion\, critique\, and collaboration across the OER community. This is an experiment\, but one that asks real questions about scale\, pedagogy\, licensing\, and the future of authorship.” \nYasin is the founder of Learnful\, an EdTech software company based in Waterloo\, Ontario\, Canada. He develops open-source solutions focused on open education and digital learning. His projects — including H5P Studio\, GenOER\, and Axiom — aim to democratize access to software tools for OER\, H5P\, and AI. \nAn OER Repository with an AI Assisted Form that Writes the Metadasta\nMuriel Peguret and Mirela Cherciov from the Camerise Project at York University’s Glendon Campus will be showing a new tool for using AI to generate metadata for OER that is submitted for Camerise K-12 Studio (a project being demonstrated in another OEWeek Event) \nMuriel Péguret received her PhD in FSL Applied Linguistics from Dalhousie University in 2009. She is an Associate Professor at York University in French Studies (Glendon College) and the Faculty of Education. She co-leads with Mirela Cherciov the Camerise K-12 Studio project (built by Learnful Labs Inc.)\, a repository of French as second language OER for K-12 teachers. \nMirela Cherciov is an Associate Researcher who is developing\, in collaboration with Muriel Péguret\, an OER platform for K-12 FSL teachers. She holds a PhD in French Studies from the University of Toronto. She conducted research on first-language attrition and bilingualism across the lifespan and has been teaching FSL and linguistics courses. \nWatch live here or return later to see the recording. \n\nImage Credits: Old TV – Time Tunnel – Cameron Highland flickr photo by liewcf shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA 2.0) license remixed with OEW OEWeek image by Mario Badilla licensed CC BY 4.0 and Bart Fish & Power Tools of AI / Behaviour Power / Licenced by CC-BY 4.0

SUMMARY:Be the change you want to see: Applications of Seamless learning. Research projects from the International Research Network for Innovative Sustainable and Seamless Education (IRN-ISSE)
DESCRIPTION:The International Research Network for Innovative Sustainable and Seamless Education (IRN-ISSE) is a global research partnership that began at mLearn 2018 at Concordia University in Chicago. The vision of IRN-ISSE is to build an international community of practice\, inviting researchers and specialists to collaborate for the greater good\, with a specific focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The mission of IRN-ISSE is to study\, support\, inform\, share\, and implement research globally to improve access to and quality of education worldwide. The goal is to stand together and learn with and from each other\, striving to remain at the forefront of innovative\, sustainable\, and seamless educational practice \nThe community has a global reach\, including Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, North America\, South America\, and India. The partnership is working on several initiatives\, such as: \n\nThe Seamless Learning Experience Design Model\, which identifies five themes relevant to designing a seamless learning experience: 1) seamless learning concepts\, 2) positive concepts\, 3) practical concepts\, 4) human concepts\, and 5) design concepts. Based on these five concepts\, a Seamless Learning Experience Design (SLED) framework was developed.\nResearch and ongoing work include the “Be the change to see the change” (this was the theme for interviews and larger podcasts) initiative\, and on-demand\, driven learning.\n\nWhat you can expect: \nDuring this webinar\, you will meet some of the partners in IRN-ISSE. You will hear about their research and ongoing initiatives. You will have the opportunity to discuss with the team and the audience the interesting changes in education\, including those brought about by the AI era. You will also learn how you can become involved in the IRN-ISSE partnership. \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nHelga Hambrock. SUMMARY:From Shared Curriculum to AI Co-Creation: A Hands-On Workshop with TAI
DESCRIPTION:At OEWeek 2025\, ScholarRX explored strategies for developing open education resources (OER) in health professions education\, grounded in the idea of a shared global curricular ecosystem. This year\, we take the next step. \nWhat happens when AI becomes a collaborative partner in building and localizing open curriculum? \nThis interactive workshop invites participants to move beyond discussion and into design. Using TAI (Teaching with Artificial Intelligence)\, ScholarRx’s AI teaching assistant\, attendees will experiment with AI-supported curriculum creation in real time. While ScholarRx’s roots are in health professions education\, this workshop is designed for educators and instructional designers across higher education. \nRather than positioning AI as a tool that does the writing for you\, we frame it as a partner to help educators: \n\nClarify learning objectives\nStructure modular learning experiences\nGenerate formative questions\nTransform existing materials (e.g.\, PowerPoints\, PDFs\, lecture transcripts)into structured learning experiences\nLocalize and adapt materials for different learners\nTranslate and expand open resources responsibly\n\nParticipants will work individually or in small groups to develop a draft open learning module relevant to their own context\, with TAI as a co-creator. Participants are encouraged to bring an existing slide deck\, document\, or transcript they’d like to reimagine. \nWorkshop Outcomes \n\nBy the end of this session\, participants will:\nDevelop a draft open learning module using AI-supported instructional design\nIdentify where AI meaningfully supports\nand where it should not replace — educator expertise\nUnderstand practical considerations around licensing and attribution in AI-assisted OER development\nGain hands-on experience using TAI in a structured instructional workflow\n\n
