SUMMARY:WikiAfrica Hour's Offline Wikis – Kiwix Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:How do we share free knowledge with people who have no stable internet? How do you identify the right offline solution\, if you cannot see it in action online first?\n \nMany steps must be taken before offline solutions can benefit the people they are designed for\, some of which are quite tricky.  \nIn this OEWeek25 special\, following the January edition of WikiAfrica Hour: Offline Wikis\, we invite Offline Wiki experts to demonstrate their offline solution. We hope this will make one of the many steps towards offline—the decision phase—easier by showing what you should expect from this platform before you spend hours setting up the hardware\, sourcing to the right offline platform\, downloading it\, and then adding it to your hardware.  \nIn the hot seat for this session is:\n✔️ Stephane Coillet-Matillon\, who will demonstrate Kiwix \n

SUMMARY:Beyond Mandates: Fostering a Culture of Open Access Book Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Attempts to incentivise open access for books have\, to date\, largely centred around policy interventions that mandate publication in open formats and venues. Today we have OA book policies from funders in the UK\, Netherlands\, Austria\, Norway\, Ireland\, and Portugal; and the Council of the EU has said that for publicly funded research\, open access should be “the norm” for monographs as well as articles. \nBut the big stick of mandates can be a blunt instrument and very often add a heavy compliance burden on scholars and HE institutions. A more effective and lasting avenue to OA for books might be to embed open research and publishing cultures within universities and more widely. But currently\, HEIs often incentivise closed access publishing (deliberately or passively) by cleaving to the status quo in terms of recognising career advancement and in terms of publishing venues and how those venues are supported. How might this paradigm be shifted towards openness? \nThis session will feature short presentations from expert scholars\, librarians and publishers\, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. We will address these central questions: how can we incentivise researchers to publish their books OA? How can institutions signal more strongly that publishing openly should be important\, and reward those who do so? How might a culture of open research be fostered within and beyond the book publishing process? \nChanging the way the sector approaches reward and recognition for scholars could be a big driver for change in open access book publishing – going beyond mandates to offer positive reasons to embrace openness. \nJoin us for this online event\, presented in partnership by Copim and the Knowledge Equity Network. Featuring contributions from guest speakers\, Lucy Barnes (Senior Editor and Outreach Coordinator\, Open Book Publishers)\, Gavin Beattie (Associate Director: Research & Impact\, Libraries & Collections\, King’s College London)\, Jill Claassen (Section Manager\, Scholarly Communication & Research\, University of Cape Town)\, Kevin Sanders (Open Access Engagement Lead\, Open Book Collective) and Chaired by Sally Dalton (Head of Library Research Services: Open Research\, University of Leeds).

SUMMARY:Imagine a gender equal world – help write women onto Wikipedia for IWD!
DESCRIPTION:“Women in Red” – a Wikipedia editathon celebrating the lives and contributions of all the inspiring women of Scotland (and around the world) missing from the world’s go-to site for information. \nWikipedia is the 8th most visited website in the world but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles. Only 20.02% of biographies on English Wikipedia\, the world’s go-to source of information\, are about women. Women are not a minority and we can #ChooseToChallenge the paucity of stories currently shared on the open web and #InspireInclusion. This event will focus on improving the representation of inspiring women online. \nParticipants will learn how to edit Wikipedia pages during a hybrid event (online webinar AND in person meetup in the University of Edinburgh Main Library on the 6th floor in the Digital Scholarship Centre) and will be supported over the afternoon to help create new pages for notable individuals who are not currently on Wikipedia (perhaps from BBC’s 100 Women 2025) and/or help improve already existing Wikipedia pages. \nNo prior knowledge required as training will be provided for those with no Wikipedia editing experience. \nYou’ll learn a new digital skill in a social & supportive setting and meet like-minded event participants all passionate about improving representation online to help close the gender gap for the benefit of millions of readers all around the world. \n\n1:00 pm – 1:15pm: Welcome and Tea/Coffee\n1:15pm – 2:15pm: Wikipedia training from Ewan McAndrew.\n2:15pm – 2:30pm: Tea and Coffee break\n2:30 pm – 4:30pm: Research and Editing with aim to publish by 4:30pm.\n4:30pm – 5:00pm: Publishing your edits\, recap and event close.\n\n  \nJoin us as we help make Wikipedia better! \nThen you can check how long it takes for it to appear in Google’s top ten results! \nHave a look at the event page to see if there are pages you would like to help edit/create and if you fancy learning more about Wikipedia ahead of time then you can view the Wiki Basics site. \n

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies in International Education
DESCRIPTION:“Bridging the gap between theory and practice is essential for advancing education. While theoretical frameworks provide foundational understanding\, their real-world application ensures relevance and impact. Educators and institutions are challenged to translate scholarly insights into actionable strategies that address challenges in open and distributed education. This dynamic exchange between research and practice fosters innovation\, improves teaching effectiveness\, and enhances learning outcomes. Extending scholarship to practice also enriches research\, as practical applications often reveal new areas of inquiry\, leading to a continuous cycle of knowledge generation and refinement.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Drs. Adnan Qayyum and Levina Yuen will outline key emerging online technologies and their potential to enable and transform education on a global scale. \nEmerging Technologies in International Education\nDr. Adnan Qayyum and Dr. Levina Yuen\nMarch 7\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/qayyum-yuen-2025 \nThis is the third and final session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning.

SUMMARY:WikiAfrica Hour's Offline Demos – MoodleBox and Kiwix – Offline OER
DESCRIPTION:How do we share free knowledge with people who have no stable internet? \nHow do you identify the right offline solution if you cannot see it in action first online? \nMany steps must be taken before offline solutions can benefit the people they are designed for\, some of which are quite tricky. In this OEWeek25 special\, following the January edition of WikiAfrica Hour: Offline Wikis ( https://bit.ly/WAH_Ep42_YT )\, we invite Offline Wiki experts to demonstrate their offline solution. We hope this will make one of the many steps towards offline—the decision phase—easier by showing what you should expect from this platform before you spend hours setting up the hardware\, sourcing to the right offline platform\, downloading it\, and then adding it to your hardware. \nIn the hot seat for this session is: \n✔️ Dan McGuire and Shadrach Ankrah\, members of Sopal\, who are going to discuss the combination of offline solutions MoodleBox and Kiwix \nJoin this #OEWeek conversation on Offline!
