SUMMARY:Beyond Cost Savings: How Open Educational Resources Support Student Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Description\nTextbooks can be expensive\, stressful\, and sometimes out of reach\, and that pressure often shows up in students’ well-being and learning. \nIn this session\, we’ll talk about how Open Educational Resources (OER) can ease some of that stress by giving students free\, day-one access to course materials and more flexible\, inclusive ways to learn.\nTogether\, faculty and students will explore research\, real examples\, and small design choices that can make learning feel more supportive\, human\, and equitable. You’ll leave with practical ideas you can use right away.\nLearning Outcomes\n\nDescribe how Open Educational Resources (OER) can reduce student stress and support mental well-being by giving examples from research and practice.\nIdentify strategies for using OER to create more equitable\, flexible\, and inclusive learning experiences in their own courses or studies.\nReflect on the impact of course materials on mental health and propose at least one actionable change they could make to support student well-being through OER.\n\nWho should participate?\nFaculty\, students\, instructional designers\, librarians\, and educational developers who are interested in how open educational resources can reduce student stress and create more inclusive learning experiences.\nGoogle Meet Information\nVideo call link: https://meet.google.com/ddu-wnki-ucm \nOr dial: (CA) +1 587-797-8162‬ PIN: ‪854 299 637‬# \nMore phone numbers: https://tel.meet/ddu-wnki-ucm?pin=9011646883513

SUMMARY:Keynote – Open Hearts: Empowering Educators with Open Resources and Practices
DESCRIPTION:For Open Education Week San Diego Community College District brings you this keynote talk by Brenna Clarke Gray\, Assistant Professor\, Learning Design and Innovation and Coordinator\, Educational Technologies at Thompson Rivers University. \nSession Description\nI don’t know about you\, but in this particular moment — politically\, economically\, culturally — I’ve never felt more sharply the distinction between my values as an educator and the realities of the world outside my classroom. To celebrate Open Education Week\, then\, let’s all take a moment to find hope in the possibilities and promises of open education. In this session\, through a little bit of theoretical framing and a lot of practical examples\, we’ll discuss how open resources and open practices can empower us as educators to build a more equitable\, accessible\, and engaging learning experience for our students and for those far beyond our classroom walls. Join me as we open our hearts and share the possibilities of open education in a moment when we all really need to remember how far our good work can spread. \nSpeaker Details\nBrenna Clarke Gray is an open educator and critical technologist powered by righteous indignation and lattes and based at Thompson Rivers University in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc\, where she co-founded the TRU Open Press. Her work explores the possibilities of a care-centred approach to the ethical and equitable use of educational technologies. Her most recent work includes the peer-reviewed scholarly teaching and learning podcast Community of Praxis and the forthcoming Routledge Introduction to Canadian Comics. She holds a PhD from the University of New Brunswick\, where she was a Canada Graduate Scholar. Outside of the university’s walls\, she is an avid reader\, compulsive baker\, and tired mum. If she was a creature in the Jim Henson cinematic universe\, she would be Cotterpin Doozer.

SUMMARY:Engaging Students: Surveys\, Bookmarks\, and Tools for Open Educational Resources (OER) Momentum at Your College
DESCRIPTION:Students experience textbook costs as a barrier to access every day—yet many don’t know that zero textbook cost and OER options even exist. \nThis webinar equips OER advocates with simple\, ready-to-use tools to change that. Participants will learn how to engage students using a shared\, Institutional Review Board approved student-facing survey that can be deployed immediately with built in blurbs\, and customizable bookmark templates designed to raise awareness\, spark curiosity\, and invite participation. The session shows how to engage students to build OER momentum across campus. With no complex research setup and no added workload\, this session focuses on plug-and-play tools that help students feel seen while grounding OER efforts in authentic\, campus-relevant student voice. \nRegister for Surveys\, Bookmarks\, and Tools for OER Momentum at Your College

Join us for a conversation with Skyline College faculty who teach with OER and ZTC materials. Panelists will share their motivations for choosing affordable course materials\, the challenges and surprises they encounter\, and the impact on learning experiences in their courses. This session is an opportunity to learn from one another about how open and zero-cost materials can support both pedagogical creativity and student access. All are welcome—whether you’re curious\, cautious\, or already on the journey.
