SUMMARY:Free Books: Open Publishing at Concordia
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Open Education Month\, Concordia Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting open publishing at the Library and Concordia University Press (CUP). Together\, the Library and CUP collaborate to make scholarship and education free and accessible within and beyond the university. \nOpen Educational Resources (OER) are digital resources for teaching\, learning\, and research that are made available for use and re-purposing. They increase the variety of instructional resources in students’ learning experiences while lowering the financial barriers. OER in the form of open textbooks are a hallmark of Concordia’s OER program. Although open-access publications from university presses often do not permit repurposing in the same way that open textbooks do\, they are nonetheless free for students and can be adopted in courses. In parallel with open publishing\, Course Reserves also offer a free option for students. \nThis collaborative display illustrates how open education and open scholarship can nurture each other. As higher education becomes increasingly costly\, students stand to gain from the cost-saving benefits of viable alternatives to commercial textbooks. Meanwhile\, professors can choose to deepen their research and pedagogical impact by developing open-access and knowledge-mobilization plans to benefit students and the wider public. \nOrganized in six sections\, this display introduces students and faculty to the parallels between CUP and the Library’s OER program. In the vitrine and the digital counter\, you will find awareness efforts alongside physical and digital books from CUP and Concordia’s OER program. QR codes make these titles easily accessible\, while OER and CUP buttons and slogans promote the importance of open publishing. \nFinally\, the horizons of free course material options can be expanded through student advocacy and faculty pedagogy. We encourage students to nominate a course for open education and show their support for open publishing by wearing one of our buttons found at the Ask-Us Desk. We encourage faculty to consider open textbook grants\, course reserves\, and open-access university presses. \nLet’s reduce barriers to higher education together! \nCurated by the Library’s OER Team and Concordia University Press\, the exhibition will be on display from March 3 until April 30\, 2025. Special thanks to Zo Kopyna\, Chhayhee Sok\, Saelan Twerdy\, Meredith Carruthers and Rachel Harris. \nConcordia University Library supports open scholarship\, education\, and science. As part of this commitment\, the Library leads the University’s OER Program and continues to develop open scholarship initiatives and services\, such as our open guides and institutional repository. \nConcordia University Press is a non-profit publisher of peer-reviewed books. Concordia University Press is committed to barrier-free scholarship and our titles are available as free\, open-access e-books\, as well as for sale in thoughtfully designed print editions.

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to the tenth event in our ENOEL Workshop series\, organised by SPARC Europe and the European Network of Open Education Librarians (ENOEL): “WS#10 Embrace the Open: Advocating for Open Education through its own tools”. \nOur workshop facilitators are: \n\nSylvia Moes (SURF\, Netherlands)\nLambert Heller (TIB- Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology\, Germany)\n\nOur workshop guests\, open to sharing their experience as OE teachers\, are: \n\nKatja Politt (Bielefeld University\, Germany)\nPaul Gobee (University of Leiden\, Netherlands)\n\nPaul Gobee will take us on his journey of creating an open content platform for anatomy education and its connection to the national platform edusources. Paul has been working for 10 years on the creation of OER\, and was successful in finding funding for the development of this platform and\, with this initiative\, sharing insights specifically for librarians on how they can support open educational resources. \nKatja Politt has been creating OER to teach German linguistics in higher education for eight years. She especially likes to develop games\, from smaller crossword puzzles up to fully gamified courses on syntactic analysis\, in order to make seemingly boring topics more fun. When developing the materials\, she always involves both students and colleagues for feedback. Many of her students are aspiring teachers\, and publishing her materials as OERs allows her students to bring the fun to their classrooms easily\, too. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nAn in-depth look at how an open content platform was conceived and built\nThe challenges educators face in adopting and utilising open content resources\nThe ongoing struggle against commercial publishers and their influence on educational materials\nThe challenges for educators when creating OER and receiving community feedback\nOER as a stepstone to improving the quality of teaching\nStrategies for librarians to ensure quality\, accessibility\, and sustainability in OER while curating and promoting OER.\n\nThe chat will be open for the audience to ask questions and engage in the discussion directly with our experts. \nAt the end of this workshop\, you will be able to: \n\nunderstand the importance of grouping OER\, in different formats and for different potential reusers\, into subject-specific collections\, to support the work of experts and ease the retrieval process.\nIdentify strategies to effectively disseminate resources that can be key to advancing the work of content experts at your local level while giving them the opportunity to be known and recognised.\nBetter understand the role of individual educators and communities of practice in developing and distributing OER.\nGenerate ideas of small steps to take towards opening up your own teaching materials\nCollaborate with content experts and librarians to find\, reuse\, adapt resources for a specific knowledge domain.\nDiscuss the role of librarians as reliable partners in making quality resources visible and reusable by partnering with content experts.\n\nPlease join us. Register using this link: https://tinyurl.com/ENOELWorkshop10 \nThe previous webinar recordings are available in the ENOEL Workshops playlist on our  @ENOELforOpen Youtube Channel. Slides\, workshop plans and other resources are openly available in the SPARC Europe Collection on Zenodo. \nWe hope you can make it\, and we encourage you to share this with your colleagues!

SUMMARY:The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other – Aggie Open Invited Speaker\, Jessie Loyer
DESCRIPTION:The UC Davis Library’s AggieOpen Invited Speaker Series addresses important issues in Open Education and allows speakers to share their research with a broader audience. Our 2025 Invited Speaker\,  Indigenous Engagement Librarian Jessie Loyer\, will explore the history of Open Access and draw upon histories of caretaking in her talk\, “The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other.” \n“In this time of rising fascism\, white supremacy\, and dehumanization\, practitioners of open pedagogies can ask ourselves: what agreements have shaped the caring impulse behind our work? How do agreements such as treaty-making between Indigenous nations and nation-states inscribe intergenerational caretaking? How can we learn from our predecessors’ choices to build connections that allow us to survive and thrive?” \nJoin us during this year’s Open Education Week as Jessie considers these questions alongside participants through her scholarship on Indigenous relationality in digital spaces\, Open Education\, and digital kinship.  \nAbout the Speaker: Jessie is Cree-Métis and a member of Michel First Nation. She is the Indigenous Engagement Librarian at the University of Alberta in Calgary and a guest on Treaty 7 and Blackfoot territory. Her research examines Indigenous perspectives on information literacy\, supports language revitalization\, and creates ongoing research relationships using the nêhiyaw minâ otipêmisiw concept of kinship.
