SUMMARY:Free Books: Open Publishing at Concordia
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Open Education Month\, Concordia Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting open publishing at the Library and Concordia University Press (CUP). Together\, the Library and CUP collaborate to make scholarship and education free and accessible within and beyond the university. \nOpen Educational Resources (OER) are digital resources for teaching\, learning\, and research that are made available for use and re-purposing. They increase the variety of instructional resources in students’ learning experiences while lowering the financial barriers. OER in the form of open textbooks are a hallmark of Concordia’s OER program. Although open-access publications from university presses often do not permit repurposing in the same way that open textbooks do\, they are nonetheless free for students and can be adopted in courses. In parallel with open publishing\, Course Reserves also offer a free option for students. \nThis collaborative display illustrates how open education and open scholarship can nurture each other. As higher education becomes increasingly costly\, students stand to gain from the cost-saving benefits of viable alternatives to commercial textbooks. Meanwhile\, professors can choose to deepen their research and pedagogical impact by developing open-access and knowledge-mobilization plans to benefit students and the wider public. \nOrganized in six sections\, this display introduces students and faculty to the parallels between CUP and the Library’s OER program. In the vitrine and the digital counter\, you will find awareness efforts alongside physical and digital books from CUP and Concordia’s OER program. QR codes make these titles easily accessible\, while OER and CUP buttons and slogans promote the importance of open publishing. \nFinally\, the horizons of free course material options can be expanded through student advocacy and faculty pedagogy. We encourage students to nominate a course for open education and show their support for open publishing by wearing one of our buttons found at the Ask-Us Desk. We encourage faculty to consider open textbook grants\, course reserves\, and open-access university presses. \nLet’s reduce barriers to higher education together! \nCurated by the Library’s OER Team and Concordia University Press\, the exhibition will be on display from March 3 until April 30\, 2025. Special thanks to Zo Kopyna\, Chhayhee Sok\, Saelan Twerdy\, Meredith Carruthers and Rachel Harris. \nConcordia University Library supports open scholarship\, education\, and science. As part of this commitment\, the Library leads the University’s OER Program and continues to develop open scholarship initiatives and services\, such as our open guides and institutional repository. \nConcordia University Press is a non-profit publisher of peer-reviewed books. Concordia University Press is committed to barrier-free scholarship and our titles are available as free\, open-access e-books\, as well as for sale in thoughtfully designed print editions.

SUMMARY:Copim Conference 2026! Exploring the future of community-led open access books
DESCRIPTION:This free\, two-day hybrid conference will bring together the people and projects shaping the future of equitable\, community-driven open access book publishing. Timed to coincide with the conclusion of the Copim Open Book Futures project in April 2026\, this gathering will look forward and debate: what’s next for community-led open access books? \n‘Community-led’ publishing can be difficult to define\, and even more difficult to implement. How to identify our communities (which are usually overlapping)\, make meaningful and practical connections with them\, and develop open book publishing infrastructures that are used\, governed\, and sustained by our communities has been an ongoing challenge that the two Copim projects have grappled with both theoretically and practically over the last six and a half years. During this time\, we have also engaged with established and brand-new networks that are trying to achieve similar things in different countries around the world. \nAt this conference we will be asking essential questions and forging collaborative strategies about what comes next for open access book publishing. Our panels and workshops will tackle topics ranging from the likely outlook for collective funding mechanisms in a higher education landscape characterised by austerity and political vandalism; the role of librarians in advancing Diamond OA book publishing; how to make open access books accessible to everyone who might want to read them; the fragmentations and gaps in metadata that inhibit the discoverability of OA books and how to overcome these; the preservation of PhD research in systems that are targets for hackers; how experimental book publishing will change in the coming years (and if it will change how we publish); and where the new scholar-led OA presses are coming from. We will also reflect on broader overarching questions throughout the event\, including how to sustain community activity amid political\, economic\, and institutional crises; how to identify shared goals and forge effective collaborations between groups\, networks\, and institutions that have different priorities and ways of working; and how to guard against the co-option and hollowing-out of community-based models\, language\, and organising strategies by commercial actors whose main priority is revenue generation. \nThrough lively panels and discussions\, we will tackle the most pressing themes for community-led open access books today\, with a focus on collective action. It’s an opportunity for people across the community-led open access ecosystem to chart the next phase of open access publishing\, together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe would love you to join us\, either in person (at Loughborough University | London) or online (via Zoom). Programme details are gradually being released so keep an eye on your inbox!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 26 February 2026 (10:00 – 17:15 GMT)\nFriday 27 February 2026 (09:00 – 16:15 GMT)\n\nRegister now!

SUMMARY:AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit
DESCRIPTION:The African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA)\, in collaboration with OER Africa\, is pleased to announce the 2026 AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit\, scheduled for 3–4 March 2026. The virtual summit will convene librarians\, educators\, researchers\, policymakers\, and other stakeholders to explore how Open Education can expand access\, improve equity\, and transform learning outcomes across Africa. \nTheme: Open Education\, Open Possibilities\nOpen Education is reshaping the global learning landscape by expanding access to open educational resources and practices. It creates new pathways for inclusive\, quality\, and equitable education. This is particularly important for Africa\, which has the world’s youngest population\, with over 60 percent under the age of 25 and a median age of 19. Many young people and adult learners still face significant barriers to education due to inadequate resources and persistent equity gaps. Open Education presents an opportunity to address these challenges and to support Africa’s transformation into a global knowledge and innovation powerhouse. \nAfLIA strongly believes that African libraries have critical roles to play in bridging digital and resource gaps. Library professionals possess expertise in technology\, copyright\, and licensing\, positioning them as key partners in advancing Open Education. The 2026 virtual summit seeks to bring together stakeholders to share research\, case studies\, emerging models\, and visionary ideas that demonstrate how Open Education can enable transformative\, inclusive\, and equitable education across the continent. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Open for Student Success Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University for our 4th annual Open Education Week Celebration\,\nwhere professionals and students unite with the common purpose to learn and share insights about open and affordable education. \nThe Open for Student Success Symposium is free\, online\, and open to all\nand will take place on March 4\, 2026 from 9:30am to 4:30pm ET. \nRegister now! \n\n\n\nOur distinguished keynote speaker this year will be Josh Bolick\, Head of the David Shulenburger Office Of Scholarly Communication & Copyright at the University of Kansas (KU). With Maria Bonn and Will Cross\, Josh co-edited Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge (ACRL\, 2023) and co-founded the Scholarly Communication Notebook (SCN). A former presenter for the Open Education Network and OER Research Fellow\, he advocates for open access\, authors’ rights\, open education\, and issues related and is interested in OER as a vehicle for expanding scholarly communication knowledge and expertise. \n\n\nFrom 2016-2022\, he led open education programs at KU and remains engaged in open education advocacy in a variety of ways. He is published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication\, the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship\, PeerJ\, and PLOS Biology\, as well as other venues. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s in library and information studies from Florida State University. In his free time he enjoys cycling\, horror\, and culinary adventures\, especially tacos and barbecue. \nIn his keynote speech\, “Open but Not Finished: What We’ve Won and the Work Ahead\,” Bolick will summarize the shift to open\, examine emerging and lingering challenges\, and consider how the Open Movement can continue progress toward a more open research and teaching culture: \nWhile advocating for openness can feel like a struggle (and it often is)\, we’ve also achieved a lot over the last 20+ years. Open access scholarship and open educational resources and practices are normalized to a large degree\, and that’s worth celebrating. Still\, there are significant challenges to further growth\, including in hiring\, annual review\, promotion and tenure\, and other evaluation practices and the reward structures that shape and inform them. In this talk\, I will summarize the shift to open and what we’ve won\, examine emergent and lingering challenges\, and consider what we can do to continue pushing for more open research and teaching cultures\, with a focus on collaboration and support. \nIn addition to the keynote speech\, the symposium will feature presentations by 22 professionals from nine U.S. states\, as well as from Canada and Mexico. A full list of sessions can be found at https://research.library.gsu.edu/open. \nRegister now for free at https://forms.office.com/r/aZFktr12z3.

SUMMARY:The Price is Wrong: Free or Low-Cost Alternatives in Higher Education (Concordia University)
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, the cost of academic publishing can feel very wrong. Costs might feel wrong for students facing higher living and tuition costs\, and for researchers seeking to make their work open access. \nTextbooks\, course packs\, journal articles\, academic books\, and related online resources carry various price tags; some of which are shockingly high or low. Uncover the publishing costs in academia and learn about for-profit publishing alternatives. Participants who guess the accurate price will win prizes as we reveal how pathways within open scholarship and open education can lessen the financial burdens on students\, educators\, and researchers. \nIn twelve spins\, our version of Price is Wrong features useful information\, several slices of humour\, and prizes for our winners. In this collaboration\, Rachel Harris and Zo Kopyna from the Concordia University Library’s Open Educational Resources Team\, Ryan Van Huijstee from Concordia University Press\, and Douglas Moffat from 4TH Space act as game-show hosts\, radio announcers\, and design magicians. Together\, we encourage students\, professors\, librarians\, and staff members to join us… as volunteer game-show contestants and audience members\, take your seats! \n… \nHow can you participate? Join us in person  [4TH SPACE in the J.W. McConnell Building] or online by registering for the Zoom Meeting or watching live on YouTube. \n  \n> Learn more  \n> Part of open education month at Concordia University
