SUMMARY:Open Pedagogical Practices: Using Wikipedia in the Classroom with guest presenter Sarah Severson
DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia in the classroom is often seen as something to avoid or “consumed at your peril.” In this presentation\, Sarah will discuss how we can reshape this perspective to demonstrate that Wikipedia is an open educational resource that can be utilized alongside open pedagogical practices. Instead of viewing Wikipedia as something we passively consume as readers\, she will emphasize how it can serve as a valuable resource for teaching media literacy\, critical thinking\, writing\, and research skills. This hybrid presentation will include examples of Wikipedia-based assignments\, case studies\, and available resources. \nSarah Severson (she/her) is a librarian at the University of Alberta Library\, residing in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton) on Treaty 6 and Métis territory. She has been a casual Wikipedia editor for over ten years and has participated in many edit-a-thons and training sessions. In 2020\, she supervised the Wikipedian-in-Residence at the University of Alberta and has served on the board of directors of Wikimedia Canada since 2019. This year\, she joined the Art + Feminism campaign as a Regional Ambassador. Sarah views Wikipedia as an important alternative publishing model within our media landscape and believes it’s vital to engage with it critically as a librarian.

SUMMARY:Retrospective on Open Access Publishing
DESCRIPTION:“Open access (OA) ensures that scholarly research is freely accessible to all\, breaking down barriers to information due to subscription costs or institutional access limitations. This democratization of knowledge fosters equity\, enabling researchers\, educators\, policymakers\, and the public worldwide to engage with research findings without financial hindrance. Open access distribution facilitates collaboration\, innovation\, and the adaptation of research for and from diverse contexts—empowering institutions and individuals to improve practices and outcomes. SUMMARY:OEP Around the World
DESCRIPTION:OEP (Open Education Practices) and OER (Open Educational Resources)  both are important pillars of the OE Movement. While OER is well defined and is widely used on a daily basis\, OEP may have a broader understanding throughout different stakeholders within the educational sector. \nSince its launch in 2022 the German OER Strategy has contributed to a rise in awareness for OEP within various German communities field of OER. But still there is a huge variety in understanding\, interpreting and implementing OEP (at least in Germany). \nThus\, there are several initiatives trying to establish a better understanding of OEP in Germany. As a major German project management Agency\, we aim to support these initiatives. Therefore\, we will offer a session in which we want to gather different understandings of OEP throughout the world of Open Education. \nIf you work with OEP in any way we invite you to share and discuss with us your definition and/or understanding of OEP.

SUMMARY:Open for Antiracism: Leveraging Open Education to Support Antiracism in the Classroom\, 4 years in review
DESCRIPTION:In this 45-minute panel discussion\, we address the question: “How can the open education field engage effectively with antiracist pedagogy?” The Open for Antiracism Program (OFAR) provides an example from its four years of programming that supports. California community college faculty to transform their classrooms to be antiracist through the affordances of OER and open pedagogy. Now in its fifth year\, OFAR has supported almost 200 instructors from over 40 institutions to learn to adapt and author OER\, integrating antiracist activities and perspectives and co-creating materials with their students. \n Two propositions inform the design of OFAR: \n\nAcademics wish to change their classroom practices to be antiracist and need guidance on promising practices and a safe place to explore with peers;\nOER and open pedagogy can be effective tools to transform classrooms to be antiracist.\n\nProgram participants learn about antiracist pedagogy\, OER\, and open pedagogy. Participants then implement a change to their teaching by integrating OER or open pedagogy to make their class antiracist. Participants receive ongoing support through webinars\, coaching\, and OER support.  \nIn this session\, attendees will learn about program design and research on faculty perceptions and student outcomes. In addition\, attendees will hear from one of the program’s course facilitators about the successes and challenges of leading faculty in a discovery of the intersections between open education and antiracist pedagogy. The audience will be invited to share how they can apply this work in their own context to improve student success for marginalized and underserved students. \nPanelists:\n\nLaura Dunn\, Program Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Teaching\, Learning\, and Assessment\, Santa Clara University\nJames Glapa-Grossklag\, Co-Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Dean\, Educational Technology\, Learning Resources and Distance Learning\, College of the Canyons\nJoy Shoemate\, Course Developer and Facilitator\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Online Education\, College of the Canyons\n\nRegistration is required
