DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Regina for this special Open Education Week presentation\, “Open Education Solutions for Complex Times” with Anne-Marie Scott\, Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, BC. \nAbstract: Post-secondary institutions across Canada are facing a complex and uncertain future as they rapidly adjust to economic scarcity\, and it is clear that business-as-usual operating models will not support us to meet the challenges ahead. Compounding this is a tendency towards historical amnesia and constant reinvention; often the answers we need are already out there waiting to be discovered. The Commonwealth of Learning has a long history of working in contexts where complexity and uncertainty are the norm and has successfully used open education as an effective innovation toolkit. Drawing on examples\, this talk will outline the ways in which various elements of the open education ecosystem could be used to meet some of these big challenges in Canada head-on\, and (I hope) provide some inspiration to keep us moving forward. \nPresenter bio: Anne-Marie Scott is the Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, Canada where she supports COL’s mission and work in open learning for sustainable development across fifty-six countries. She is an internationally recognized expert in digital\, online\, and open education\, with leadership experience across higher education and the non-profit sector. She previously served as Deputy Provost of Athabasca University in Canada\, and before that spent nearly two decades at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. She serves on the Board of the Open Source Initiative and continues to teach in the Masters in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University in Canada.

DESCRIPTION:This webinar explores how communities of practice and mediation—and the tools they use to stay informed and build capacity in their profession—can become the driving force behind open professional learning in FSL and French-language education in minority contexts. Building on the Communautés Camerise model\, a Canadian project co-led by York\, Ottawa\, Laurier\, 10 school boards and partner organizations\, as an interinstitutional space for innovation and training\, we will highlight how formal and informal exchanges\, resource sharing\, and cross-sector collaboration (school boards\, postsecondary institutions\, and associations) can reduce professional isolation and transform “good ideas and/or practices” into adaptable\, transferable open educational resources (OER) for professional learning that can move across contexts. \nParticipants will examine how mediation across communities (bridging roles\, shared protocols\, and feedback loops) enables a shift from informal sharing to sustained co-creation of OER : educators exchanging practice-based knowledge\, iterating on resources\, and producing ready-to-use materials designed to be reused\, revised\, remixed\, and redistributed—principles at the heart of open education. The session will showcase a concrete “ecosystem” that communities can build and maintain together: a hub to design\, test\, and share professional learning resources and practices; a collaboration incubator to strengthen supportive networks among institutions and individuals; and a living observatory to continuously document needs and support evidence-informed improvement. \nDuring this webinar\, participants will discover practical community tools that support the development of open-content prototypes: pedagogical scanning/curation\, collaborative work and exchange spaces\, shared templates\, and lightweight documentation of pathways (from one classroom/ecosystem to another) that preserves context so others can responsibly reuse and modify resources. We will also discuss how a continuous experimentation mindset—including supportive tools such as AI-assisted planning aligned with competency-based assessment such as CEFR/DELF and curriculum—can accelerate iteration while keeping professional judgment\, inclusion\, and accessibility at the center of instructional design practices for developing teaching units. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will leave with: (1) a community exchange map identifying key mediation points and the tools that enable collaboration\, (2) an open prototype (resource\, workflow\, or professional learning content concept) to refine with peers\, and (3) a practical plan to sustain OER creation through community governance\, shared accountability\, and ongoing peer-supported upskilling.

DESCRIPTION:The International Research Network for Innovative Sustainable and Seamless Education (IRN-ISSE) is a global research partnership that began at mLearn 2018 at Concordia University in Chicago. The vision of IRN-ISSE is to build an international community of practice\, inviting researchers and specialists to collaborate for the greater good\, with a specific focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The mission of IRN-ISSE is to study\, support\, inform\, share\, and implement research globally to improve access to and quality of education worldwide. The goal is to stand together and learn with and from each other\, striving to remain at the forefront of innovative\, sustainable\, and seamless educational practice \nThe community has a global reach\, including Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, North America\, South America\, and India. The partnership is working on several initiatives\, such as: \n\nThe Seamless Learning Experience Design Model\, which identifies five themes relevant to designing a seamless learning experience: 1) seamless learning concepts\, 2) positive concepts\, 3) practical concepts\, 4) human concepts\, and 5) design concepts. With Maria Bonn and Will Cross\, Josh co-edited Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge (ACRL\, 2023) and co-founded the Scholarly Communication Notebook (SCN). A former presenter for the Open Education Network and OER Research Fellow\, he advocates for open access\, authors’ rights\, open education\, and issues related and is interested in OER as a vehicle for expanding scholarly communication knowledge and expertise. \n\n\nFrom 2016-2022\, he led open education programs at KU and remains engaged in open education advocacy in a variety of ways. He is published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication\, the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship\, PeerJ\, and PLOS Biology\, as well as other venues. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s in library and information studies from Florida State University. In his free time he enjoys cycling\, horror\, and culinary adventures\, especially tacos and barbecue. \nIn his keynote speech\, “Open but Not Finished: What We’ve Won and the Work Ahead\,” Bolick will summarize the shift to open\, examine emerging and lingering challenges\, and consider how the Open Movement can continue progress toward a more open research and teaching culture: \nWhile advocating for openness can feel like a struggle (and it often is)\, we’ve also achieved a lot over the last 20+ years. Open access scholarship and open educational resources and practices are normalized to a large degree\, and that’s worth celebrating. SUMMARY:What Can I Share—and Where? Digital Literacy\, Open Licenses\, and Faculty Publishing Pathways
DESCRIPTION:Faculty create a wide range of digital materials—articles\, syllabi\, datasets\, lecture media\, public scholarship\, and creative work—but questions about copyright\, licensing\, and “where this work belongs” often create barriers to sharing.  \nThis Open Education Week workshop at DePauw University introduces digital literacy concepts through the lens of open licenses and publishing pathways. Participants will explore how Creative Commons licenses work\, how to decide what level of openness is appropriate for different kinds of work\, and where faculty can publish or share materials—from journals and institutional repositories to open platforms and community-aligned publishing models. Designed for a liberal arts context\, the session emphasizes faculty agency\, ethical knowledge sharing\, and practical decision-making that supports teaching\, scholarship\, and public impact.

SUMMARY:Teaching on the CUNY Academic Commons
DESCRIPTION:The CUNY Academic Commons is a WordPress/BuddyPress network designed for and by faculty\, staff\, and students at the City University of New York (CUNY). The Commons is designed to support faculty initiatives and build community through the use(s) of technology in teaching and learning. The free exchange of knowledge among colleagues across the university is central to better educating the student body and expanding professional development opportunities for faculty research and teaching. \nSince its founding in 2009\, CUNY faculty have taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses on the CUNY Academic Commons. Faculty use course sites to host OER course materials\, foster student engagement with one another and wider publics\, and develop assignments that move beyond a standard final paper or reading response. SUMMARY:Open for Antiracism: Trauma informed approaches to open education
DESCRIPTION:Open for Antiracism is a special project of OE Global that has been providing professional development programming across California Community colleges on OER and Open Pedagogy for over 6 years.  \nIn this 2-part session\, you’ll first hear from our program directors\, Laura Dunn and James Glapa-Grossklag\, on how the antiracism and equity landscape has changed since the program’s beginnings in 2020\, the impact that OFAR has had on students and faculty\, and how OFAR is applied in the classroom.  \nIn the second half of our session\, OFAR coach\, past participant\, and professor of child development at Cerro Coso Community College\, Tyrone Ledford shares how he has adapted OFAR’s program in his trauma informed approach to teaching child development. Tyrone will be presenting how to blend anti-racist curriculum and trauma informed teaching strategies to create classroom environments that are empathetic and inclusive to students of diverse backgrounds who have experienced trauma. \n\nTyrone Ledford is an educator and equity advocate committed to student success and community empowerment. An award-winning Umoja Counselor and two-time Faculty of the Year at Cerro Coso Community College\, he created the Trauma-Informed Care specialization program to better support students impacted by trauma. Beyond the classroom\, Tyrone advances equity through his family-owned community garden\, where he provides students with access to fresh food\, education\, and hands-on experience growing their own food while promoting food security\, sustainability\, and self-sufficiency.\nLaura Dunn is the director of Open for Antiracism and faculty of religion at the University of Hawaii. Laura’s current research examines how indigenous knowledge systems intersect with cross cultural contemplative practices as a means to reclaim identity in post- and neo-colonial contexts. She is an award-winning writer and scholar\, Newhall Fellow\, Interreligious Collaborative Research Fellow\, and recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Association for Asian Studies Publication Grant. \nJames Glapa-Grossklag is Dean\, Educational Technology\, Learning Resources\, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons (USA). He serves as Technical Assistance Provider for the California Community Colleges’ Zero Textbook Cost Degree Program\, the largest-ever public investment in OER. He co-directs the Open for Antiracism Program\, is an OER Fellow for the Michelson 20MM Foundation\, and co-leads\, with Carnegie Mellon University\, a national training program to help faculty from broad-access institutions learn to teach with generative AI. James is past President of Open Education Global\, the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources\, and Directors of Educational Technology in California Higher Education. James served as a trainer on OER for the US Department of State in the Middle East and North Africa and was Innovation Scholar in Residence at RMIT University in Australia. He held the appointment of Global OER Ambassador for ICDE 2017-21.
