SUMMARY:OEP Around the World
DESCRIPTION:OEP (Open Education Practices) and OER (Open Educational Resources)  both are important pillars of the OE Movement. While OER is well defined and is widely used on a daily basis\, OEP may have a broader understanding throughout different stakeholders within the educational sector. \nSince its launch in 2022 the German OER Strategy has contributed to a rise in awareness for OEP within various German communities field of OER. But still there is a huge variety in understanding\, interpreting and implementing OEP (at least in Germany). \nThus\, there are several initiatives trying to establish a better understanding of OEP in Germany. As a major German project management Agency\, we aim to support these initiatives. Therefore\, we will offer a session in which we want to gather different understandings of OEP throughout the world of Open Education. \nIf you work with OEP in any way we invite you to share and discuss with us your definition and/or understanding of OEP.

California community college faculty to transform their classrooms to be antiracist through the affordances of OER and open pedagogy. Now in its fifth year\, OFAR has supported almost 200 instructors from over 40 institutions to learn to adapt and author OER\, integrating antiracist activities and perspectives and co-creating materials with their students. \n Two propositions inform the design of OFAR: \n\nAcademics wish to change their classroom practices to be antiracist and need guidance on promising practices and a safe place to explore with peers;\nOER and open pedagogy can be effective tools to transform classrooms to be antiracist.\n\nProgram participants learn about antiracist pedagogy\, OER\, and open pedagogy. Participants then implement a change to their teaching by integrating OER or open pedagogy to make their class antiracist. Participants receive ongoing support through webinars\, coaching\, and OER support.  \nIn this session\, attendees will learn about program design and research on faculty perceptions and student outcomes. In addition\, attendees will hear from one of the program’s course facilitators about the successes and challenges of leading faculty in a discovery of the intersections between open education and antiracist pedagogy. The audience will be invited to share how they can apply this work in their own context to improve student success for marginalized and underserved students. \nPanelists:\n\nLaura Dunn\, Program Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Teaching\, Learning\, and Assessment\, Santa Clara University\nJames Glapa-Grossklag\, Co-Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Dean\, Educational Technology\, Learning Resources and Distance Learning\, College of the Canyons\nJoy Shoemate\, Course Developer and Facilitator\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Online Education\, College of the Canyons\n\nRegistration is required

SUMMARY:How To Use Creative Commons Licenses
DESCRIPTION:“Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization that maintains a set of user- and creator-friendly copyright licenses that you can attach to your work to communicate how it can be used and distributed by others.” (quote from this quick start guide). \nIn this session Kate Langrell\, USask Copyright Coordinator\, will review the Creative Commons licenses and share how to attach one to your work. She will also touch on the relationship between Generative AI materials and Creative Commons licenses\, and what to do if you want to use part of someone else’s work within your own Creative Commons work.

SUMMARY:Curation as a Teaching Strategy
DESCRIPTION:We typically associate the word “curation” with art galleries and museums\, but with the burgeoning availability of open education resources\, it can also be part of a content creation strategy. \nSifting through the vast amounts of relevant content online can be challenging\, but also presents opportunities to selectively collect astonishing and high-quality pieces\, carefully authored by others and potentially of great value to your learners. Curating existing online materials can also offset resource-intensive media productions\, such as filming and creating videos that are normally included in content-focused designs. This presentation will focus on the process of finding\, evaluating\, selecting\, arranging\, annotating and contextualizing existing and quite often\, freely-available\, online learning materials in order to create a rich learning experience. \nWhether you plan to curate all of the content\, or also want to create some your own\, we will explore what mix is right for you\, and look at a few tools that can help make the process easier.

SUMMARY:The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other – Aggie Open Invited Speaker\, Jessie Loyer
DESCRIPTION:The UC Davis Library’s AggieOpen Invited Speaker Series addresses important issues in Open Education and allows speakers to share their research with a broader audience. Our 2025 Invited Speaker\,  Indigenous Engagement Librarian Jessie Loyer\, will explore the history of Open Access and draw upon histories of caretaking in her talk\, “The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other.” \n“In this time of rising fascism\, white supremacy\, and dehumanization\, practitioners of open pedagogies can ask ourselves: what agreements have shaped the caring impulse behind our work? How do agreements such as treaty-making between Indigenous nations and nation-states inscribe intergenerational caretaking? How can we learn from our predecessors’ choices to build connections that allow us to survive and thrive?” \nJoin us during this year’s Open Education Week as Jessie considers these questions alongside participants through her scholarship on Indigenous relationality in digital spaces\, Open Education\, and digital kinship.  \nAbout the Speaker: Jessie is Cree-Métis and a member of Michel First Nation. She is the Indigenous Engagement Librarian at the University of Alberta in Calgary and a guest on Treaty 7 and Blackfoot territory. Her research examines Indigenous perspectives on information literacy\, supports language revitalization\, and creates ongoing research relationships using the nêhiyaw minâ otipêmisiw concept of kinship.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Affordable and Accessible Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Canadian Coalition for Affordable Learning \nWith the recent decrease in international learners studying in Canada and with threats of trade wars and tariffs looming\, the Canadian Coalition for Affordable Learning is presenting an exclusive workshop about accessible and affordable learning in postsecondary education. \nOn March 4 at 2pm EST\, join Alexandra Marcaccio (Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries)\, Amanda Coolidge (BCcampus)\, Carley McDougall (Campus Manitoba)\, Clint Lalonde (BCcampus) and Robert Luke (eCampusOntario) to learn about the best practices in digital education\, open education\, and more. Together\, we’ll discuss how we can provide learners with better access to postsecondary education during a time of economic uncertainty. \nDuring times of economic recession people tend to go back to school\, especially for programs oriented around skills. With the recent reduction in international education and with threats of trade wars and tariffs looming\, a focus on accessible and affordable learning is even more important – to encourage more people to reskill and upskill\, and to access learning when and how they need it. Accessible and affordable learning is about supporting digital by design education at scale by fostering inclusion in digital environments and offering options for learning that engage multiple modalities – face to face\, hybrid\, and online. Supporting open education and the use of Open Educational Resources is common among our organizations. These provide important low-cost learning resources for students\, promoting access and engagement. \nThe workshop includes a panel discussion\, a showcase of successful initiatives across Canada\, and a facilitated group discussion. Discover how we can work together to create a more equitable and affordable educational landscape for students across Canada.

SUMMARY:Wikidata and Wikibase - Curriculum Transformation in the Digital Humanities (Hybrid Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of talks exploring Wikimedia in the curriculum\, Scottish history and historical data (accused witches and religious change in early modern Scotland) and opening up the collections of the National Library of Wales! \nWikibase is the underlying platform that powers Wikipedia’s sister project\, Wikidata\, and as an open source platform\, it allows users to create their own version of Wikidata with their own field names while still being able to connect to and leverage data from Wikidata. As such\, it offers more quality control and bespoke opportunities for collections and research dataset holders. \nData skills for all! \nAs part of our ongoing mission to support our open knowledge and data skills commitments\, this HYBRID seminar ( REMOTE participation available!) will build on prior learning and past seminars hosted by the Edinburgh Centre for Data\, Culture and Society (CDCS) in 2019. \nWe see this seminar as our next logical opportunity to support teaching and learning at the University at a time of curriculum transformation. The University has developed a framework for future skills in the curriculum to include data skills for all. This seminar will showcase a number of case studies of how Wikipedia and Wikidata have been included as curriculum elements in teaching and the impact that can have on students working on large and open data sets. \nJason Evans\, Open Data Manager at the National Library of Wales\, will expound on how the National Library has shared its collections as linked open data to Wikidata over the last eight years (including the opportunities and benefits of doing so) AND will also showcase their new SNARC Wikibase (Semantic Name Authority Repository Cymru) to ensure they can leverage the vast amount of complementary data in Wikidata through federated queries but also now have both a controlled vocabulary and access control for their authority records. \nDr. Chris Langley\, The Open University\, is a historian working with Wikibase to create a database of the General Assemblies of Scotland following his Wikidata work on the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project. \nSCHEDULE: \n\n3:00 pm – 3:10pm: Welcome from Ewan McAndrew\, Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh.\n3:10 pm – 3:25pm: ‘Wikidata in the Curriculum’ – Ewan McAndrew will preface our two guest speakers with a general introduction to student work with Wikidata assignments including the Map of Accused Witches in Scotland project and Tower Block Archive.\n3:25 pm – 3:35pm: ‘Mapping Religious Change in Early Modern Scotland’ – Dr. Chris Langley (The Open University) will introduce the ways in which Wikibase Cloud can be used to structure historical data. In particular\, the talk will explore how to use Wikibase and LeafletJS alongside textual sources relating to seventeenth-century Scotland.\n3.35 pm – 4.00pm: ‘Wikibase for Name Authority at the National Library of Wales‘ – Jason Evans (National Library of Wales) on the modest goal of creating a knowledge graph of all Welsh cultural heritage data. Learn how NLW’s Wikibase is helping them take their first steps. The talk will highlight the benefits of using Wikibase alongside Wikidata to build a linked network of entities across multiple collections.\n4:00pm – 4:10pm: ‘Wikimedia in Education: Booklet of Case Studies (v2.0)’ – Satu Kapiainen (Information Services\, University of Edinburgh) will showcase the new edition of our booklet of 21 case studies of how Wikimedia is being used as a form of learning technology in UK education.\n4:10 pm – 4:30pm: – Q&A with all the speakers.\n4:30pm – 5pm:- Tea and coffee and general mingling/discussion.\n5pm: Thanks and event close.\n\n  \nZoom link for remote attendance \nWikibase for Name Authority at the National Library of Wales (Jason Evans) \nWith the modest goal of creating a knowledge graph of all Welsh cultural heritage data\, learn how our Wikibase is helping us take our first steps. The talk will highlight the benefits of using Wikibase alongside Wikidata to build a linked network of entities across multiple collections. \nSpeaker bio \nJason Evans is the Open Data Manager and Wikimedian at the National Library of Wales. Working at the intersection of access policy\, data science and digital engagement Evans aims to make cultural heritage collections more accessible and discoverable through new policy and practice. \nMapping Religious Change in Early Modern Scotland (Dr. Chris Langley) \nThis talk will introduce the ways in which Wikibase Cloud can be used to structure historical data. In particular\, the talk will explore how to use Wikibase and LeafletJS alongside textual sources relating to seventeenth-century Scotland. \nSpeaker bio \nDr. Chris Langley is a historian of early modern religious culture\, especially in Scotland: he wants “to understand how people in the past experienced religion and how it fit into their lives”. Chris uses digital techniques\, including open linked data\, to understand religious change. His current research project explores the Scottish General Assemblies between 1638 and 1653. \nMap of Accused Witches of Scoland v2.0 – a student project 5 years in the making \nYear on year\, students on the Design Informatics MA/MFA programme derived meaningful learning experiences through engaging practically with data skills and Scottish accused witches to support course learning outcomes. Our open data Map of Accused Witches in Scotland project (2019) then helped surface data from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft\, as linked open data and provided five student interns with rich learning opportunities to geolocate all the historic placenames mentioned and put the individual human stories behind the data on the map for the first time\, allowing them to be explored as never before. For five years\, this resource has helped raise awareness of\, and discourse about\, the Scottish witch trials (1563-1736) at a national and international level and been utilised by school pupils\, teachers\, researchers\, authors\, historians\, journalists\, and members of the public all around the world; demonstrating the interest in\, and benefits of\, such work. \nEwan McAndrew\, Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh\, will provide a brief overview of the project’s creation and highlight the contributions of everyone involved. \nWho is this event for? \nHumanities students\, Informatics and Computer Science students\, the CDCS past attendees\, AI researchers\, Data researchers\, attendees from our 100 strong launch event for the Map of Accused Witches v2 launch\, Library and University Collections staff\, National Library of Scotland metadata staff\, Informatics staff etc. \nAnyone interested in the possibilities of staff and students sharing data to Wikidata and/or creating their own collection/research database in Wikibase. \nAn open data future? \nIf our Map of Accused Witches project could be considered Open Data ‘Project A’ then ‘Project B’ has been the Dr. Chris Langley’s work on Mapping the Scottish Reformation site which explores the Scottish clergy during the 16th and 18th century: where they were employed\, how they moved around\, where they were educated and more. \nBoth the Map of Accused Witches and Mapping the Scottish Reformation projects demonstrated the usefulness for students & researchers of taking the hitherto de facto print resources\, The Sourcebook of Witchcraft by Christina Larner and the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae\, The Succession of Ministers in the Church of Scotland from the Reformation\, for the exploring of the Scottish Witch Trials and the Scottish Reformation respectively and updating\, improving and augmenting these resources as digital tools using linked open data on a sustainable platform AND providing students with much needed opportunities for learning of digital and data skills – both through practical coursework and through internship opportunities. \nBoth of these projects showcased their initial ideas in CDCS seminars in 2019. And both have moved on in the last five years considerably\, especially given discussions on data quality\, maintaining the data\, controlling access to the data and the usefulness of high quality of data for LLMs/artificial intelligence. \nSo a final outcome would be to see Open Data ‘Project C’\, ‘Project D’\, ‘Project E’ etc. etc. to build on the learning from the Map of Accused Witches project and Mapping the Scottish Reformation and provide more opportunities for students to learn data skills through practical engagement with research and collections datasets… and with Scottish history.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning
DESCRIPTION:“The rise of online education has transformed teaching and learning paradigms. These changes are fueled by advancements in technology and the demand for flexible\, inclusive access to education—even in times of war and epidemic. Online educational practices emphasize interactivity\, learner autonomy and self-direction\, and accessibility\, while theoretical frameworks have expanded to address issues such as openness\, digital equity\, attrition\, engagement in virtual environments\, and the design of learning-centered curricula. This evolution has created opportunities and challenges as researchers explore digital tools and platforms to measure if they enhance learning effectiveness and address diverse learning needs.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Dr. Connie Anderson and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson will review the role and impact of open and distributed learning over the last twenty-five years and explore how it may continue to evolve into the future. \nThe Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning\nDr. Connie Blomgren and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson\nMarch 5\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/blomgren-anderson-2025 \nThis is the second session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of the open access journal\, The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning.
