SUMMARY:Tricky CC License Questions Call in Show (OEWeek Live)
DESCRIPTION:This is a special themed topic OEWeek Live for Open Education Week 2025 featuring a team of Creative Commons Experts\, facilitators of the Creative Commons Certificate program. \nYes choosing a license from the list is one thing\, but there are always complexities that arise in practice. We’ve asked our panel to come with a few “tricky” questions but we want to also give the audience a chance to pose theirs. As always\, we are not offering legal advice (we will here “IAmNotALawyer”) but a great opportunity to hear our guests describe their approach to answering CC questions. \nGuests confirmed so far include: \n\nShanna Hollich (Creative Commons)\nJonathan Poritz (Independent consultant\, and CC Certificate facilitator)\nJennifer Hughes (CC Certificate facilitator)\nJennifer Campbell (CC Certificate facilitator)\nSuzanne Wakim (CC Certificate facilitator)\n\nWatch live where we we invite tricky CC questions and comments from the audience sent through the chat. Or submit them ahead of time via the call-in web form https://forms.gle/MFK1b8Hm2bBGvc4B7 or watch the recording later: \n\nLearn More: \n\nOpen Education Week https://oeweek.oeglobal.org/\nCC Certificate Program\, https://certificates.creativecommons.org/ \nOE Week Live Schedule https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/oeweek-live-webcasts/7383\nCopyright First Responders Pacific Northwest https://copyrightfirstresponderspnw.org/\n\nFeatured Image: Composite image including Old TV – Time Tunnel – Cameron Highland flickr photo by liewcf shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA) license with Open Education 2025 Week banner by  Mario Badilla at OEGlobal and shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. SUMMARY:eCampusOntario Open Library Forum on Affordability
DESCRIPTION:Join the eCampusOntario Open Library team in an open discussion on Affordability\, Open Education\, and Low-cost designations in higher education. We’ll be presenting some findings on affordability initiatives across Ontario’s post-secondary sector and spotlighting efforts at various institutions across the province. Participants will be able to help co-design the future of affordability and sustainability\, with an eye towards finding common definitions and shared languages to ensure OER and other resources can support keeping post secondary education affordable for all learners.

SUMMARY:Vectors of Trust: Practicing Reciprocal Values in Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:In eduspaces we talk about values in nebulous terms. We believe in open\, we believe in barrier-free\, we believe in social justice\, we believe in student-focused pedagogies. But what are these values as praxis for those of us who support student-focused spaces? \nIn this keynote\, Dr. Ann Gagné will discuss how we are currently living through a crisis of trust in higher education\, institutionally\, governmentally\, societally\, and within our own communities. She will support reflection on how trust is a vector\, with both magnitude and direction that impacts the work we do and the work we want to do.  By highlighting broken reciprocal values and support systems\, this talk defines the moral injury seen in our eduspaces and gives participants the opportunity to leave with tangible next steps to promote trust as reciprocal and etymologically radical. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nDr. Ann Gagné (she/her) is Senior Educational Developer\, Accessibility & Inclusion at Brock University and a sessional instructor at George Brown College. She has worked in higher education in Ontario at colleges and universities for 21 years. Her work focuses on the need for accessible pedagogies through holistic awareness of disabled learners\, faculty\, and staff lived experience to decrease barriers to inclusion in higher education. She has facilitated workshops and keynotes on accessible pedagogy\, accessible event design\, accessible social media practices\, and trauma-aware UDL.  In March 2023 she started her own podcast Accessagogy\, which talks about accessibility and pedagogy in short (under 15 minute) episodes. \nBC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) is grateful for the support of BCcampus who has co-funded this event.

SUMMARY:Interactive Asynchronous Discussions with Discuss-It in LibreTexts’ ADAPT
DESCRIPTION:Ready to energize your asynchronous online discussions? In this session\, our panel of instructors will introduce Discuss-It\, a powerful extension of the LibreTexts’ ADAPT homework platform that fosters active learning\, student engagement\, and collaboration in online courses.  \nThis tool\, available for free in California\, supports asynchronous student-to-student interaction and instructor-student communication through multimedia options\, enhancing the learning experience for all students. Discuss-It also prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity\, offering features like auto-captioning\, and auto-transcription with editing capabilities in multiple languages\, powered by OpenAI’s Whisper technology. With its seamless integration with Canvas and other learning management systems for automatic gradebook syncing\, Discuss-It can be a powerful teaching tool and streamline course management for instructors.  \nDiscuss-It allows students to engage in threaded discussions using text\, audio\, and video responses\, creating a more interactive and engaging online learning environment. By promoting creativity and enabling students to express their thoughts in diverse ways\, it encourages meaningful conversations with their peers. Peer review and feedback are also integral to Discuss-It\, promoting reflection and increasing accountability among students.  \nJoin us to discover how Discuss-It can transform online learning by creating an engaging\, inclusive\, and collaborative learning environment.

SUMMARY:Imagine a gender equal world – help write women onto Wikipedia for IWD!
DESCRIPTION:“Women in Red” – a Wikipedia editathon celebrating the lives and contributions of all the inspiring women of Scotland (and around the world) missing from the world’s go-to site for information. \nWikipedia is the 8th most visited website in the world but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles. Only 20.02% of biographies on English Wikipedia\, the world’s go-to source of information\, are about women. Women are not a minority and we can #ChooseToChallenge the paucity of stories currently shared on the open web and #InspireInclusion. This event will focus on improving the representation of inspiring women online. \nParticipants will learn how to edit Wikipedia pages during a hybrid event (online webinar AND in person meetup in the University of Edinburgh Main Library on the 6th floor in the Digital Scholarship Centre) and will be supported over the afternoon to help create new pages for notable individuals who are not currently on Wikipedia (perhaps from BBC’s 100 Women 2025) and/or help improve already existing Wikipedia pages. \nNo prior knowledge required as training will be provided for those with no Wikipedia editing experience. \nYou’ll learn a new digital skill in a social & supportive setting and meet like-minded event participants all passionate about improving representation online to help close the gender gap for the benefit of millions of readers all around the world. \n\n1:00 pm – 1:15pm: Welcome and Tea/Coffee\n1:15pm – 2:15pm: Wikipedia training from Ewan McAndrew.\n2:15pm – 2:30pm: Tea and Coffee break\n2:30 pm – 4:30pm: Research and Editing with aim to publish by 4:30pm.\n4:30pm – 5:00pm: Publishing your edits\, recap and event close.\n\n  \nJoin us as we help make Wikipedia better! \nThen you can check how long it takes for it to appear in Google’s top ten results! \nHave a look at the event page to see if there are pages you would like to help edit/create and if you fancy learning more about Wikipedia ahead of time then you can view the Wiki Basics site. \n

SUMMARY:The Provocations of Indigenous Cultures within a Conference: Using Métissage to Explore the In/Compatibility of Indigenous Ways of Knowing with Open Education
DESCRIPTION:At OE Global 2023 Indigenous ways of knowing and being were a fundamental component of the conference design and organization. Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizers established a collaborative governance approach to foster partnership and mutual guidance throughout the planning and execution stages. \nIn this session\, Dawn Witherspoon\, Darrion Letendre\, and Robert Lawson will perform métissage to recount the design and implementation of\, and personal experiences with\, a conference program that reflected the concept of two-eyed seeing\, navigating Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews. We will explore the incompatibility and compatibility of Indigenous ways of knowing with the ontological and epistemological assumptions embedded into open education. A fundamental question we examine is how the braiding of conference stories can unearth the interplay of Indigenous (nêhiyawîhcikêwin Plains Cree) ways of knowing with the values and practices of open education.

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies in International Education
DESCRIPTION:“Bridging the gap between theory and practice is essential for advancing education. While theoretical frameworks provide foundational understanding\, their real-world application ensures relevance and impact. Educators and institutions are challenged to translate scholarly insights into actionable strategies that address challenges in open and distributed education. This dynamic exchange between research and practice fosters innovation\, improves teaching effectiveness\, and enhances learning outcomes. Extending scholarship to practice also enriches research\, as practical applications often reveal new areas of inquiry\, leading to a continuous cycle of knowledge generation and refinement.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Drs. Adnan Qayyum and Levina Yuen will outline key emerging online technologies and their potential to enable and transform education on a global scale. \nEmerging Technologies in International Education\nDr. Adnan Qayyum and Dr. Levina Yuen\nMarch 7\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/qayyum-yuen-2025 \nThis is the third and final session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning.
