SUMMARY:The Provocations of Indigenous Cultures within a Conference: Using Métissage to Explore the In/Compatibility of Indigenous Ways of Knowing with Open Education
DESCRIPTION:At OE Global 2023 Indigenous ways of knowing and being were a fundamental component of the conference design and organization. Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizers established a collaborative governance approach to foster partnership and mutual guidance throughout the planning and execution stages. \nIn this session\, Dawn Witherspoon\, Darrion Letendre\, and Robert Lawson will perform métissage to recount the design and implementation of\, and personal experiences with\, a conference program that reflected the concept of two-eyed seeing\, navigating Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews. We will explore the incompatibility and compatibility of Indigenous ways of knowing with the ontological and epistemological assumptions embedded into open education. A fundamental question we examine is how the braiding of conference stories can unearth the interplay of Indigenous (nêhiyawîhcikêwin Plains Cree) ways of knowing with the values and practices of open education.

SUMMARY:OEWeek Live: Open Education Week Wrap Up (and What's Next?)
DESCRIPTION:This is the last of the OEWeek Live! sessions for Open Education Week 2025. These webcasts are set up as informal conversations. For each show we invite a group of open educators willing to have a discussion that lacks an agenda and slides with bullet points. \nThese conversational sessions start with sharing of their current projects\, activities\, and interests but flow into general discussions of what is happening in the world of open education. We also will share some perspectives on what we saw this week- there’s too much for any one person to know – and talk about maybe we can happen in the upcoming year. \n  \nGuests confirmed so far include: \n\nPeter Musser (ISKME/OER Commons) on what we curated through the OEWeek open assets collection efforts in OER Commons\nSusanne Grimm (OERinfo\, OER World Map) on what we added to the OER World Map during Open Education Week\nHeather Ross (University of Saskatchewan) on openness in general and specifically on open educational practices at USask\nBrian Lamb (Thompson Rivers University) on the OpenETC (Open EdTech Coop) and sharing open tech\, open pedagogy\, the role of open in a fallen and corrupt corporatized world\nAnne-Marie Scott (Independent Consultant) on the OpenETC\, Open Source\, all the opens\nJennifer Rogers (LibreTexts) on All things LibreTexts\n\nWatch live to send your questions and comments through the chat or watch the recording later \n\nLearn More: \n\nOpen Education Week https://oeweek.oeglobal.org/\nOE Week Live Schedule https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/oeweek-live-webcasts/7383

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies in International Education
DESCRIPTION:“Bridging the gap between theory and practice is essential for advancing education. While theoretical frameworks provide foundational understanding\, their real-world application ensures relevance and impact. Educators and institutions are challenged to translate scholarly insights into actionable strategies that address challenges in open and distributed education. This dynamic exchange between research and practice fosters innovation\, improves teaching effectiveness\, and enhances learning outcomes. Extending scholarship to practice also enriches research\, as practical applications often reveal new areas of inquiry\, leading to a continuous cycle of knowledge generation and refinement.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Drs. Adnan Qayyum and Levina Yuen will outline key emerging online technologies and their potential to enable and transform education on a global scale. \nEmerging Technologies in International Education\nDr. Adnan Qayyum and Dr. Levina Yuen\nMarch 7\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/qayyum-yuen-2025 \nThis is the third and final session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning.

SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. She is a Rose Isabella Kelly Fischer Endowed Professor. \n  \n  \n\nImage attribution\nBanner: Zoom background 1 by OEGlobal is licensed under CC BY 4.0. SUMMARY:Keynote: Open and the Oligarchs: Planting Seeds in a World on Fire (Dr. Robin DeRosa)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robin DeRosa has been working on open initiatives\, including projects around OER\, open pedagogy\, and open access to research\, for more than a decade. She has been interested not only in the practices that animate open\, but also in the values that power an open vision for the future of education and knowledge-sharing. But recently\, Robin has come to question the efficacy of the work in which she has been engaged. How can such well-conceived\, thoughtful praxis around “open” be gathering steam at the same time as our public educational institutions\, our libraries\, and our publishing models creep closer toward privatization or economic ruin? How can our community’s investments in equity and access be thriving even as global political contexts bend toward neoliberalism\, plutocracy\, and fascism? This presentation will reimagine the “tragedy of the commons\,” not as Garrett Hardin (mis)understood it in his seminal 1968 essay of that name\, but in its current state. As LA burns and Trump ascends\, we will pause and ask tough questions about where open education has gotten us. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Robin DeRosa is the Director of Learning & Libraries at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire (USA). She has previously been an English professor\, the chair of a customized major program for undergraduates\, and the director of a faculty development center. Robin is an advocate for public higher education and has been working on OER and open pedagogy initiatives at institutions around the world for more than a decade. SUMMARY:Keynote: Racing Towards a Wasted Future: Generative AI and the Resurgence of Nuclear Energy (Dr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia)
DESCRIPTION:As the potentials and promises of generative AI sweep into the field of Open Education\, educators and advocates have a holistic responsibility to think deeply and expansively about the known and still emerging environmental impacts of these technologies. Demand for energy by the hungry server farms that create so-called artificial intelligence is bringing damaging and dangerous energy practices back from the grave\, including the resurrection of previously shuttered coal and nuclear power plants. How can we as Open practitioners reconcile the long standing historical and contemporary violence of coal and nuclear power production with the desire to widely embrace and experiment with generative AI? This talk will review the most recent research on AI energy demands and the environmental impacts\, as well as provide a brief history and contextualization of the current issues with nuclear waste\, pollution\, and accidents in North America\, primarily in the United States and Canada. Attendees will be invited to reflect deeply on what we stand to lose and gain with the widespread adoption of generative AI in society\, and hopefully leave inspired to mindfully use generative AI\, with its current promise and future perils in mind. \n\n\nSpeaker bio: \nDr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia serves as Associate Professor and Open Education Librarian at the University of Idaho. His research interests span a wide range of topics\, notably community archives\, the history and current practices of BIPOC feminisms especially in libraries and information environments\, and environmental justice.
