SUMMARY:Free Books: Open Publishing at Concordia
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Open Education Month\, Concordia Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting open publishing at the Library and Concordia University Press (CUP). Together\, the Library and CUP collaborate to make scholarship and education free and accessible within and beyond the university. \nOpen Educational Resources (OER) are digital resources for teaching\, learning\, and research that are made available for use and re-purposing. They increase the variety of instructional resources in students’ learning experiences while lowering the financial barriers. OER in the form of open textbooks are a hallmark of Concordia’s OER program. Although open-access publications from university presses often do not permit repurposing in the same way that open textbooks do\, they are nonetheless free for students and can be adopted in courses. In parallel with open publishing\, Course Reserves also offer a free option for students. \nThis collaborative display illustrates how open education and open scholarship can nurture each other. As higher education becomes increasingly costly\, students stand to gain from the cost-saving benefits of viable alternatives to commercial textbooks. Meanwhile\, professors can choose to deepen their research and pedagogical impact by developing open-access and knowledge-mobilization plans to benefit students and the wider public. \nOrganized in six sections\, this display introduces students and faculty to the parallels between CUP and the Library’s OER program. In the vitrine and the digital counter\, you will find awareness efforts alongside physical and digital books from CUP and Concordia’s OER program. QR codes make these titles easily accessible\, while OER and CUP buttons and slogans promote the importance of open publishing. \nFinally\, the horizons of free course material options can be expanded through student advocacy and faculty pedagogy. We encourage students to nominate a course for open education and show their support for open publishing by wearing one of our buttons found at the Ask-Us Desk. We encourage faculty to consider open textbook grants\, course reserves\, and open-access university presses. \nLet’s reduce barriers to higher education together! \nCurated by the Library’s OER Team and Concordia University Press\, the exhibition will be on display from March 3 until April 30\, 2025. Special thanks to Zo Kopyna\, Chhayhee Sok\, Saelan Twerdy\, Meredith Carruthers and Rachel Harris. \nConcordia University Library supports open scholarship\, education\, and science. As part of this commitment\, the Library leads the University’s OER Program and continues to develop open scholarship initiatives and services\, such as our open guides and institutional repository. \nConcordia University Press is a non-profit publisher of peer-reviewed books. Concordia University Press is committed to barrier-free scholarship and our titles are available as free\, open-access e-books\, as well as for sale in thoughtfully designed print editions.

SUMMARY:OEW@Campus Luzern – Offene Lehrbücher: Zwischen allen Stühlen?
DESCRIPTION:Offene Lehrbücher: Zwischen allen Stühlen?\nNicole Krüger\, ZHAW Hochschulbibliothek\nIn Nordamerika werden OER und «Open Textbooks» fast synonym gebraucht. \nZoom-Link: https://hslu.zoom.us/j/68022940452?pwd=b9lShWWa7ZCNk8d8gCSHi8gUliqLFG.1   \n\n(English via Google Translate): \nOpen textbooks: Caught between all chairs?\nNicole Krüger\, ZHAW University Library \nIn North America\, OER and “open textbooks” are used almost synonymously. Extensive government funding went into the publication of textbooks\, which can now be found in the Open Textbook Library or the BCcampus Open Collection. Here\, a difference can be observed compared to OER practice in Europe: Why have textbooks received little attention in the  OER context so far? Why are they not part of DOAB\, the Directory of Open Access Books? Do open textbooks receive financial support – analogous to academic open access monographs? Are they part of library collections? The LIBER Educational Resources Working Group 2022-2024\, co-led by Nicole Krüger\, Helen Moore and Tamara Pianos\, investigated these questions. \nThe presentation is primarily aimed at people from OER and Open Access support. In addition to presenting the results of the working group and exchanging them with DOAB and the Open Textbook Library\, the aim is to exchange ideas for promoting this previously little-noticed form of OER. \nCampus Luzern cordially invites you to the free online presentation! The lecture will take place via ZOOM\, prior registration is not required. \n

SUMMARY:OEW@Campus Luzern – Auf dem Weg zu einer OER-Community: Einblicke\, Stolpersteine und Chancen
DESCRIPTION:Nora Bertram\, Regula Zwicky\, Universität Zürich \nWie baut man eine OER-Community auf? \nZoom-Link: \nhttps://hslu.zoom.us/j/63592301731?pwd=9AFzV6J68DLOXXr1tCSqtkDRLfnaH8.1   \n\n(English via Google Translate): \nTowards an OER community: insights\, stumbling blocks and opportunities\nNora Bertram\, Regula Zwicky\, University of Zurich\nHow do you build an OER community? This is precisely the question we address in our article – with honest insights and concrete examples from our practice. SUMMARY:OEW@Campus Luzern – Offenheitskompetenzen als Grundlage für Open Education: Chancen und Umsetzung
DESCRIPTION:Dr. \nZoom-Link:\nhttps://hslu.zoom.us/j/63036301423?pwd=oSaRlHMbDU8y8zRKbDcayVXNSibu3i.1  \n\n(English via Google Translate): \nOpenness Competencies as a Basis for Open Education: Opportunities and Implementation\nDr. Ronny Röwert\, Digital Learning Campus Schleswig-Holstein and Alliance for Free Education \nA more open educational practice can be the central driver for contemporary education in a digitally influenced society – but it requires an open attitude and practice among teachers and learners. The Alliance for Free Education has developed a model of openness competencies for teachers and learners that closes this gap in existing competency frameworks. In this lecture\, you will learn how openness competencies help to effectively integrate Open Educational Practices (OEP) and Open Educational Resources (OER) into educational practice and how they can be further developed.\n

SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. She is a Rose Isabella Kelly Fischer Endowed Professor. \n  \n  \n\nImage attribution\nBanner: Zoom background 1 by OEGlobal is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
