SUMMARY:Free Books: Open Publishing at Concordia
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Open Education Month\, Concordia Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting open publishing at the Library and Concordia University Press (CUP). Together\, the Library and CUP collaborate to make scholarship and education free and accessible within and beyond the university. \nOpen Educational Resources (OER) are digital resources for teaching\, learning\, and research that are made available for use and re-purposing. They increase the variety of instructional resources in students’ learning experiences while lowering the financial barriers. OER in the form of open textbooks are a hallmark of Concordia’s OER program. Although open-access publications from university presses often do not permit repurposing in the same way that open textbooks do\, they are nonetheless free for students and can be adopted in courses. In parallel with open publishing\, Course Reserves also offer a free option for students. \nThis collaborative display illustrates how open education and open scholarship can nurture each other. As higher education becomes increasingly costly\, students stand to gain from the cost-saving benefits of viable alternatives to commercial textbooks. Meanwhile\, professors can choose to deepen their research and pedagogical impact by developing open-access and knowledge-mobilization plans to benefit students and the wider public. \nOrganized in six sections\, this display introduces students and faculty to the parallels between CUP and the Library’s OER program. In the vitrine and the digital counter\, you will find awareness efforts alongside physical and digital books from CUP and Concordia’s OER program. QR codes make these titles easily accessible\, while OER and CUP buttons and slogans promote the importance of open publishing. \nFinally\, the horizons of free course material options can be expanded through student advocacy and faculty pedagogy. We encourage students to nominate a course for open education and show their support for open publishing by wearing one of our buttons found at the Ask-Us Desk. We encourage faculty to consider open textbook grants\, course reserves\, and open-access university presses. \nLet’s reduce barriers to higher education together! \nCurated by the Library’s OER Team and Concordia University Press\, the exhibition will be on display from March 3 until April 30\, 2025. Special thanks to Zo Kopyna\, Chhayhee Sok\, Saelan Twerdy\, Meredith Carruthers and Rachel Harris. \nConcordia University Library supports open scholarship\, education\, and science. As part of this commitment\, the Library leads the University’s OER Program and continues to develop open scholarship initiatives and services\, such as our open guides and institutional repository. \nConcordia University Press is a non-profit publisher of peer-reviewed books. Concordia University Press is committed to barrier-free scholarship and our titles are available as free\, open-access e-books\, as well as for sale in thoughtfully designed print editions.

SUMMARY:Liberating Curricula: Open Education for Decolonised and Internationalised Learning
DESCRIPTION:In an increasingly interconnected world educational practices and materials should evolve to be more inclusive and representative of diverse voices\, perspectives\, narratives and epistemologies. Through leveraging open educational resources\, open pedagogy\, and collaborative approaches to knowledge co-construction we can challenge hegemonic narratives and biases\, and create a more socially just and inclusive curriculum. This talk explores open educational practices as a transformative approach for curriculum internationalisation and decolonisation. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenter: Dr Surita Jhangiani\, University of British Columbia\n \nAs Interim Associate Dean\, Equity\, Dr. Surita Jhangiani provides strategic leadership to advance the Faculty’s equity priorities\, fostering transformative teaching\, innovative learning and leading-edge research guided by the highest scholarship\, collaboration\, equity and inclusion standards. \nDr. Jhangiani is the David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education\, providing support to increase interest\, programming and engagement in multicultural and anti-racist education\, and to assist schools to foster critical multiculturalism. She has received two Open Educational Resource Champion awards from the University of British Columbia and was recognized as the Faculty of Education’s 2023 Universal Design for Learning Fellow. SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. She is a Rose Isabella Kelly Fischer Endowed Professor. \n  \n  \n\nImage attribution\nBanner: Zoom background 1 by OEGlobal is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
\nLeitung: Martin Ebner\, Priv.-Doz. DESCRIPTION:For Open Education Week San Diego Community College District brings you this keynote talk by Brenna Clarke Gray\, Assistant Professor\, Learning Design and Innovation and Coordinator\, Educational Technologies at Thompson Rivers University. \nSession Description\nI don’t know about you\, but in this particular moment — politically\, economically\, culturally — I’ve never felt more sharply the distinction between my values as an educator and the realities of the world outside my classroom. To celebrate Open Education Week\, then\, let’s all take a moment to find hope in the possibilities and promises of open education. In this session\, through a little bit of theoretical framing and a lot of practical examples\, we’ll discuss how open resources and open practices can empower us as educators to build a more equitable\, accessible\, and engaging learning experience for our students and for those far beyond our classroom walls. Join me as we open our hearts and share the possibilities of open education in a moment when we all really need to remember how far our good work can spread. \nSpeaker Details\nBrenna Clarke Gray is an open educator and critical technologist powered by righteous indignation and lattes and based at Thompson Rivers University in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc\, where she co-founded the TRU Open Press. Her work explores the possibilities of a care-centred approach to the ethical and equitable use of educational technologies. Her most recent work includes the peer-reviewed scholarly teaching and learning podcast Community of Praxis and the forthcoming Routledge Introduction to Canadian Comics. She holds a PhD from the University of New Brunswick\, where she was a Canada Graduate Scholar. Outside of the university’s walls\, she is an avid reader\, compulsive baker\, and tired mum. If she was a creature in the Jim Henson cinematic universe\, she would be Cotterpin Doozer.

SUMMARY:AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit
DESCRIPTION:The African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA)\, in collaboration with OER Africa\, is pleased to announce the 2026 AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit\, scheduled for 3–4 March 2026. The virtual summit will convene librarians\, educators\, researchers\, policymakers\, and other stakeholders to explore how Open Education can expand access\, improve equity\, and transform learning outcomes across Africa. \nTheme: Open Education\, Open Possibilities\nOpen Education is reshaping the global learning landscape by expanding access to open educational resources and practices. It creates new pathways for inclusive\, quality\, and equitable education. This is particularly important for Africa\, which has the world’s youngest population\, with over 60 percent under the age of 25 and a median age of 19. Many young people and adult learners still face significant barriers to education due to inadequate resources and persistent equity gaps. Open Education presents an opportunity to address these challenges and to support Africa’s transformation into a global knowledge and innovation powerhouse. \nAfLIA strongly believes that African libraries have critical roles to play in bridging digital and resource gaps. Library professionals possess expertise in technology\, copyright\, and licensing\, positioning them as key partners in advancing Open Education. The 2026 virtual summit seeks to bring together stakeholders to share research\, case studies\, emerging models\, and visionary ideas that demonstrate how Open Education can enable transformative\, inclusive\, and equitable education across the continent. \n  \n  \n
