SUMMARY:Shifting Power: University Openness and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the University of Regina for an Open Education Speaker Series online presentation with Dr. George Siemens\, University of South Australia/ University of Texas (Arlington) \nSession Description: Universities have become end-consumers of AI. Unlike previous technology innovations\, where higher education played an active role in technology developments and adoption\, learner and institutional use of AI has advanced with only minimal voice from the university system itself. While frontier labs\, such as Anthropic and OpenAI\, have focused on offering services for learners\, they’ve largely sidestepped the system\, leaving universities as spectators. This talk will highlight the urgent need for universities to collaborate around shared data\, technology\, and services to ensure that the mission of serving learners remains central in the adoption of AI in courses and classrooms. When universities collaborate and pursue open standards\, they have a sufficiently powerful voice to shape the products and services offered by big tech companies\, shifting power from closed systems to the network of education institutions. \n  \nPresenter bio: George Siemens researches how human and artificial cognition intersect in knowledge processes. He co-founded Matter and Space – a human development platform that responds to the systemic impact of AI on learning\, human development\, and wellness. He now serves as Chief AI Officer at SNHU. He is the founding Director and Professor of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at University of South Australia and developed the Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at University of Texas at Arlington. He has delivered keynote addresses in more than 40 countries on the influence of technology and media on education\, organizations\, and society. His work has been profiled in provincial\, national\, and international newspapers (including NY Times)\, radio\, and television. He has served as PI or Co-PI on grants funded by NSF\, SSHRC (Canada)\, OLT (Australia)\, Intel\, Boeing\, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the Soros Foundation. He has received numerous awards\, including honorary doctorates from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and Fraser Valley University for his pioneering work in learning\, technology\, and networks. He holds an honorary professorship with University of Edinburgh. Dr. Siemens is a founding President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (http://www.solaresearch.org/).  In 2008\, he pioneered massive open online courses (sometimes referred to as MOOCs). George is President of the Global Research Alliance for AI in Learning and Education (GRAILE – www.graile.ai).

SUMMARY:OER in Tenure and Promotion at Virginia Tech
DESCRIPTION:In June 2026\, Virginia Tech added open educational resources (OER) and open source software (OSS) to university-level Tenure and Promotion Guidelines. This session will review this clarification\, present ways that Virginia Tech faculty have leveraged OER creation or adaptation in promotion dossiers\, and provide a guide to sources of available usage data. This usage data is most relevant to Virginia Tech-created OER\, but the model of data collection is transferable to other institutions. \nFor background on this presentation\, read: https://openvt.lib.vt.edu/2025/10/07/oer-promotion-tenure

SUMMARY:Stronger Together: The Network of Open Organizations
DESCRIPTION:The Network of Open Organizations is a global alliance of diverse institutions and leaders committed to expanding open education and access to knowledge worldwide. Launched in 2019 and coordinated by Open Education Global\, the Network brings together educational institutions\, NGOs\, inter-governmental bodies\, and other open advocates to collaborate on shared goals\, including supporting the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Educational Resources (OER) and advancing broader open education initiatives worldwide. By fostering ongoing dialogue\, mutual support\, and coordinated action\, the Network helps amplify collective efforts\, share best practices\, and align global\, regional\, and local strategies for openness in education and beyond. \nAt its core\, the Network serves as a learning and collaboration hub—a space where members exchange insights\, and also seek to co-develop initiatives\, and engage with complex challenges that no single organisation could address alone. \nThe Network of Open Organizations meets online on the first Tuesday of each month. Join us for the session during Open Education Week on Tuesday\, 3 March from 5:30 pm until 6:30 Paris time to engage with selected representatives of the Network of Open Organizations members\, learn about the network activities and future intentions and information on how to join.

SUMMARY:Open Education Solutions for Complex Times
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Regina for this special Open Education Week presentation\, “Open Education Solutions for Complex Times” with Anne-Marie Scott\, Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, BC. \nAbstract: Post-secondary institutions across Canada are facing a complex and uncertain future as they rapidly adjust to economic scarcity\, and it is clear that business-as-usual operating models will not support us to meet the challenges ahead. Compounding this is a tendency towards historical amnesia and constant reinvention; often the answers we need are already out there waiting to be discovered. The Commonwealth of Learning has a long history of working in contexts where complexity and uncertainty are the norm and has successfully used open education as an effective innovation toolkit. Drawing on examples\, this talk will outline the ways in which various elements of the open education ecosystem could be used to meet some of these big challenges in Canada head-on\, and (I hope) provide some inspiration to keep us moving forward. \nPresenter bio: Anne-Marie Scott is the Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, Canada where she supports COL’s mission and work in open learning for sustainable development across fifty-six countries. She is an internationally recognized expert in digital\, online\, and open education\, with leadership experience across higher education and the non-profit sector. She previously served as Deputy Provost of Athabasca University in Canada\, and before that spent nearly two decades at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. She serves on the Board of the Open Source Initiative and continues to teach in the Masters in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University in Canada.

SUMMARY:Be the change you want to see: Applications of Seamless learning. Research projects from the International Research Network for Innovative Sustainable and Seamless Education (IRN-ISSE)
DESCRIPTION:The International Research Network for Innovative Sustainable and Seamless Education (IRN-ISSE) is a global research partnership that began at mLearn 2018 at Concordia University in Chicago. The vision of IRN-ISSE is to build an international community of practice\, inviting researchers and specialists to collaborate for the greater good\, with a specific focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The mission of IRN-ISSE is to study\, support\, inform\, share\, and implement research globally to improve access to and quality of education worldwide. The goal is to stand together and learn with and from each other\, striving to remain at the forefront of innovative\, sustainable\, and seamless educational practice \nThe community has a global reach\, including Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, North America\, South America\, and India. The partnership is working on several initiatives\, such as: \n\nThe Seamless Learning Experience Design Model\, which identifies five themes relevant to designing a seamless learning experience: 1) seamless learning concepts\, 2) positive concepts\, 3) practical concepts\, 4) human concepts\, and 5) design concepts. Based on these five concepts\, a Seamless Learning Experience Design (SLED) framework was developed.\nResearch and ongoing work include the “Be the change to see the change” (this was the theme for interviews and larger podcasts) initiative\, and on-demand\, driven learning.\n\nWhat you can expect: \nDuring this webinar\, you will meet some of the partners in IRN-ISSE. You will hear about their research and ongoing initiatives. SUMMARY:Open Education as Anti-Fascism: Building Democratic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, higher education is facing growing authoritarian\, exclusionary\, and anti-democratic tendencies\, not only in politics\, but also in digital infrastructures\, platform economies\, and dominant narratives about technology and innovation. At the same time\, Open Education is often framed primarily as a technical or economic solution\, i.e.\, more efficient content production\, wider access\, lower costs. \nIn this session\, we will discuss how openness can function as a form of democratic resilience in times of polarization and techno-fascism.

SUMMARY:Open Education e Software Libero: convergenze e contaminazioni
\nEnglish version: \nOpen Education Italia is organising a discussion on the topic\, featuring two experts: Jonathan Poritz and Italo Vignoli. \nIn the first part of the webinar\, Jonathan Poritz – an alternative academic who has long been active in the Open world – will explore the points of contact between the Open Education and Free Software movements and will seek to draw some useful lessons for promoting Open approaches within education systems\, in Italy and beyond. In the second part\, Italo Vignoli will reflect on how the use of open software such as LibreOffice can represent not only a practical solution to many of the technical and legal issues that are too often overlooked\, but also a clear stance that can help to change the mindset of those working in Italian schools and universities. \nJonathan Poritz was for many years a professor of mathematics and computer science at various universities in the United States. At the same time\, he pursued a parallel career in applied computing\, working primarily on artificial intelligence\, cryptology and quantum computing in a range of companies and research centres. The open sharing of knowledge has been an important aspect of both careers. He moved to Italy four years ago and is now studying innovation law at the University of Pisa\, hoping to learn how to speak effectively to Italian and European policymakers and public officials. \nItalo Vignoli is the only Italian among the founders of the LibreOffice project. He serves as the project’s international spokesperson and coordinates media relations\, marketing and communication activities. He is also one of the founders and Honorary President of the LibreItalia Association. Since 2022\, he has been a UNESCO Ambassador for Software Heritage. Between 2016 and 2022\, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Open Source Initiative (OSI). From 2004 to 2010\, he took part in the OpenOffice project. He is a member of the Italian Linux Society and the Free Software Foundation Europe\, and holds a degree in Modern Literature from the University of Milan\, where he taught Human Geography from 1978 to 1982.

SUMMARY:Trent University OER Launch Party: OER? Oh! We Are!
DESCRIPTION:What happens when educators say yes to sharing?\nWhen students say yes to co-creating?\nWhen learning says yes to openness?  \nJoin us for the virtual launch of our new Open Education Resource; a project built on collaboration\, curiosity\, and the belief that learning is deepened when it’s shared.  \nThis won’t be a formal presentation. It’s a call and response experience. It’s an invitation to join a community.  \nWe’ll share the story behind the resource: why we built it\, what problems it hopes to solve\, and how it invites a response. You’ll hear short reflections from contributors\, see inside the resource itself\, and have space to respond: in the chat\, on the mic\, in ideas sparked for your own teaching and learning.  \nCome explore how this resource might liven your courses\, reduce barriers\, and open new pedagogical possibilities. Bring your curiosity. Bring a question. Bring a colleague or a classmate.  \nLet’s launch something and respond to what it becomes.  \nHosted by Terry Greene\, Senior eLearning Designer\, with collaborators Darcy Culp and Najah Wardat.  \nIf you have any questions\, please feel free to reach out to teachingcommons@trentu.ca \nUpdate\nOh!
