SUMMARY:Retrospective on Open Access Publishing
DESCRIPTION:“Open access (OA) ensures that scholarly research is freely accessible to all\, breaking down barriers to information due to subscription costs or institutional access limitations. This democratization of knowledge fosters equity\, enabling researchers\, educators\, policymakers\, and the public worldwide to engage with research findings without financial hindrance. Open access distribution facilitates collaboration\, innovation\, and the adaptation of research for and from diverse contexts—empowering institutions and individuals to improve practices and outcomes. By removing paywalls\, OA promotes transparency and accelerates the global exchange of ideas\, vital for addressing challenges including sustainability\, health crises\, and education and research disparities.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Professor Rory McGreal will provide a retrospective on OA publishing and the experience of IRRODL over the past twenty-five years as a Diamond open access journal. \nRetrospective on Open Access Publishing\nDr. Rory McGreal\nMarch 3\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/mcgreal-2025 \nThis is the first of three CIDER sessions celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of the open access journal\, The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning. These three free\, online sessions exploring the critical role of openness in education will be held on Monday\, March 3\, Wednesday\, March 5\, and Friday\, March 7\, 2025. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wikiwijs\, Wonderous Stories
DESCRIPTION:You want to be involved in a plan for a programme like Wikiwijs…’. So says the first sentence in the foreword to the Wikiwijs 2009-2011 programme plan\, written by the chairman of the programme’s steering group\, Fred Mulder. On 13 December 2009\, the Wikiwijs website was launched at a meeting in Breda. This (school) year therefore marks the 15th anniversary of Wikiwijs. \nBut before that launch could take place\, a lot had already happened. How did the idea of Wikiwijs actually originate? How did the Wikiwijs programme come about? Which activities were carried out during the five years of the programme? What was the ultimate outcome? And what lessons can we learn from it? \nIn two blogs\, Ben Janssen and Robert Schuwer will answer these questions. We do so because much can be learned from 15 years of working on OERs. In our view\, the approach Wikiwijs took is\, although 15 years ago\, still valuable for current initiatives. Especially the role the Dutch government played is particularly interesting. \nThe first blog post is already published last Friday. On Wednesday\, around noon (GMT+1)\, we aim to publish the second blog post. Both blogs are written in Dutch\, but translating online on the fly is of course possible. \n

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning
DESCRIPTION:“The rise of online education has transformed teaching and learning paradigms. These changes are fueled by advancements in technology and the demand for flexible\, inclusive access to education—even in times of war and epidemic. Online educational practices emphasize interactivity\, learner autonomy and self-direction\, and accessibility\, while theoretical frameworks have expanded to address issues such as openness\, digital equity\, attrition\, engagement in virtual environments\, and the design of learning-centered curricula. This evolution has created opportunities and challenges as researchers explore digital tools and platforms to measure if they enhance learning effectiveness and address diverse learning needs.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Dr. Connie Anderson and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson will review the role and impact of open and distributed learning over the last twenty-five years and explore how it may continue to evolve into the future. \nThe Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning\nDr. Connie Blomgren and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson\nMarch 5\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/blomgren-anderson-2025 \nThis is the second session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of the open access journal\, The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning. SUMMARY:Shifting Power: University Openness and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the University of Regina for an Open Education Speaker Series online presentation with Dr. George Siemens\, University of South Australia/ University of Texas (Arlington) \nSession Description: Universities have become end-consumers of AI. Unlike previous technology innovations\, where higher education played an active role in technology developments and adoption\, learner and institutional use of AI has advanced with only minimal voice from the university system itself. While frontier labs\, such as Anthropic and OpenAI\, have focused on offering services for learners\, they’ve largely sidestepped the system\, leaving universities as spectators. This talk will highlight the urgent need for universities to collaborate around shared data\, technology\, and services to ensure that the mission of serving learners remains central in the adoption of AI in courses and classrooms. When universities collaborate and pursue open standards\, they have a sufficiently powerful voice to shape the products and services offered by big tech companies\, shifting power from closed systems to the network of education institutions. \n  \nPresenter bio: George Siemens researches how human and artificial cognition intersect in knowledge processes. He co-founded Matter and Space – a human development platform that responds to the systemic impact of AI on learning\, human development\, and wellness. He now serves as Chief AI Officer at SNHU. He is the founding Director and Professor of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at University of South Australia and developed the Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at University of Texas at Arlington. He has delivered keynote addresses in more than 40 countries on the influence of technology and media on education\, organizations\, and society. His work has been profiled in provincial\, national\, and international newspapers (including NY Times)\, radio\, and television. He has served as PI or Co-PI on grants funded by NSF\, SSHRC (Canada)\, OLT (Australia)\, Intel\, Boeing\, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the Soros Foundation. He has received numerous awards\, including honorary doctorates from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and Fraser Valley University for his pioneering work in learning\, technology\, and networks. He holds an honorary professorship with University of Edinburgh. Dr. Siemens is a founding President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (http://www.solaresearch.org/).  In 2008\, he pioneered massive open online courses (sometimes referred to as MOOCs). George is President of the Global Research Alliance for AI in Learning and Education (GRAILE – www.graile.ai).

SUMMARY:Open Education Solutions for Complex Times
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Regina for this special Open Education Week presentation\, “Open Education Solutions for Complex Times” with Anne-Marie Scott\, Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, BC. \nAbstract: Post-secondary institutions across Canada are facing a complex and uncertain future as they rapidly adjust to economic scarcity\, and it is clear that business-as-usual operating models will not support us to meet the challenges ahead. Compounding this is a tendency towards historical amnesia and constant reinvention; often the answers we need are already out there waiting to be discovered. The Commonwealth of Learning has a long history of working in contexts where complexity and uncertainty are the norm and has successfully used open education as an effective innovation toolkit. Drawing on examples\, this talk will outline the ways in which various elements of the open education ecosystem could be used to meet some of these big challenges in Canada head-on\, and (I hope) provide some inspiration to keep us moving forward. \nPresenter bio: Anne-Marie Scott is the Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, Canada where she supports COL’s mission and work in open learning for sustainable development across fifty-six countries. She is an internationally recognized expert in digital\, online\, and open education\, with leadership experience across higher education and the non-profit sector. She previously served as Deputy Provost of Athabasca University in Canada\, and before that spent nearly two decades at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. She serves on the Board of the Open Source Initiative and continues to teach in the Masters in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University in Canada.

SUMMARY:Open Education as Anti-Fascism: Building Democratic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, higher education is facing growing authoritarian\, exclusionary\, and anti-democratic tendencies\, not only in politics\, but also in digital infrastructures\, platform economies\, and dominant narratives about technology and innovation. At the same time\, Open Education is often framed primarily as a technical or economic solution\, i.e.\, more efficient content production\, wider access\, lower costs. \nIn this session\, we will discuss how openness can function as a form of democratic resilience in times of polarization and techno-fascism.
