SUMMARY:Keynote: Open and the Oligarchs: Planting Seeds in a World on Fire (Dr. Robin DeRosa)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robin DeRosa has been working on open initiatives\, including projects around OER\, open pedagogy\, and open access to research\, for more than a decade. She has been interested not only in the practices that animate open\, but also in the values that power an open vision for the future of education and knowledge-sharing. But recently\, Robin has come to question the efficacy of the work in which she has been engaged. How can such well-conceived\, thoughtful praxis around “open” be gathering steam at the same time as our public educational institutions\, our libraries\, and our publishing models creep closer toward privatization or economic ruin? How can our community’s investments in equity and access be thriving even as global political contexts bend toward neoliberalism\, plutocracy\, and fascism? This presentation will reimagine the “tragedy of the commons\,” not as Garrett Hardin (mis)understood it in his seminal 1968 essay of that name\, but in its current state. As LA burns and Trump ascends\, we will pause and ask tough questions about where open education has gotten us. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Robin DeRosa is the Director of Learning & Libraries at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire (USA). She has previously been an English professor\, the chair of a customized major program for undergraduates\, and the director of a faculty development center. Robin is an advocate for public higher education and has been working on OER and open pedagogy initiatives at institutions around the world for more than a decade. You can read more about Robin at her website\, robinderosa.net \nDate: Tuesday\, May 13\, 2025 \nTime:11:00am – 12:00pm \nTime Zone:Saskatchewan Time \n  \n

SUMMARY:Open to All: Accessibility in the LibreVerse
DESCRIPTION:Open education only works if everyone can access it. That’s why LibreTexts is currently conducting a comprehensive accessibility audit of our platform and features\, with the results shaping both our updated conformance documentation and a clear roadmap to remove barriers for students and content authors alike. \nOur goal is to meet or exceed the Revised 508 Standards and WCAG 2.1 AA because accessibility isn’t a checkbox\, it’s a core part of what it means to build education that truly belongs to everyone. Accessibility conformance documentation is already available\, and we encourage anyone who encounters an accessibility concern to report it directly to us. We also provide a full suite of authoring tools to help content creators build with accessibility in mind from the start.

SUMMARY:The Future is Now: LibreTexts and AI
DESCRIPTION:The intersection of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is still emerging\, but momentum is growing rapidly. An important step forward came last year with the launch of the AI Co-Author tool\, designed to support OER development and improve accessibility remediation. Building on this progress\, the LibreTexts development team has introduced a comprehensive AI Initiative to expand and deepen AI integration across the LibreVerse ecosystem. \nThis presentation reviews the current state of AI development within LibreVerse\, highlighting tools already underway and early implementation efforts. It outlines short-term goals focused on pilot programs\, platform integration\, and faculty support\, as well as a long-term vision for a scalable\, interoperable\, and equity-centered AI infrastructure that advances teaching and learning nationwide. \nPlanned innovations include context-aware AI tutors embedded in digital textbooks; automated generation and evaluation of formative homework; AI-supported writing and research tools; and AI-guided coding and data science assistance within Jupyter environments. By embedding adaptive tutoring and personalized learning support throughout LibreVerse\, the initiative aims to reduce equity gaps and broaden access to high-quality resources. Instructors will gain AI-assisted tools for content creation\, grading\, analytics\, and pedagogical insight\, supported by professional development. Grounded in LibreTexts’ OER framework\, the initiative emphasizes transparency\, interoperability\, and evidence-based evaluation to ensure responsible and effective AI integration in open education.
