SUMMARY:Higher Education for Good Chapter Conversation with Jim Luke
DESCRIPTION:As 2024 highlight project  and exemplar of open collaboration\,  Higher Education for Good (HE4Good) has been out in the world a few months. With the support of co-editors Laura Czerniewicz and Catherine Cronin\, we are pleased to bring you for Open Education Week\, a series OE Week Live conversations focusing on deeper discussions of individual chapters. \nIn this session we invite you to discusser and explore the concept and meaning of the “open knowledge commons” described by author Jim Luke in Chapter 6\, Closing the factory: Reimagining higher education as commons. \n“The chapter encompasses the evolution of three imaginaries of higher education\, two of which have repeated historically across the globe. In the early 21st century\, an opportunity for a third imaginary has emerged\, one that holds great promise and I propose needs the attention and efforts of both academics and the larger society.” Jim describes the characteristics of the  two historic imaginaries as the “elite knowledge commons” and the “knowledge factory” and then challenges us to imagine what he calls the “knowledge commons.” \nJoin the conversation with Jim and co-editor Laura Czerniewicz to probe his construct of social imaginaries for higher education\, and the evolution he describes for the first two\,  the “elite knowledge commons” and the “knowledge factory.” How does these align or not with the desire to create that better future of higher education? Do we know we are “in the water”? How can academia and society shift the mode forward to the open knowledge commons? \nThis session will be streamed live to YouTube and you are invited to watch there and to send messages to our guests in the OE Week Live studio. Join us at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFj8MpH3VGg (this link is also where you can find the recording afterward). And if are interested in contributing to the conversation with our guests in the studio\, indicate this session on the OE Week Live sign up form. \nParticipants are asked to review chapter  6 in advance of this session  and to consider adding comments or questions to the chapter using Hypothes.is web annotation. \nWe look forward to having you be part of this HE4Good Chapter Conversation.

SUMMARY:Future Skills for a World Shaped by AI
DESCRIPTION:“AIComp – Future Skills for a Life World Shaped by AI” marks a pioneering endeavor in the realm of educational and professional development. It is developed through the NextEducation Research Group and presents the most comprehensive study to date on the subject. It sheds light on the evolving requirements that professionals face in both their careers and personal lives in an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence. \nThis groundbreaking study stands out as the first to adopt a fully action-competence-oriented approach\, reconstructing an empirical competency model directly from the data gathered from over 1\,600 professionals. The European skill model AIComp (Artificial Intelligence Competences) was meticulously developed through the collaborative efforts of the AI-Campus and AI-Campus Hub projects\, alongside with 13 partners from education\, research and industry. \nBy delving into the competency needs that emerge as AI becomes more integral to our professional and personal spheres\, AIComp offers invaluable insights into preparing for a future where artificial intelligence shapes significant aspects of our existence. This study not only maps out the terrain of future skills but also pioneers a methodological approach that promises to influence how we understand and respond to the demands of a world transformed by AI

SUMMARY:The power\, potential\, and problems of open education for sustainable development- presented by Nick Baker and Mark Lubrick
DESCRIPTION:Open education can be a powerful contributor to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs)\, but it requires a carefully considered approach to avoid compounding existing inequalities or contributing further to sustainability challenges with the rapid implementation of digital tools with questionable sustainability. Open Educational Practices (OEP) and Open Educational Resources (OERs) can contribute to expanded learning about each of the SDGs\, making knowledge available to a wide audience. OERs can also directly contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education)\, removing barriers to access. The 2019 UNESCO Recommendation on OER challenges educational institutions to support the transformation of education for sustainability by leveraging digital OER ecosystems and committing to a new social contract with high quality\, inclusive\, and sustainable education available to all the world’s citizens. While some universities have started to actively engage with this concept\, there needs to be a rapid acceleration and universality to this work that considers both local and global impact. \nThis session will explore how open educational practices can support sustainable development\, surface some of the challenges to this goal\, and discuss possible ways forward.

SUMMARY:Leading Conversations on Academic Integrity: OER for Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:This virtual panel and roundtable discussion identifies ways to incorporate discipline-based knowledge-building exercises on academic integrity in post-secondary classrooms. \nThe panelists deliberate on the concept of learning culture and how to create teachable moments for student engagement. \nThe event highlights the impact of developing OERs and uses the case of a UBC Aspire (ALT-2040) Learning Transformations project\, Discipline-based Approaches to Academic Integrity\, to contextualize the discussion. The scholar-practitioners will contextualize ways to: \n\nAddress questions about accessibility and equity and how these considerations contribute to building cultures of academic integrity;\nFocus on intellectual integrity in the context of creative writing;\nDiscuss ownership\, voice and identity in academic writing as important conversation starters on academic integrity; and\nUtilize an OER to support classroom discussion on academic integrity\n\nThe panel discussion will be followed by a roundtable Q&A with student representatives about the usefulness of discussing academic integrity using the OER. \nREGISTER NOW \nPANELISTS\n\nDr. Robin Attas\nDr. Anita Chaudhuri\nDr. Lisa Grekul\nDr. Saeed Sabzian\nHafizat Sanni-Anibire\nDr.
SUMMARY:Unlocking the Potential: Open Educational Practices and the Digital Transformation of Work-Integrated Learning Experiences
DESCRIPTION:This presentation delves into the transformative potential of open education in dismantling barriers for experiential learning within language minority contexts and in fostering an inclusive educational landscape. \nWe will first explore the concepts of experiential learning\, work-integrated learning (WIL)\, and open educational resources (OER)\, as well as provide context surrounding the creation of our OERs\, namely that this work has been spearheaded under the Consortium d’apprentissage expérientiel francophone de l’Ontario (CAPFO) program of eCampusOntario. \nWe will then dive into two OERs created within the context of CAPFO. The first OER will showcase our survey results from the WIL CAPFO Report in 2023 that canvas trends and challenges in the franco-ontarian sector. These insights will be complemented by an exploration of the WIL Framework\, a strategic tool developed within the CAPFO context to bolster educator engagement. \nBy sharing our experiences\, outcomes\, and collaborative frameworks\, we aim to inspire educators and institutions to embrace the power of open education in cultivating enriching experiential learning environments\, especially within language minority settings. \nWe are looking to share valuable insights and contribute to the ongoing discourse on the intersection of open education\, experiential learning\, and linguistic minorities to pave the way for a more accessible and inclusive educational future. \nThis presentation will help the audience explore the power of open education in breaking down barriers for experiential education in a language minority context.

SUMMARY:Open Bioinformatics Education for Professional Development A modular\, open education approach in Biochemistry- presented by Zareen Amtul
DESCRIPTION:Amid the increased demand for flexible learning experiences\, especially hybrid course offerings\, as well as an exponential growth in life science research data\, bioinformatics has become an exciting\, and popular skill set both in industry and academia. To increase students’ competencies and to get them familiarized with data science professions as well as to fulfil a substantial demand for technology use in post-secondary education\, we developed an open education resource containing a set of bioinformatic exercises into a capstone course of a graduate program. \nBioinformatic exercises were designed to teach students to navigate bioinformatic databases such as UniProt\, GenBank™\, BRENDA\, and SWISS-Model use built-in tools\, and software like MEGA\, and CHIMERA\, algorithms\, analyze data\, and perform programming in R and Python. The skillsets imparted by this hybrid bioinformatic pedagogical approach are meant to empower students to be able to leverage this knowledge for their future endeavours in the bioinformatics field. The student performance in the hybrid course and survey responses overwhelmingly suggested that greater\, and meaningful technology integration in teaching and learning going forward is direly needed.

SUMMARY:Generative AI\, Open Education\, and Climate Catastrophe - Professor Marco Seiferle-Valencia
DESCRIPTION:The UC Davis Library’s AggieOpen program is thrilled to host Open Education Librarian & Assistant Professor Marco Seiferle-Valencia as our invited speaker for 2024. Professor Marco Seiferle-Valencia will present “Generative AI\, Open Education\, and Climate Catastrophe” on Tuesday\, March 5th\, at 11:00 am PST via Zoom. \nWhile AI promises to revolutionize many fields\, including education\, this technology’s unsustainable carbon footprint and other devastating ecological impacts mean that revolutionary progress is far from guaranteed. In fact\, the rapid\, widespread adoption of energy and resource-hungry AI invites revolutionary regression. This year’s talk discusses the environmental impacts of generative AI by examining the often hidden ecological costs of these new tools and asks how we\, as open practitioners\, can ensure the burgeoning collaboration between AI tools and open education serves learners\, teachers\, and the environment.

SUMMARY:Accelerating Climate Action and Climate Justice Through Open Education
DESCRIPTION:Escalating climate disruptions and injustices demand that we keep developing and refining our forms of knowledge creation and sharing. Expanding learning opportunities through open educational resources and community-engaged open pedagogy practices can play an invaluable role in our collective response to the climate crisis and work toward a more resilient and equitable future.  \nThis moderated panel session highlights three inspiring open climate education projects in the U.S. that extend beyond conventional OERs\, with modular adaptable resources and engaging methods to reach more learners in more ways. Panelists and their projects are: \n\nDenise Linder (high school teacher\, Grafton MA): Climate Solutions Scenarios with En-ROADS\, a Subject to Climate lesson plan for high school teachers\nChristopher Rabe (postdoctoral associate\, MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative): the Climate Justice Instructional Toolkit\, with resources to support teachers infusing climate justice into a wide range of undergraduate courses and disciplines\nEdward Waisanen (platform and program manager\, University of Michigan): Gala\, a collaborative case study platform and community focused on sustainability\n\nThe session will be hosted and moderated by Curt Newton\, director of MIT OpenCourseWare\, and Richard Sebastian\, teaching and learning coach at Achieving the Dream. \nThe session will begin with brief presentations by each panelist\, followed by discussion among the panelists and moderators drawing out key learnings and points of resonance among the projects\, and close with time for attendees’ open Q&A and discussion.

SUMMARY:Augmenting OER with Open Source AI
DESCRIPTION:Join LibreTexts Founder and Executive Director\, Delmar Larsen\, and Head of External Education Programs for Sandbox AQ\, Marianna Bonanome as they discuss a new partnership to bring AI and OER together to help close the gender gap in the workforce. \nThis initiative is a collaborative effort to couple LibreTexts’ corpus (950\,000 webpages of OER content) with emerging AI so that OER texts can be equipped with a customized open source AI tutor. Intellectual isolation is a particular problem for adult learners who\, without close interactions with instructors and fellow students\, can lose focus. The AI tutor system will provide guidance to LibreTexts’ learning materials for individual students based on individual needs expressed in natural language. \n  \nAccess the recording for this presentation here:
