SUMMARY:Coalinga College Embraces Academic Freedom With LibreTexts
DESCRIPTION:Coalinga College received the ASCCC 2024-2025 Exemplary Program Award this year for the extraordinary feat of moving from 10% OER adoption rates amongst full-time faculty to 85%. Situated in a town of 17\,000\, Coalinga College serves the town and an area of  surrounding communities over 2000 square miles. \nSome of the Coalinga faculty join us today to talk about their understanding of students’ needs and how OERs have helped them engage their students in the learning process. OERs\, and LibreTexts’ Remixer tool\, have made it simple to include all and only the material they want to present\, in the order that they consider best\, without having to worry about students getting lost. \nFaculty are no longer bound by what a publisher thinks the content presentation should be. And they can ensure they have the materials they need from Day One\, so they no longer need to delay diving into the materials. Faculty time can be spent teaching instead of having to wait for students to have the books delivered. \nFour faulty members will discuss their experiences with OER adoption\, and how they continue to make change for their community.

SUMMARY:Educación basada en IA Generativa: la IAG como Recurso Educativo Abierto

SUMMARY:Open Education Week Celebration at Douglas College
DESCRIPTION:This Open Education Week\, the Douglas College Library\, with the generous support of BCcampus\, is hosting an Open Education Week Celebration on Wednesday\, March 5\, 2025! This event will be an opportunity to recognize achievements and to engage with\, learn from and share experiences with those who are interested in reducing course material costs for Douglas students. \nFor more than 10 years\, the faculty at Douglas College have contributed significantly to reducing commercial textbook costs for students. They have saved students over 7 million dollars ($7\,201\,134) by switching from a commercial textbook in their class to an open textbook. \nThis does not include the tremendous cost saving  for students when our faculty chose zero and/or low-cost course materials such as print or digital coursepacks\, freely available web content\, licensed digital materials accessible through the Library collection\, homework systems and more. \nThe Douglas College Library offers a range of services to support the work of faculty to move towards open or zero and/or low-cost materials\, and are excited that this support continues to expand as we develop staff expertise and offer tools such as TalisAspire. \nDouglas College Library is thankful to have received financial support from BCcampus to host this event.

\nPredavači: Domagoj Horvatović\, Dominik Kenđel i Ljiljana Jertec Musap\, Srce \nModeratorica: doc. dr. sc. Sandra Kučina Softić\, Srce \n  \nVrijeme i mjesto održavanja: 6. 3. 2025. od 11 do 12:30 sati\, putem sustava za webinare

SUMMARY:Support/tools for citizen dialogs and digital inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Are you working with digital support and guidance? Then this webinar is something  for you. The Network for Lifelong Learning Digital Inclusions (NLL) Digital Toolkit and Conversation tool is for you. The purpose of the toolkit is to facilitate a conversation between citizens who are facing digital challenges and the professionals who meet them on an everyday basis.\n\nDigital inclusion encompasses the activities necessary to ensure equal access to and use of information and communication technologies for participation in social and economic life\, including for education\, social services\, health\, social and societal participation. The Nordic Network (NLL) works to bridge the digital divide and improve adults’ understanding of digital participation. By supporting effective solutions in adult education and making recommendations to decision-makers\, the network helps to ensure that the adult population in the Nordic region has better opportunities to use digital community services\, participate in lifelong learning\, become active and critical citizens and users of technology\, and be better able to cope with an increasingly digital working life. During the webinar you will be familiarized with both the Conversation Tool and the Digital Inclusion Toolkit. In addition\, an example from Åland of citizen dialogs and how they work to reach citizens will be addressed. \n\n\nSpeakers\nEbba Ossiannilsson\, Ossiannilsson Quality in Open Online Learning Consultancy\, I4Quality.se and Network for Lifelong Learning Digital Inclusion\, Sweden\nCarola Eklund\, Department of Education and Culture  and Network for Lifelong Learning Digital Inclusion\, Åland

SUMMARY:Beyond Mandates: Fostering a Culture of Open Access Book Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Attempts to incentivise open access for books have\, to date\, largely centred around policy interventions that mandate publication in open formats and venues. Today we have OA book policies from funders in the UK\, Netherlands\, Austria\, Norway\, Ireland\, and Portugal; and the Council of the EU has said that for publicly funded research\, open access should be “the norm” for monographs as well as articles. \nBut the big stick of mandates can be a blunt instrument and very often add a heavy compliance burden on scholars and HE institutions. A more effective and lasting avenue to OA for books might be to embed open research and publishing cultures within universities and more widely. But currently\, HEIs often incentivise closed access publishing (deliberately or passively) by cleaving to the status quo in terms of recognising career advancement and in terms of publishing venues and how those venues are supported. How might this paradigm be shifted towards openness? \nThis session will feature short presentations from expert scholars\, librarians and publishers\, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. We will address these central questions: how can we incentivise researchers to publish their books OA? How can institutions signal more strongly that publishing openly should be important\, and reward those who do so? How might a culture of open research be fostered within and beyond the book publishing process? \nChanging the way the sector approaches reward and recognition for scholars could be a big driver for change in open access book publishing – going beyond mandates to offer positive reasons to embrace openness. \nJoin us for this online event\, presented in partnership by Copim and the Knowledge Equity Network. Featuring contributions from guest speakers\, Lucy Barnes (Senior Editor and Outreach Coordinator\, Open Book Publishers)\, Gavin Beattie (Associate Director: Research & Impact\, Libraries & Collections\, King’s College London)\, Jill Claassen (Section Manager\, Scholarly Communication & Research\, University of Cape Town)\, Kevin Sanders (Open Access Engagement Lead\, Open Book Collective) and Chaired by Sally Dalton (Head of Library Research Services: Open Research\, University of Leeds).
