SUMMARY:Maada’oonidiwag – Sharing Anishinaabe pedagogies into a Western OER- presented by Jamie Kechego and Lorie Stolarchuk
DESCRIPTION:Aanii and Biindige! Sharing personal Anishinaabe perspectives when weaving Indigenous Ways of Knowing into Western ways of teaching and learning was central to creating a module within an Open Educational Resource (OER). \nThis session explores lessons learned while creating the OER module on Indigenous Pedagogies\, which included videos\, images\, text\, and exercises. OER Videos were filmed in many settings\, including a visit to a Reserve and Residential School memorial. The videos are embedded into an eCampusOntario project on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) – Inclusivity\, Diversity\, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA). Universities Canada’s principles on Indigenous education recognize that universities across Canada must commit to closing the education gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. \nOut of 13 principles developed in close consultation with Indigenous communities\, principle 11 states that universities need to “recognize the importance of providing greater exposure and knowledge for non-indigenous students on the realities\, histories\, cultures and beliefs of Indigenous people in Canada.” Mino-bmaadizin (the good life) was tied into the module’s design\, knotted with references to nourishing learning spirits beyond the four walls of a classroom by including land-based and place-based learning. Teachings from the Medicine Wheel framework embraced the physical\, emotional\, spiritual\, and mental dimensions. Jaimie shares her personal connection to the Indigenous Pedagogy principle featured in each video. The goal as we advance would be to braid other Indigenous voices and connections to the various topics for future open educational videos.

SUMMARY:Open Education Week at USask
DESCRIPTION:A series of in-person events and sessions for USask instructors on Open Education \nSince USask began the campaign to support Open Education in the fall of 2014\, USask students have saved more than $5\,000\,000 through instructors supporting and adopting Open Educational Practices (OEP). In most cases\, this has come from instructors switching from commercial textbooks to Open Educational Resources (OER)\, primarily open textbooks. Each year a growing number of USask instructors choose to integrate open pedagogy activities in their courses\, where students are the creators of learning content instead of simply consumers of it. \nOpen Education Week highlights our USask instructors\, staff\, and students sharing their stories and accomplishments from open textbook creation and a new book launch\, how to engage and build OER with on campus supports\, to making the move to include OEP as part of curriculum renewal.

SUMMARY:Finding and Using Open Educational Resources
DESCRIPTION:Whether adapting an existing OER\, transitioning your course materials into the Open\, or creating an OER from scratch\, you will likely be using materials created by others. Because Open doesn’t just apply to the finished resource but all of the elements within the resource\, it is important to ensure that everything you include in your OER respects licensing requirements. In this session\, we will walk you through some strategies for finding open content to adapt or include within your learning resources\, as well as best practices for attribution. We will also provide you with guidance for developing your own search plan and documentation\, including a workflow and templates for curating resource details. \nThis session will cover: \n\nIdentifying open educational resource repositories and online spaces for finding content\nDeveloping a search plan for finding resources across platforms\nDeveloping a workflow for curating resource details for use in an open educational resource project\nIdentifying terms of use and licensing of resources and attribution practice

SUMMARY:Planes\, trains\, and generative AI: Recentering open education values in new technology adoption
DESCRIPTION:Many educators have felt pressure to climb aboard the generative AI train since it came barreling down the tracks. But what happens when we leap into new technologies without first pausing to imagine harms\, such as surveillance\, bias\, and discrimination? Join host Brenna Clarke Gray (Thompson Rivers University) and guest speaker Autumm Caines (University of Michigan – Dearborn) for a conversation about the pedagogical implications of generative AI. Can recentering the core values of the open education movement—equity\, inclusion\, transparency\, and social justice—in our pedagogy help us move forward in a good way? How do we introduce these considerations to our students and empower them to make informed decisions with new technologies? We’ll consider these questions and more in our hour together. \nThis event celebrates Open Education Week (March 4-8\, 2024). It is organized by the BC Open Education Librarians group (BCOEL) and generously sponsored by BCcampus\, with additional support from Kwanlten Polytechnic University\, snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ – Langara College\, and University Canada West. \nNote: registration for this event ended on 03/03/2024.  \nImage courtesty of Tommy Jepsen via Pexels

SUMMARY:Empowering and mentoring graduate students with professional and lifelong learning skills
DESCRIPTION:Graduate students face many challenges during their academic journey and often lack formal training in professional and learning skills. To address these challenges and support student success\, our diverse\, multi-institutional team designed a self-directed course to equip graduate students with core skills\, empower them with tools and strategies\, and foster an inclusive\, equitable\, and healthy environment.  This course includes five modules: mentorship\, strategic learning\, project management\, academic resilience\, and navigating difficult conversations (including power dynamics). \nPresentation attendees will: gain insights into the values and principles that underlie the course design\, receive the findings of our multi-institutional\, multi-discipline course pilot\, with recommendations for incorporating the course in a variety of settings\, and receive the results of an autoethnographic analysis of the team’s process\, offering a framework that they may apply in their own context.

SUMMARY:Accessibility in Open Education with H5P
DESCRIPTION:We continue to celebrate Open Education Week at our second event focussed on Accessibility and H5P in open resources. During this event\, we will be hearing from two fantastic speakers from Australia and Canada. They will share their experiences working on open resources and how to make them accessible and interactive through H5P and Pressbooks. \nDuring this event\, we will:\n\nexplore why accessibility and inclusion are so important to openness\,\ndiscuss why H5P has been adopted for Open Textbooks\,\noutline some of the affordances and barriers to accessibility and openness with H5P\,\nexplain why taking openness as an attitude is important to accessible resources.\n\n\nKey speaker: Nikki Andersen\nNikki Andersen\, Open Education Content Librarian at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)\, champions open educational practices\, specializing in open textbooks via the Pressbooks platform. With a diverse background\, including roles as a Copyright Officer and Diversity and Inclusion Officer\, Nikki edits the Australasian Open Educational Practice Digest. She contributes to CAUL’s Open Educational Resources Professional Development Program Project Team and ASCILITE’s Open Educational Practice Special Interest Group. \nNikki\, who identifies as disabled and Deaf\, advocates for inclusion\, diversity\, equity and accessibility (IDEA)\, recognized by awards for creating accessible digital learning environments. Her work intersects open educational practice\, social justice\, and student success\, highlighted by her editing of the 2022 Australian Edition of Enhancing IDEA in OER. \n\nKey Speaker: Simon Lolliot\nDr. Simon Lolliot\, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia\, earned his doctorate in social psychology at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. His research focuses on the role of intergroup contact in reconciliation and the impact of secondary transfer effect\, “a phenomenon whereby contact with members from one outgroup not only improve attitudes towards that outgroup\, but to other outgroups as well.” At UBC\, he collaborates with Drs. Toni Schmader and Andrew Baron\, exploring ingroup identity\, multiculturalism\, and diversity beliefs. \nSimon introduced H5P activities to UBC’s open psychology textbook\, investigating interactivity’s impact on learning and advocating for screen-reader accessibility. Passionate about optimising teaching materials\, he emphasises H5P’s potential to support inclusive education. \nRegister now via Humanitix

SUMMARY:Library Dialogue | How can we open up our education at WUR?
DESCRIPTION:On 5 March\, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Library is organising a round-table discussion on Open Education. What’s WUR’s vision for Open Education? What are the practical issues that teachers run into when adopting open teaching and learning methods? And what infrastructure and solutions are available to open up our education at WUR? Your opinion is important! WUR teachers\, staff and students are cordially invited to join the dialogue and share their experiences. \n\n\nWhat is Open Education?\nOpen Education aims to enhance the access\, inclusiveness and flexibility of education\, often by using digital technologies and open licenses \nThe cornerstone of Open Education lies in Open Educational Resources (OER). These educational materials are openly licensed to allow everyone to freely use\, adapt and share the resource. OER can include textbooks\, lecture notes\, videos\, quizzes\, and other learning materials. OER are both free of charge and free of legal barriers. Considering this\, they reduce costs for students and enable teachers to adapt the materials to meet their specific students’ needs. \nThe Library Dialogue is taking place within the framework of the Open Education Week 4- 8 March 2024. \nProgramme\nThe Library Dialogue provides space for different perspectives and opinions on how we can open up our education at WUR. We’ll start with presentations by Nicolien Schmaal\, manager of WUR’s Open Science and Education programme\, and Sabien van Harten\, Education Policy Officer Education. \nAfterwards\, we’ll break into small groups to discuss different aspects of Open Education\, including: \n\nCopyright considerations for (open) educational materials\nDrivers and obstacles to the adoption of Open Educational Resources\nSupport and tooling for using Open Educational Resources\nHow to create Open Educational Resources
