SUMMARY:Accessibility in Open Education with H5P
DESCRIPTION:We continue to celebrate Open Education Week at our second event focussed on Accessibility and H5P in open resources. During this event\, we will be hearing from two fantastic speakers from Australia and Canada. They will share their experiences working on open resources and how to make them accessible and interactive through H5P and Pressbooks. \nDuring this event\, we will:\n\nexplore why accessibility and inclusion are so important to openness\,\ndiscuss why H5P has been adopted for Open Textbooks\,\noutline some of the affordances and barriers to accessibility and openness with H5P\,\nexplain why taking openness as an attitude is important to accessible resources.\n\n\nKey speaker: Nikki Andersen\nNikki Andersen\, Open Education Content Librarian at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)\, champions open educational practices\, specializing in open textbooks via the Pressbooks platform. With a diverse background\, including roles as a Copyright Officer and Diversity and Inclusion Officer\, Nikki edits the Australasian Open Educational Practice Digest. She contributes to CAUL’s Open Educational Resources Professional Development Program Project Team and ASCILITE’s Open Educational Practice Special Interest Group. \nNikki\, who identifies as disabled and Deaf\, advocates for inclusion\, diversity\, equity and accessibility (IDEA)\, recognized by awards for creating accessible digital learning environments. Her work intersects open educational practice\, social justice\, and student success\, highlighted by her editing of the 2022 Australian Edition of Enhancing IDEA in OER. \n\nKey Speaker: Simon Lolliot\nDr. Simon Lolliot\, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia\, earned his doctorate in social psychology at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. His research focuses on the role of intergroup contact in reconciliation and the impact of secondary transfer effect\, “a phenomenon whereby contact with members from one outgroup not only improve attitudes towards that outgroup\, but to other outgroups as well.” At UBC\, he collaborates with Drs. Toni Schmader and Andrew Baron\, exploring ingroup identity\, multiculturalism\, and diversity beliefs. \nSimon introduced H5P activities to UBC’s open psychology textbook\, investigating interactivity’s impact on learning and advocating for screen-reader accessibility. Passionate about optimising teaching materials\, he emphasises H5P’s potential to support inclusive education. \nRegister now via Humanitix

SUMMARY:Finding and Remixing Great OER with Pressbooks Directory
DESCRIPTION:One of the key advantages of Open Education is the ability to reuse and adapt existing content. Luckily\, this also addresses some of its biggest challenges: time to create\, localization\, and visibility. However\, navigating through the vast sea of open educational resources can be overwhelming. \nJoin us for this quick 30 minute session about the Pressbooks Directory – a free\, open-to-everyone repository of over 6\,000 resources across 170+ institution covering a wide range of subjects. With many of these resources being openly licensed and all of them being entirely free to read\, you can find your perfect resource to either share or adapt for your educational needs. \nWe’ll walk you through how to use the Pressbooks Directory to 1) find the content you want to reuse or take inspiration from\, 2) reuse and adapt this content for specific classroom needs and 3) how you can add to this growing library.

SUMMARY:Empowering Course Design with Open Educational Resources (OER) in Learning Management Systems (LMS)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Shahram Fardadvand. \nThe integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) with Learning Management  Systems (LMS) such as Moodle and Canvas is redefining course design by  enabling educators to create accessible\, flexible\, and dynamic learning  experiences. This session explores how Pressbooks\, an open-source publishing platform\, improves LMS capabilities by simplifying the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) into well-structured course designs. Pressbooks offers powerful export options for designing courses that combine chapters and materials from diverse OER sources. Educators can remix\, adapt\, and integrate content into unified course modules while retaining the interactivity and accessibility essential for today’s learners. \nThis presentation demonstrates how Pressbooks empowers educators to build flexible courses tailored to their curriculum by embedding resources directly within LMS platforms. Educators can improve teaching by using Pressbooks’ easy integration. This integration helps deliver content better and engages learners more. Examples of successful course designs will show how combining material from different Open Educational Resources (OER) improves teaching and learning. \nParticipants will learn to utilize Pressbooks and the LMS to create interactive\, accessible\, modular courses. This method provides equitable access to quality education and enables educators to tailor learning for diverse audiences.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Using Pressbooks
DESCRIPTION:Pressbooks is an online platform for creating books (and other book-like learning materials)\, including open educational resources (OER). It enables authors and publishers to design\, format\, and share their books in several ways\, including in web-based and digital/ebook formats\, or as print-ready PDFs. Pressbooks is used by independent authors and educational institutions around the world. In this hands-on webinar\, you will learn how to use Pressbooks to create\, build\, and adapt online books and OER. We will cover the basics of structuring your book\, adding and formatting content\, and briefly look at some ways you can enhance your book with embedded media (like images\, video\, and interactive H5P activities). \nIf you do not already have a USask Pressbooks account\, one will be provided for you\, along with a “sandbox” book that you can explore during the session and continue building with later.
