SUMMARY:Beyond the Classroom: Student editors improve Wikipedia (Wiki Education Speaker Series)
DESCRIPTION:At the center of Wiki Education’s work are the thousands of postsecondary students across the United States and Canada we support each term. Tasked with improving Wikipedia as part of their coursework but often new to editing\, the students work through Wiki Education’s series of trainings and exercises to successfully contribute to thousands of articles across disciplines\, filling in some of Wikipedia’s knowledge equity gaps and improving historically underrepresented topic areas. In this panel\, four students will share reflections from their Wikipedia assignments\, including their perspectives on learning to edit WIkipedia\, create public-facing scholarship\, and contribute to the largest\, most read encyclopedia in the world. \nPanelists: \n\n\n\nEkaterina Schiavone Hennighausen\, George Washington University\nJoseph Sugalski\, University of Notre Dame\nJianan Li\, Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California\, Los Angeles\nJohnny Shanahan\, North Carolina Central University- School of Library and Information Science\n\n\n\nThis edition of the Wiki Education Speaker Series is hosted by Wiki Education’s Brianda Felix\, who first edited Wikipedia as an assignment during her undergraduate studies at UCLA. Brianda now supports instructors and students with their own Wikipedia assignments as one of our Wikipedia Experts. \nJoin Wiki Education as we bring together experts in Wikimedia and open knowledge for lively discussions of topics relevant to our communities. Wiki Education hosts regular\, Zoom-based conversations\, and you’re encouraged to take part! Sign up for any topics that are of interest to you\, and join as our panelists share their thoughts\, moderated by a Wiki Education staff member.

SUMMARY:Pedagogy without Borders: New Frontiers of Teaching and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Since the 2023 KTT conference\, new educational technologies and the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) have radically transformed higher education. Both faculty and students are consistently adapting their teaching and learning to the challenges and opportunities created by these technologies. This conference invites faculty\, staff\, and others to share how they are re-imagining teaching and learning in ways that shift our pedagogical borders\, and think creatively about the new frontiers we are facing together in teaching and technology. What technologies are you using in your teaching? What are the opportunities these technologies afford you as an instructor? How do they impact student learning? How are you currently navigating challenges in your teaching and learning? \nPresenters were welcome to submit proposals for one of two conference tracks: one focused specifically on AI and another on other contemporary issues related to educational technologies. \nConference “Pre-Show”\nPedagogy without Borders: New Frontiers of Teaching and Technology \n \nFormat: The conference will be delivered virtually. All conference elements including the student panel\, keynote talk\, and conference presentations will be held over Zoom. \nSchedule: https://pedagogywithoutborders.sched.com/list/simple

SUMMARY:DWeb Meetup — Bluesky & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual meetup where we will discuss Bluesky\, AT Protocol\, and the future of decentralized social media. \nIn 2019\, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey\, posted a series of tweets announcing that the company was funding a small team of researchers to “develop an open and decentralized standard for social media”. Now fast forward 5 years later — that project is now known as AT Protocol\, better known by Bluesky\, the social network that is the first implementation of the protocol. Bluesky has now surpassed 30 million users worldwide\, as users have quit Twitter in droves over the policies enforced by its billionaire owner. \nOne of the promises of Bluesky is that anyone can build a competing platform using the Authenticated Transfer (AT) Protocol. So even if Bluesky were to be compromised in some way\, the protocol promises to allow users to easily move their data and identity to other competing services. \nSo what would it take to create an alternative social network to Bluesky? \nThere’s at least one major effort to do just that. Free Our Feeds is a new multi-stakeholder foundation working to build an entire ecosystem of interconnected apps and services that would not be controlled by any one company or organization. \nJoin us at our next virtual meetup on February 19\, 2025 11:30am PT to discuss Bluesky\, AT Protocol\, and efforts to build an open\, interoperable ecosystem of social networks. \nSPEAKERS \n\nMallory Knodel\, Social Web Foundation\nBryan Newbold\, Bluesky\nBoris Mann\, ATMosphere Conference

SUMMARY:International Mother Language Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:UNESCO will celebrate the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day\, reaffirming the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in fostering dignity\, peace\, and understanding. \nUNESCO estimates that there are 8\,324 languages\, spoken or signed. Out of these\, around 7\,000 languages are still in use. However\, linguistic diversity is under threat\, with many languages disappearing at an accelerated pace in our rapidly changing world. \nLearning in one’s mother tongue enhances comprehension\, engagement\, and critical thinking\, particularly for marginalized communities\, but 37% of learners in low- and middle-income countries lack this opportunity. Multilingual education addresses these gaps\, boosting participation\, retention\, and socio-emotional development\, while also supporting global goals like gender equality\, climate action\, and sustainable communities. UNESCO champions multilingualism as a powerful tool for inclusive education and meaningful global engagement. \nIn February\, UNESCO will celebrate the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day\, reaffirming the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in fostering dignity\, peace\, and understanding. This milestone highlights decades of efforts to preserve mother tongues\, safeguard cultural heritage\, and improve education. \nThe “Languages matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day” event will underscore the urgency of accelerating progress on linguistic diversity to build a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2030. It also supports the International Decade of Indigenous Languages\, emphasizing the role of languages in achieving global development goals. The event will review progress\, showcase successful multilingual education practices\, and advocate for inclusive language policies that respect all communities. \nThe two-day event will feature technical dialogues (20 February)\, high-level sessions (21 February)\, cultural performances\, and an exhibition celebrating global linguistic diversity\, all accessible through live streaming and interpretation. \nUNESCO estimates that there are 8\,324 languages\, spoken or signed. SUMMARY:From Plagiarism to Postplagiarism: Shifting from Punitive to Pro-Active Approaches to Academic Integrity in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:This is the closing keynote for the American University in Cairo’s 2025 CLT Symposium. \nThis session is about shifting away from a punitive mindset\, when it comes to academic integrity to set up students for success in and beyond the classroom. There is no question that teaching\, learning and assessment have changed since generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT and similar apps have become ubiquitous over the past few years. We can be ethical or unethical about how these tools are used in our classrooms and beyond. In this session\, we will talk about students\, faculty and leaders’ responsibilities for upholding and modeling academic integrity in ways that set up students for success today\, tomorrow and beyond. \nThis session is not about how to use specific tools. Instead\, we will delve into the broad ethical and practical implications of AI for education and business. A key takeaway from this talk is how academic integrity provides a foundation for ethical decision-making beyond the classroom\, in the workplace and everyday life. \nAbout the Speaker\nSarah Elaine Eaton\, PhD\, a professor at the Werklund School of Education\, University of Calgary\, Canada is an award-winning educator\, researcher and leader. She leads transdisciplinary research teams focused on the ethical implications of advanced technology use in educational contexts. Eaton also holds a concurrent appointment as an honorary associate professor at Deakin University\, Australia. \n  \nAbout the Symposium\nThe CLT Symposium brings AUC faculty together to share their innovative pedagogical experiences and ideas\, and to learn from international speakers on themes related to imagination in education\, academic integrity in the age of AI and reimagining emerging technologies. Sub-themes this year will include human-centered teaching in the age of AI\, academic integrity in the post-plagiarism era\, and experiential learning. \nThis year the hybrid symposium will offer a variety of workshops\, roundtables and virtual/hybrid keynotes on February 16- 19 and 25\, 2025. \nRegister to watch online Sarah Eaton’s closing keynote. \n
