SUMMARY:From Plagiarism to Postplagiarism: Shifting from Punitive to Pro-Active Approaches to Academic Integrity in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:This is the closing keynote for the American University in Cairo’s 2025 CLT Symposium. \nThis session is about shifting away from a punitive mindset\, when it comes to academic integrity to set up students for success in and beyond the classroom. There is no question that teaching\, learning and assessment have changed since generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT and similar apps have become ubiquitous over the past few years. We can be ethical or unethical about how these tools are used in our classrooms and beyond. In this session\, we will talk about students\, faculty and leaders’ responsibilities for upholding and modeling academic integrity in ways that set up students for success today\, tomorrow and beyond. \nThis session is not about how to use specific tools. Instead\, we will delve into the broad ethical and practical implications of AI for education and business. A key takeaway from this talk is how academic integrity provides a foundation for ethical decision-making beyond the classroom\, in the workplace and everyday life. \nAbout the Speaker\nSarah Elaine Eaton\, PhD\, a professor at the Werklund School of Education\, University of Calgary\, Canada is an award-winning educator\, researcher and leader. She leads transdisciplinary research teams focused on the ethical implications of advanced technology use in educational contexts. Eaton also holds a concurrent appointment as an honorary associate professor at Deakin University\, Australia. \n  \nAbout the Symposium\nThe CLT Symposium brings AUC faculty together to share their innovative pedagogical experiences and ideas\, and to learn from international speakers on themes related to imagination in education\, academic integrity in the age of AI and reimagining emerging technologies. Sub-themes this year will include human-centered teaching in the age of AI\, academic integrity in the post-plagiarism era\, and experiential learning. \nThis year the hybrid symposium will offer a variety of workshops\, roundtables and virtual/hybrid keynotes on February 16- 19 and 25\, 2025. \nRegister to watch online Sarah Eaton’s closing keynote. \n

SUMMARY:Free Books: Open Publishing at Concordia
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Open Education Month\, Concordia Library is pleased to present a new display highlighting open publishing at the Library and Concordia University Press (CUP). Together\, the Library and CUP collaborate to make scholarship and education free and accessible within and beyond the university. \nOpen Educational Resources (OER) are digital resources for teaching\, learning\, and research that are made available for use and re-purposing. They increase the variety of instructional resources in students’ learning experiences while lowering the financial barriers. OER in the form of open textbooks are a hallmark of Concordia’s OER program. Although open-access publications from university presses often do not permit repurposing in the same way that open textbooks do\, they are nonetheless free for students and can be adopted in courses. In parallel with open publishing\, Course Reserves also offer a free option for students. \nThis collaborative display illustrates how open education and open scholarship can nurture each other. As higher education becomes increasingly costly\, students stand to gain from the cost-saving benefits of viable alternatives to commercial textbooks. Meanwhile\, professors can choose to deepen their research and pedagogical impact by developing open-access and knowledge-mobilization plans to benefit students and the wider public. \nOrganized in six sections\, this display introduces students and faculty to the parallels between CUP and the Library’s OER program. In the vitrine and the digital counter\, you will find awareness efforts alongside physical and digital books from CUP and Concordia’s OER program. QR codes make these titles easily accessible\, while OER and CUP buttons and slogans promote the importance of open publishing. \nFinally\, the horizons of free course material options can be expanded through student advocacy and faculty pedagogy. We encourage students to nominate a course for open education and show their support for open publishing by wearing one of our buttons found at the Ask-Us Desk. We encourage faculty to consider open textbook grants\, course reserves\, and open-access university presses. \nLet’s reduce barriers to higher education together! \nCurated by the Library’s OER Team and Concordia University Press\, the exhibition will be on display from March 3 until April 30\, 2025. Special thanks to Zo Kopyna\, Chhayhee Sok\, Saelan Twerdy\, Meredith Carruthers and Rachel Harris. \nConcordia University Library supports open scholarship\, education\, and science. As part of this commitment\, the Library leads the University’s OER Program and continues to develop open scholarship initiatives and services\, such as our open guides and institutional repository. \nConcordia University Press is a non-profit publisher of peer-reviewed books. Concordia University Press is committed to barrier-free scholarship and our titles are available as free\, open-access e-books\, as well as for sale in thoughtfully designed print editions.

SUMMARY:Being a Teacher is Difficult- Open Educational Resources Can Help Us
DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, being a teacher is a challenge. The curriculum evolves\, the social context changes\, the graduate’s profile is (or should be) entirely different. \nFor undergraduate students aiming to become teachers\, preparation is now more intense\, more varied and more demanding than ever. They will be working with generations of students whose basic and specialized competencies\, namely declarative knowledge (knowing how to communicate)\, procedural knowledge (abilities – knowing how to do something)\, as well as attitudes and values (the way in which we relate to what we know and do)\, will be built in the context of a flexible and customized academic journey. \nHow are such teachers trained? How will they work with their students? Open educational resources could contribute to a better correlation between teaching-learning-assessment practices and the competencies that need to be fostered in students. How do we select these resources? Can we build them ourselves? How? \nQuestions such as these will be discussed during a workshop organized by the Laboratory for Didactical Innovation\, intended mainly for students enrolled in the psycho-pedagogy module.

SUMMARY:Ready for Take-off? How Emerging Technologies are Fuelling New Approaches Around OER in the UK & the US
DESCRIPTION:Today we are faced with emerging technologies such as (Gen)AI\, which have incredible potential – yet also significant risks and challenges. During this panel session at the Northeast OER Summit\, we will hear from two forward-looking universities in the UK and the US about their views and experiences with (Gen)AI and OER. While both are unique in terms of their local context\, challenges and levels of experience with OER\, they are unified by their ambition to locally grow OER success and by their high expectations for its future. \nFrom this session\, expect to learn more about practical and real-world examples of (Gen)AI use at these two universities and their library today: how it is used to identify OER gaps\, how to understand local OER potential as well as convincing senior leadership to get behind this. Moreover\, expect to walk away with concrete ideas for how we can fuel a scaleable OER future at any institution and why now is the time really for this to take off. \nDuring this panel session\, we will hear from two different institutions in the UK and the US about their views and experiences with (Gen)AI and OER. While both are unique in terms of their local context\, challenges and levels of experience with OER\, they are unified by their ambition to locally grow OER success and by their high expectations for its future. You’ll hear practical and real-world examples of (Gen)AI use\, such as how it is used to identify OER gaps and to understand the potential of OER. \nWe’ll hear from each of the panelists about where they are with OER today and why they feel now is the time for OER to take off. \n  \nDal Badesha\, Head of Learning Resources and Student Engagement\, Coventry University. Dal oversees the learning resources and student engagement team at Coventry University. She plays a crucial role in making sure students can find and use learning resources\, including OER. \nWilliam Walters\, Executive Library Director\, Manhattan University. William Walters is the executive library director at Manhattan University. His current research focuses on scholarly communication\, academic librarianship\, AI in higher education\, nonprofit management\, and assessment. In one of his latest publications he took a deep dive into the online discoverability of open textbooks. \nTom Mosterd\, Co-Founder & Director\, Higher Education\, Sylla. Tom is one of the cofounders of Sylla\, a new technology solution that helps libraries and faculty to easily find\, assess and adopt OER tailored to their teaching. At Sylla he works on ensuring new technologies are used for the benefit of libraries.
