SUMMARY:Open for Antiracism: Leveraging Open Education to Support Antiracism in the Classroom\, 4 years in review
DESCRIPTION:In this 45-minute panel discussion\, we address the question: “How can the open education field engage effectively with antiracist pedagogy?” The Open for Antiracism Program (OFAR) provides an example from its four years of programming that supports. California community college faculty to transform their classrooms to be antiracist through the affordances of OER and open pedagogy. Now in its fifth year\, OFAR has supported almost 200 instructors from over 40 institutions to learn to adapt and author OER\, integrating antiracist activities and perspectives and co-creating materials with their students. \n Two propositions inform the design of OFAR: \n\nAcademics wish to change their classroom practices to be antiracist and need guidance on promising practices and a safe place to explore with peers;\nOER and open pedagogy can be effective tools to transform classrooms to be antiracist.\n\nProgram participants learn about antiracist pedagogy\, OER\, and open pedagogy. Participants then implement a change to their teaching by integrating OER or open pedagogy to make their class antiracist. Participants receive ongoing support through webinars\, coaching\, and OER support.  \nIn this session\, attendees will learn about program design and research on faculty perceptions and student outcomes. In addition\, attendees will hear from one of the program’s course facilitators about the successes and challenges of leading faculty in a discovery of the intersections between open education and antiracist pedagogy. The audience will be invited to share how they can apply this work in their own context to improve student success for marginalized and underserved students. \nPanelists:\n\nLaura Dunn\, Program Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Teaching\, Learning\, and Assessment\, Santa Clara University\nJames Glapa-Grossklag\, Co-Director\, Open for Antiracism\, Dean\, Educational Technology\, Learning Resources and Distance Learning\, College of the Canyons\nJoy Shoemate\, Course Developer and Facilitator\, Open for Antiracism\, Director of Online Education\, College of the Canyons\n\nRegistration is required

SUMMARY:Curation as a Teaching Strategy
DESCRIPTION:We typically associate the word “curation” with art galleries and museums\, but with the burgeoning availability of open education resources\, it can also be part of a content creation strategy. \nSifting through the vast amounts of relevant content online can be challenging\, but also presents opportunities to selectively collect astonishing and high-quality pieces\, carefully authored by others and potentially of great value to your learners. Curating existing online materials can also offset resource-intensive media productions\, such as filming and creating videos that are normally included in content-focused designs. This presentation will focus on the process of finding\, evaluating\, selecting\, arranging\, annotating and contextualizing existing and quite often\, freely-available\, online learning materials in order to create a rich learning experience. \nWhether you plan to curate all of the content\, or also want to create some your own\, we will explore what mix is right for you\, and look at a few tools that can help make the process easier.

SUMMARY:The Future of Pedagogy: Ethical and Inclusive AI in OER Development
DESCRIPTION:This session explores the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing Open Educational Resources (OER) while ensuring ethical implementation. By proposing a framework to integrate ethical and inclusive AI practices\, it emphasizes transparency\, fairness\, privacy\, and accountability. The session demonstrates how AI can scale content creation\, improve accessibility through translation and adaptive technologies\, and personalize learning experiences\, all while promoting equity and inclusivity in education. Drawing on Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, we will discuss inclusive practices that support the future of OER\, addressing ethical challenges such as algorithmic bias and offering strategies for responsible\, open\, and equitable AI adoption.

SUMMARY:The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other – Aggie Open Invited Speaker\, Jessie Loyer
DESCRIPTION:The UC Davis Library’s AggieOpen Invited Speaker Series addresses important issues in Open Education and allows speakers to share their research with a broader audience. Our 2025 Invited Speaker\,  Indigenous Engagement Librarian Jessie Loyer\, will explore the history of Open Access and draw upon histories of caretaking in her talk\, “The Agreements that Allow Us to Care for Each Other.” \n“In this time of rising fascism\, white supremacy\, and dehumanization\, practitioners of open pedagogies can ask ourselves: what agreements have shaped the caring impulse behind our work? How do agreements such as treaty-making between Indigenous nations and nation-states inscribe intergenerational caretaking? How can we learn from our predecessors’ choices to build connections that allow us to survive and thrive?” \nJoin us during this year’s Open Education Week as Jessie considers these questions alongside participants through her scholarship on Indigenous relationality in digital spaces\, Open Education\, and digital kinship.  \nAbout the Speaker: Jessie is Cree-Métis and a member of Michel First Nation. She is the Indigenous Engagement Librarian at the University of Alberta in Calgary and a guest on Treaty 7 and Blackfoot territory. Her research examines Indigenous perspectives on information literacy\, supports language revitalization\, and creates ongoing research relationships using the nêhiyaw minâ otipêmisiw concept of kinship.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Affordable and Accessible Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Canadian Coalition for Affordable Learning \nWith the recent decrease in international learners studying in Canada and with threats of trade wars and tariffs looming\, the Canadian Coalition for Affordable Learning is presenting an exclusive workshop about accessible and affordable learning in postsecondary education. \nOn March 4 at 2pm EST\, join Alexandra Marcaccio (Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries)\, Amanda Coolidge (BCcampus)\, Carley McDougall (Campus Manitoba)\, Clint Lalonde (BCcampus) and Robert Luke (eCampusOntario) to learn about the best practices in digital education\, open education\, and more. Together\, we’ll discuss how we can provide learners with better access to postsecondary education during a time of economic uncertainty. \nDuring times of economic recession people tend to go back to school\, especially for programs oriented around skills. With the recent reduction in international education and with threats of trade wars and tariffs looming\, a focus on accessible and affordable learning is even more important – to encourage more people to reskill and upskill\, and to access learning when and how they need it. Accessible and affordable learning is about supporting digital by design education at scale by fostering inclusion in digital environments and offering options for learning that engage multiple modalities – face to face\, hybrid\, and online. Supporting open education and the use of Open Educational Resources is common among our organizations. These provide important low-cost learning resources for students\, promoting access and engagement. \nThe workshop includes a panel discussion\, a showcase of successful initiatives across Canada\, and a facilitated group discussion. Discover how we can work together to create a more equitable and affordable educational landscape for students across Canada.

SUMMARY:WikiAfrica Hour's Offline Wikis – Kiwix Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:How do we share free knowledge with people who have no stable internet? How do you identify the right offline solution\, if you cannot see it in action online first?\n \nMany steps must be taken before offline solutions can benefit the people they are designed for\, some of which are quite tricky.  \nIn this OEWeek25 special\, following the January edition of WikiAfrica Hour: Offline Wikis\, we invite Offline Wiki experts to demonstrate their offline solution. We hope this will make one of the many steps towards offline—the decision phase—easier by showing what you should expect from this platform before you spend hours setting up the hardware\, sourcing to the right offline platform\, downloading it\, and then adding it to your hardware.  \nIn the hot seat for this session is:\n✔️ Stephane Coillet-Matillon\, who will demonstrate Kiwix \n
