SUMMARY:OE Week Live! March 5 Open Exchange on AI
DESCRIPTION:Open Education Week 2025 is happening this week and we are hosting a few of our OEWeek Live webcasts as informal conversations. For each show we invite a group of open educators willing to have a discussion that lacks an agenda and slides with bullet points. \nThere seems no end to the talk and sometimes yelling about Artificial Intelligence. So here’s more!  This special show aims to bring some thoughtful exchanges from open educators who are willing to be part of a conversation that ideally avoids taking sides but share their experiences and perspectives\, especially with regards for open education\, bringing both critical and practical approaches.  \nCan we place ourselves on the Eh! Aye! Venn Diagram? \nEh? Aye! Venn diagram Cartoon by @visualthinkery is licensed under CC-by-sa. SUMMARY:Open Pedagogical Practices: How to be Open in your classroom
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, you will hear from Dr. Robert Lawson and Gayle St. Denis about the foundation of open pedagogy and the opportunities it presents. Open pedagogy empowers students to become involved in the development or co-development of educational resources. At some institutions\, students are now co-creating multiple-choice questions\, case studies\, Wikipedia articles\, and even textbooks. \nIn this session you will review how open education can promote social justice and provide students with the 21st-century skills they will need upon graduation. You will also explore ways to scaffold this approach for you and your students. Come join us to learn more about this exciting and rewarding learning approach!

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning
DESCRIPTION:“The rise of online education has transformed teaching and learning paradigms. These changes are fueled by advancements in technology and the demand for flexible\, inclusive access to education—even in times of war and epidemic. Online educational practices emphasize interactivity\, learner autonomy and self-direction\, and accessibility\, while theoretical frameworks have expanded to address issues such as openness\, digital equity\, attrition\, engagement in virtual environments\, and the design of learning-centered curricula. This evolution has created opportunities and challenges as researchers explore digital tools and platforms to measure if they enhance learning effectiveness and address diverse learning needs.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Dr. Connie Anderson and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson will review the role and impact of open and distributed learning over the last twenty-five years and explore how it may continue to evolve into the future. \nThe Evolution of Open and Distributed Learning\nDr. Connie Blomgren and Professor Emeritus Terry Anderson\nMarch 5\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/blomgren-anderson-2025 \nThis is the second session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of the open access journal\, The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning. SUMMARY:Empowering Course Design with Open Educational Resources (OER) in Learning Management Systems (LMS)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Shahram Fardadvand. \nThe integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) with Learning Management  Systems (LMS) such as Moodle and Canvas is redefining course design by  enabling educators to create accessible\, flexible\, and dynamic learning  experiences. This session explores how Pressbooks\, an open-source publishing platform\, improves LMS capabilities by simplifying the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) into well-structured course designs. Pressbooks offers powerful export options for designing courses that combine chapters and materials from diverse OER sources. Educators can remix\, adapt\, and integrate content into unified course modules while retaining the interactivity and accessibility essential for today’s learners. \nThis presentation demonstrates how Pressbooks empowers educators to build flexible courses tailored to their curriculum by embedding resources directly within LMS platforms. Educators can improve teaching by using Pressbooks’ easy integration. This integration helps deliver content better and engages learners more. Examples of successful course designs will show how combining material from different Open Educational Resources (OER) improves teaching and learning. \nParticipants will learn to utilize Pressbooks and the LMS to create interactive\, accessible\, modular courses. This method provides equitable access to quality education and enables educators to tailor learning for diverse audiences.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Using Pressbooks
DESCRIPTION:Pressbooks is an online platform for creating books (and other book-like learning materials)\, including open educational resources (OER). It enables authors and publishers to design\, format\, and share their books in several ways\, including in web-based and digital/ebook formats\, or as print-ready PDFs. Pressbooks is used by independent authors and educational institutions around the world. In this hands-on webinar\, you will learn how to use Pressbooks to create\, build\, and adapt online books and OER. We will cover the basics of structuring your book\, adding and formatting content\, and briefly look at some ways you can enhance your book with embedded media (like images\, video\, and interactive H5P activities). \nIf you do not already have a USask Pressbooks account\, one will be provided for you\, along with a “sandbox” book that you can explore during the session and continue building with later.

SUMMARY:Seeking âsokanihkew – a conversation about bridging 40 years of copyright and First Nation’s knowledge
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1980s\, Alexander Wolfe wanted to save his family and community oral tradition stories\, so he wrote a book called “Earth Elder Stories.” Harvey Knight from Muskoday First Nation assisted in the writing of the book. \nHarvey will talk about the book’s history (why oral tradition was committed to print) and discuss how oral tradition stories should be used in libraries and communities now and in the future. Andrea Jonasson\, a Saskatchewan Polytechnic instructor\, will talk about her experience using the stories in her classroom. You can still catch our event recordings\, if you missed the registration. \nParticipants are invited to bring their experiences with using traditional knowledge in the classroom.
