SUMMARY:Tricky CC License Questions Call in Show (OEWeek Live)
DESCRIPTION:This is a special themed topic OEWeek Live for Open Education Week 2025 featuring a team of Creative Commons Experts\, facilitators of the Creative Commons Certificate program. \nYes choosing a license from the list is one thing\, but there are always complexities that arise in practice. We’ve asked our panel to come with a few “tricky” questions but we want to also give the audience a chance to pose theirs. As always\, we are not offering legal advice (we will here “IAmNotALawyer”) but a great opportunity to hear our guests describe their approach to answering CC questions. \nGuests confirmed so far include: \n\nShanna Hollich (Creative Commons)\nJonathan Poritz (Independent consultant\, and CC Certificate facilitator)\nJennifer Hughes (CC Certificate facilitator)\nJennifer Campbell (CC Certificate facilitator)\nSuzanne Wakim (CC Certificate facilitator)\n\nWatch live where we we invite tricky CC questions and comments from the audience sent through the chat. Or submit them ahead of time via the call-in web form https://forms.gle/MFK1b8Hm2bBGvc4B7 or watch the recording later: \n\nLearn More: \n\nOpen Education Week https://oeweek.oeglobal.org/\nCC Certificate Program\, https://certificates.creativecommons.org/ \nOE Week Live Schedule https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/oeweek-live-webcasts/7383\nCopyright First Responders Pacific Northwest https://copyrightfirstresponderspnw.org/\n\nFeatured Image: Composite image including Old TV – Time Tunnel – Cameron Highland flickr photo by liewcf shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA) license with Open Education 2025 Week banner by  Mario Badilla at OEGlobal and shared under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Participants will be able to help co-design the future of affordability and sustainability\, with an eye towards finding common definitions and shared languages to ensure OER and other resources can support keeping post secondary education affordable for all learners.

SUMMARY:Finding and Using OER
DESCRIPTION:One of the biggest barriers to OER adoption and use is finding the right resource. In this session\, we will look at some McMaster-specific resources that will help you in your search (including McMaster’s OER by Discipline Guide version 2.0 and the OER Finding Service)\, explore some OER repositories\, and consider some strategies to fine tune your results. We will also look at how you can evaluate the OER you’ve found for possible use in your teaching.

SUMMARY:Practicing Democratic Education with a Course-Based Custom GPT and Dialogic Prompts
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on interactive workshop presented by Dr Olga Shugurova explores the innovative use of AI such as custom GPT models and dialogical prompts (Matusov\, ChatGPT4\, Smith & Shugurova\,2023) to create democratic open educational resources (OERs). \nThe use of conversational AI in education has shown promising results in enhancing learning outcomes (Chiu et al.\, 2023). A systematic review by Henry et al. (2021) highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary and critical approach to AI literacy. Labadze et al. (2023) reported that chatbot technology significantly improves learning achievement\, explicit reasoning\, and knowledge retention. \nDr Shugurova will demonstrate how educators can build their own course-based GPT that caters to diverse student goals\, interests\, needs and creates a psychologically safe learning environment. \n\nParticipants will learn how to:\nDesign and fine-tune custom GPT models for specific educational contexts\nCraft effective dialogical prompts that engage students and promote critical thinking without any technical skills\nIntegrate course content to create comprehensive\, interactive learning experiences that inspire learning\nAddress ethical considerations and potential biases in this GPT-powered educational pathway\n\nThe workshop will showcase the practical examples of custom GPT applications in various disciplines\, highlighting their potential to democratize education. It will also discuss strategies for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity when implementing these technologies. \nThrough hands-on activities and live demonstrations\, attendees will gain practical experience in developing their own course-based GPT. The session will conclude with a collaborative discussion on the future of AI in open education and its implications for democratic education. \nThis workshop is suitable for educational leaders\, educators\, instructional designers\, and educational technologists interested in exploring the intersection of AI and open education. Participants will leave with actionable insights and resources to begin implementing custom GPT in their own educational contexts.

SUMMARY:Interview: OER in the Pacific – Shikha Raturi
DESCRIPTION:In this interview\, Dr Shikha Raturi discusses the evolution of OER in the Pacific\, emphasising the role of regional collaborations\, institutional policies\, and government support. She highlights key initiatives\, such as Fiji’s early adoption of an OER policy and the University of the South Pacific’s engagement in localisation efforts to ensure cultural relevance. Challenges include the slow pace of localisation\, the need for greater teacher training\, and the importance of policy development and capacity building. She recommends systematic policy implementation\, resource development\, and continuous monitoring and research to enhance OER adoption in the region.

SUMMARY:Growing OERs Across Institutions: A Collaborative Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Join BCIT instructor Julia Alards-Tomalin and University of Alberta’s Valerie Miller to explore the exciting evolution of a cross-institutional OER project. \nLearn how Valerie’s educational game\, “Become an Earth Doctor\,” sparked a collaboration that led to BCIT students creating expansion decks focused on local BC ecosystems. This collaborative approach fosters a “growing” OER that benefits both institutions and beyond. This inspiring story highlights the power of OERs to bridge distances and create collaborative learning opportunities.
