SUMMARY:Practicing Democratic Education with a Course-Based Custom GPT and Dialogic Prompts
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on interactive workshop presented by Dr Olga Shugurova explores the innovative use of AI such as custom GPT models and dialogical prompts (Matusov\, ChatGPT4\, Smith & Shugurova\,2023) to create democratic open educational resources (OERs). \nThe use of conversational AI in education has shown promising results in enhancing learning outcomes (Chiu et al.\, 2023). A systematic review by Henry et al. (2021) highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary and critical approach to AI literacy. Labadze et al. (2023) reported that chatbot technology significantly improves learning achievement\, explicit reasoning\, and knowledge retention. \nDr Shugurova will demonstrate how educators can build their own course-based GPT that caters to diverse student goals\, interests\, needs and creates a psychologically safe learning environment. \n\nParticipants will learn how to:\nDesign and fine-tune custom GPT models for specific educational contexts\nCraft effective dialogical prompts that engage students and promote critical thinking without any technical skills\nIntegrate course content to create comprehensive\, interactive learning experiences that inspire learning\nAddress ethical considerations and potential biases in this GPT-powered educational pathway\n\nThe workshop will showcase the practical examples of custom GPT applications in various disciplines\, highlighting their potential to democratize education. It will also discuss strategies for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity when implementing these technologies. \nThrough hands-on activities and live demonstrations\, attendees will gain practical experience in developing their own course-based GPT. The session will conclude with a collaborative discussion on the future of AI in open education and its implications for democratic education. \nThis workshop is suitable for educational leaders\, educators\, instructional designers\, and educational technologists interested in exploring the intersection of AI and open education. DESCRIPTION:Open Education is a teaching and learning approach that utilizes unrestricted access to learning materials\, collaborative knowledge creation and inclusive pedagogical practices in order to increase access to knowledge. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore the strategies that instructors at UBC are using to open their classrooms\, incorporate new resources and perspectives in their learning environments\, and contribute to their students’ learning beyond the classroom. DESCRIPTION:Join LibreTexts Founder and Executive Director\, Delmar Larsen\, as he shows you how to build assignments in LibreTexts open homework and assessment platform\, ADAPT. \nParticipants will learn how to build autograded questions based on four technologies – H5P\, WebWork\, IMathAS\, and native (QTI) – that can be used interchangeably to allow for maximal impact. \nCurrently sponsored by the California Education Learning Lab (CELL)\, ADAPT is free for all California instructors and students. For educators outside of California\, ADAPT is available at cost–with a price point far below what traditional publishers charge.

SUMMARY:Vectors of Trust: Practicing Reciprocal Values in Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:In eduspaces we talk about values in nebulous terms. We believe in open\, we believe in barrier-free\, we believe in social justice\, we believe in student-focused pedagogies. But what are these values as praxis for those of us who support student-focused spaces? \nIn this keynote\, Dr. Ann Gagné will discuss how we are currently living through a crisis of trust in higher education\, institutionally\, governmentally\, societally\, and within our own communities. She will support reflection on how trust is a vector\, with both magnitude and direction that impacts the work we do and the work we want to do.  By highlighting broken reciprocal values and support systems\, this talk defines the moral injury seen in our eduspaces and gives participants the opportunity to leave with tangible next steps to promote trust as reciprocal and etymologically radical. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nDr. Ann Gagné (she/her) is Senior Educational Developer\, Accessibility & Inclusion at Brock University and a sessional instructor at George Brown College. She has worked in higher education in Ontario at colleges and universities for 21 years. Her work focuses on the need for accessible pedagogies through holistic awareness of disabled learners\, faculty\, and staff lived experience to decrease barriers to inclusion in higher education. She has facilitated workshops and keynotes on accessible pedagogy\, accessible event design\, accessible social media practices\, and trauma-aware UDL.  In March 2023 she started her own podcast Accessagogy\, which talks about accessibility and pedagogy in short (under 15 minute) episodes. \nBC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) is grateful for the support of BCcampus who has co-funded this event.
