SUMMARY:Integrating AI to Produce OER using OER Conversion Tool convOERter
DESCRIPTION:With the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies nowadays\, it is beneficial to use these technologies effectively to create Open Educational Resources (OER). This talk introduces the essentialness of using generative AI technology in the OER context\, particularly by applying a Text-to-Image model in the OER conversion tool “convOERter.” \n“convOERter” is a web-based tool that has been developed to convert existing educational materials containing images into ones with a Creative Common (CC) license. The development of the conversion tool greatly eases the process of creating OER content\, as it automatically captures the images in the original materials and allows educators to search for a replacement image that is CC-licensed in OER portals. However\, despite the substantial collection of high-quality images provided by these portals\, finding a replacement image that precisely aligns with the educator’s requirements remains challenging due to the static nature of any database. \nGenerative AI refers to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new content\, like text\, images\, music\, audio\, and videos based on human input. In the field of image generation\, various models are now available which offer a valuable opportunity for generating high-quality OER content. When educators cannot find suitable replacement images in Creative Commons portals\, employing a Text-to-Image AI model becomes essential for generating appropriate images. In this talk\, we will introduce the OER conversion tool and present the first steps towards integrating AI models within the tool.

SUMMARY:The Provocations of Indigenous Cultures within a Conference: Using Métissage to Explore the In/Compatibility of Indigenous Ways of Knowing with Open Education
DESCRIPTION:At OE Global 2023 Indigenous ways of knowing and being were a fundamental component of the conference design and organization. Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizers established a collaborative governance approach to foster partnership and mutual guidance throughout the planning and execution stages. \nIn this session\, Dawn Witherspoon\, Darrion Letendre\, and Robert Lawson will perform métissage to recount the design and implementation of\, and personal experiences with\, a conference program that reflected the concept of two-eyed seeing\, navigating Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews. We will explore the incompatibility and compatibility of Indigenous ways of knowing with the ontological and epistemological assumptions embedded into open education. A fundamental question we examine is how the braiding of conference stories can unearth the interplay of Indigenous (nêhiyawîhcikêwin Plains Cree) ways of knowing with the values and practices of open education.

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies in International Education
DESCRIPTION:“Bridging the gap between theory and practice is essential for advancing education. While theoretical frameworks provide foundational understanding\, their real-world application ensures relevance and impact. Educators and institutions are challenged to translate scholarly insights into actionable strategies that address challenges in open and distributed education. This dynamic exchange between research and practice fosters innovation\, improves teaching effectiveness\, and enhances learning outcomes. Extending scholarship to practice also enriches research\, as practical applications often reveal new areas of inquiry\, leading to a continuous cycle of knowledge generation and refinement.” (Anderson et al.\, 2025) \nIn this session\, Drs. Adnan Qayyum and Levina Yuen will outline key emerging online technologies and their potential to enable and transform education on a global scale. \nEmerging Technologies in International Education\nDr. Adnan Qayyum and Dr. Levina Yuen\nMarch 7\, 2025\, 11am MT\nhttp://www.cideresearch.ca/session/qayyum-yuen-2025 \nThis is the third and final session in the CIDER series celebrating Open Education Week 2025 and the 25th anniversary of The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Copyright Confidence From Basics to AI
DESCRIPTION:Navigating copyright is essential for anyone working with Open Educational Resources\, but the world of copyright sometimes feels daunting or confusing. Join us for a 90-minute webinar led by members of the Copyright First Responders Pacific Northwest designed to help demystify copyright basics and fair use principles. We’ll also spend time thinking about how to build confidence with copyright and look at “hot topics” including the issue on everyone’s mind lately: AI and copyright. Through practical scenario-based discussions\, you’ll gain confidence in navigating copyright considerations for OER and other educational materials. \nThis session offers a supportive environment for faculty\, librarians\, and instructional designers to build their copyright confidence. Using a mixture of presentations and scenario-based discussions\, we will walk through real-world scenarios and dedicate significant time to addressing your specific questions about copyright in OER creation and adaptation.

SUMMARY:Interview: OER and Localisation – Professor Lynne Bowker
DESCRIPTION:In this interview\, Professor Bowker emphasises the importance of localisation in OER\, noting that adapting language and cultural references increases student engagement. She highlights AI-driven automatic translation as a promising tool for localisation but stresses that human intervention is necessary for cultural adaptation\, accuracy\, and relevance. Collaboration among faculty\, language experts\, and students is key to effective localisation\, ensuring both linguistic and contextual appropriateness. She recommends using technology alongside human expertise\, piloting OER with students for feedback\, and fostering interdisciplinary teamwork to enhance the accessibility and impact of localised educational materials.

SUMMARY:Education: The Future is Open – Lecture with Richard Baraniuk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Education: The Future is Open” – A Lecture by Richard Baraniuk\, founder of OpenStax \nA grassroots movement is sweeping through the academic world. The “OpenEd” movement is based on a set of intuitions that are shared by a remarkably wide range of academics: that knowledge should be free and open to use and re-use; that collaboration should be easier\, not harder; that people should receive credit and kudos for contributing to education and research; and that concepts and ideas are linked in unusual and surprising ways and not the simple linear forms that traditional media present. This is a pivotal moment for the OpenEd community to come together as education is reshaped by advances in AI\, evolving student needs\, and expanding global challenges. \nDr. Richard G. Baraniuk is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice University and founder and director of OpenStax. He launched Connexions in 1999 as a platform for open knowledge sharing\, which evolved into OpenStax\, the world’s largest OER publisher with more than 70 digital textbooks used by 7 million college and high school students this school year. He also leads SafeInsights\, the US National Science Foundation’s national infrastructure for education research. Baraniuk has been active in AI theory research and education applications for 15 years\, and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors\, AAAS\, and IEEE. He has received numerous research and education awards\, including the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal\, the James H. Mulligan\, Jr. Education Medal\, and the Harold W. McGraw\, Jr. Prize in Education.
