SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. She is a Rose Isabella Kelly Fischer Endowed Professor. \n  \n  \n\nImage attribution\nBanner: Zoom background 1 by OEGlobal is licensed under CC BY 4.0. SUMMARY:Keynote: Open and the Oligarchs: Planting Seeds in a World on Fire (Dr. Robin DeRosa)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robin DeRosa has been working on open initiatives\, including projects around OER\, open pedagogy\, and open access to research\, for more than a decade. She has been interested not only in the practices that animate open\, but also in the values that power an open vision for the future of education and knowledge-sharing. But recently\, Robin has come to question the efficacy of the work in which she has been engaged. How can such well-conceived\, thoughtful praxis around “open” be gathering steam at the same time as our public educational institutions\, our libraries\, and our publishing models creep closer toward privatization or economic ruin? How can our community’s investments in equity and access be thriving even as global political contexts bend toward neoliberalism\, plutocracy\, and fascism? This presentation will reimagine the “tragedy of the commons\,” not as Garrett Hardin (mis)understood it in his seminal 1968 essay of that name\, but in its current state. As LA burns and Trump ascends\, we will pause and ask tough questions about where open education has gotten us. \nSpeaker bio: Dr. Robin DeRosa is the Director of Learning & Libraries at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire (USA). She has previously been an English professor\, the chair of a customized major program for undergraduates\, and the director of a faculty development center. Robin is an advocate for public higher education and has been working on OER and open pedagogy initiatives at institutions around the world for more than a decade. SUMMARY:Keynote: Racing Towards a Wasted Future: Generative AI and the Resurgence of Nuclear Energy (Dr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia)
DESCRIPTION:As the potentials and promises of generative AI sweep into the field of Open Education\, educators and advocates have a holistic responsibility to think deeply and expansively about the known and still emerging environmental impacts of these technologies. Demand for energy by the hungry server farms that create so-called artificial intelligence is bringing damaging and dangerous energy practices back from the grave\, including the resurrection of previously shuttered coal and nuclear power plants. How can we as Open practitioners reconcile the long standing historical and contemporary violence of coal and nuclear power production with the desire to widely embrace and experiment with generative AI? This talk will review the most recent research on AI energy demands and the environmental impacts\, as well as provide a brief history and contextualization of the current issues with nuclear waste\, pollution\, and accidents in North America\, primarily in the United States and Canada. Attendees will be invited to reflect deeply on what we stand to lose and gain with the widespread adoption of generative AI in society\, and hopefully leave inspired to mindfully use generative AI\, with its current promise and future perils in mind. \n\n\nSpeaker bio: \nDr. Marco Seiferle-Valencia serves as Associate Professor and Open Education Librarian at the University of Idaho. SUMMARY:Shifting Power: University Openness and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the University of Regina for an Open Education Speaker Series online presentation with Dr. George Siemens\, University of South Australia/ University of Texas (Arlington) \nSession Description: Universities have become end-consumers of AI. Unlike previous technology innovations\, where higher education played an active role in technology developments and adoption\, learner and institutional use of AI has advanced with only minimal voice from the university system itself. While frontier labs\, such as Anthropic and OpenAI\, have focused on offering services for learners\, they’ve largely sidestepped the system\, leaving universities as spectators. This talk will highlight the urgent need for universities to collaborate around shared data\, technology\, and services to ensure that the mission of serving learners remains central in the adoption of AI in courses and classrooms. When universities collaborate and pursue open standards\, they have a sufficiently powerful voice to shape the products and services offered by big tech companies\, shifting power from closed systems to the network of education institutions. \n  \nPresenter bio: George Siemens researches how human and artificial cognition intersect in knowledge processes. He co-founded Matter and Space – a human development platform that responds to the systemic impact of AI on learning\, human development\, and wellness. He now serves as Chief AI Officer at SNHU. He is the founding Director and Professor of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at University of South Australia and developed the Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at University of Texas at Arlington. He has delivered keynote addresses in more than 40 countries on the influence of technology and media on education\, organizations\, and society. His work has been profiled in provincial\, national\, and international newspapers (including NY Times)\, radio\, and television. He has served as PI or Co-PI on grants funded by NSF\, SSHRC (Canada)\, OLT (Australia)\, Intel\, Boeing\, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the Soros Foundation. He has received numerous awards\, including honorary doctorates from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and Fraser Valley University for his pioneering work in learning\, technology\, and networks. He holds an honorary professorship with University of Edinburgh. Dr. Siemens is a founding President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (http://www.solaresearch.org/).  In 2008\, he pioneered massive open online courses (sometimes referred to as MOOCs). George is President of the Global Research Alliance for AI in Learning and Education (GRAILE – www.graile.ai).

SUMMARY:Copim Conference 2026! Exploring the future of community-led open access books
DESCRIPTION:This free\, two-day hybrid conference will bring together the people and projects shaping the future of equitable\, community-driven open access book publishing. Timed to coincide with the conclusion of the Copim Open Book Futures project in April 2026\, this gathering will look forward and debate: what’s next for community-led open access books? \n‘Community-led’ publishing can be difficult to define\, and even more difficult to implement. How to identify our communities (which are usually overlapping)\, make meaningful and practical connections with them\, and develop open book publishing infrastructures that are used\, governed\, and sustained by our communities has been an ongoing challenge that the two Copim projects have grappled with both theoretically and practically over the last six and a half years. During this time\, we have also engaged with established and brand-new networks that are trying to achieve similar things in different countries around the world. \nAt this conference we will be asking essential questions and forging collaborative strategies about what comes next for open access book publishing. Our panels and workshops will tackle topics ranging from the likely outlook for collective funding mechanisms in a higher education landscape characterised by austerity and political vandalism; the role of librarians in advancing Diamond OA book publishing; how to make open access books accessible to everyone who might want to read them; the fragmentations and gaps in metadata that inhibit the discoverability of OA books and how to overcome these; the preservation of PhD research in systems that are targets for hackers; how experimental book publishing will change in the coming years (and if it will change how we publish); and where the new scholar-led OA presses are coming from. We will also reflect on broader overarching questions throughout the event\, including how to sustain community activity amid political\, economic\, and institutional crises; how to identify shared goals and forge effective collaborations between groups\, networks\, and institutions that have different priorities and ways of working; and how to guard against the co-option and hollowing-out of community-based models\, language\, and organising strategies by commercial actors whose main priority is revenue generation. \nThrough lively panels and discussions\, we will tackle the most pressing themes for community-led open access books today\, with a focus on collective action. It’s an opportunity for people across the community-led open access ecosystem to chart the next phase of open access publishing\, together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe would love you to join us\, either in person (at Loughborough University | London) or online (via Zoom). SUMMARY:RIOS Institute Brew & Banter with Dr. Allison Lester
DESCRIPTION:Brew and Banter is RIOS’ monthly virtual series where community members come together for informal conversations about current topics in STEM education. Each session offers a chance for attendees to share updates\, spark new ideas\, and learn from one another in a relaxed\, welcoming space. \nToday’s guest is Dr. Allison Lester\, AI Literacy Professor at Arizona State University\, on  “Co-Creating with AI to Enhance Critical Thinking” \nAs generative AI reshapes higher education\, many instructors are responding with tighter rules and greater surveillance. This session offers a different entry point. Drawing on classroom-based inquiry and open pedagogical practices\, it explores how co-creating with AI can strengthen critical thinking when learning environments are built on trust\, shared norms\, and student authorship. Rather than focusing on rules or detection\, the session highlights co-creating AI policy with students as a meaningful learning activity. Participants will see how shared agreements about AI use can open space for ethical reflection\, student voice\, and deeper engagement. \nThrough classroom examples\, the session illustrates how students use AI to build tools and projects\, encounter ethical challenges\, and return to collective norms around verification\, responsibility\, and judgment. Designed for higher education faculty across disciplines\, this session offers practical strategies and a clear framework for integrating AI in ways that align with existing teaching values and support thoughtful\, student-centered learning.
