SUMMARY:Science Education for a Just and Sustainable World
DESCRIPTION:March 2-6\, 2026 marks Open Education Week and UN SDG Action and Awareness Week. Join BCcampus\, the BC Open Education Librarians\, University Canada West\, and Langara College for a celebration of both of these events with keynote speaker Dr. Karen Cangialosi. \n  \nAs global social and environmental problems grow ever more intractable\, we need transformative pedagogies that support our students to become critical\, creative social agents capable of building a more sustainable and just world. \nOpen Pedagogy has the potential to shift our traditional modes of teaching and learning towards practices that nurture students to be creators of knowledge focused on the global good. These hopes could be realized if we are responsive to the dual upheavals caused by AI and the attacks on higher education. We can educate our STEM students to become scientists\, and all of our students\, to become citizens that are cognizant of an uncertain and challenging future\, and work from non-traditional frameworks–those that resist competitive\, hierarchical\, exploitative models of science. \nKey to achieving this vision is teaching undergraduates how to center Open Science as the default for how science is practiced by deeply integrating Open Pedagogical practices that support students to address inherent inequities\, problems with data-sharing\, and other barriers to the adoption of Open Science. To that end\, the OCTOPUS project was developed to support higher education faculty and staff to create openly licensed materials that may eventually constitute a comprehensive undergraduate Open Science-Open Pedagogy program. \n  \nSpeaker bio\nDr. Karen Cangialosi is a passionate change agent\, dedicated educator\, and student advocate with national recognition in open education\, STEM ed\, and digital pedagogy. As a Professor of Biology at Keene State College (now emeritus)\, she brought open education into the biology curriculum and led campus-wide initiatives to make science education more affordable and inclusive. She now serves as Director of Open Education & Open Science at the RIOS Institute which promotes racial justice and openness in STEM education. Her work centers on transforming higher ed systems to better serve students\, especially marginalized students. Her Educause article\, An AI-Driven Optimism for Transforming Higher Education (It’s Not What You Think) considers the juxtaposition of AI in education. She continues to advocate for integrating Open Science and Open Education to reimagine how we teach\, learn\, and collaborate in STEM\, always with a focus on transparency\, justice\, and meaningful change. To that end\, she is project director for the OCTOPUS project (Open Collaboration for Transformative Open Pedagogy to support Undergraduate Open Science Education) a collaborative effort between the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium and the RIOS Institute.

SUMMARY:AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit
DESCRIPTION:The African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA)\, in collaboration with OER Africa\, is pleased to announce the 2026 AfLIA Open Education Week Virtual Summit\, scheduled for 3–4 March 2026. The virtual summit will convene librarians\, educators\, researchers\, policymakers\, and other stakeholders to explore how Open Education can expand access\, improve equity\, and transform learning outcomes across Africa. \nTheme: Open Education\, Open Possibilities\nOpen Education is reshaping the global learning landscape by expanding access to open educational resources and practices. It creates new pathways for inclusive\, quality\, and equitable education. This is particularly important for Africa\, which has the world’s youngest population\, with over 60 percent under the age of 25 and a median age of 19. Many young people and adult learners still face significant barriers to education due to inadequate resources and persistent equity gaps. Open Education presents an opportunity to address these challenges and to support Africa’s transformation into a global knowledge and innovation powerhouse. \nAfLIA strongly believes that African libraries have critical roles to play in bridging digital and resource gaps. Library professionals possess expertise in technology\, copyright\, and licensing\, positioning them as key partners in advancing Open Education. The 2026 virtual summit seeks to bring together stakeholders to share research\, case studies\, emerging models\, and visionary ideas that demonstrate how Open Education can enable transformative\, inclusive\, and equitable education across the continent. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wie verändert Künstliche Intelligenz die Open Education?
\nLeitung: Dr. Klaus Wannemacher\, Funda Seyfeli-Özhizalan\, Dr. Mathias Stein (alle HIS-HE e.V.)

SUMMARY:Open Education Solutions for Complex Times
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Regina for this special Open Education Week presentation\, “Open Education Solutions for Complex Times” with Anne-Marie Scott\, Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, BC. \nAbstract: Post-secondary institutions across Canada are facing a complex and uncertain future as they rapidly adjust to economic scarcity\, and it is clear that business-as-usual operating models will not support us to meet the challenges ahead. Compounding this is a tendency towards historical amnesia and constant reinvention; often the answers we need are already out there waiting to be discovered. The Commonwealth of Learning has a long history of working in contexts where complexity and uncertainty are the norm and has successfully used open education as an effective innovation toolkit. Drawing on examples\, this talk will outline the ways in which various elements of the open education ecosystem could be used to meet some of these big challenges in Canada head-on\, and (I hope) provide some inspiration to keep us moving forward. \nPresenter bio: Anne-Marie Scott is the Vice President of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Vancouver\, Canada where she supports COL’s mission and work in open learning for sustainable development across fifty-six countries. She is an internationally recognized expert in digital\, online\, and open education\, with leadership experience across higher education and the non-profit sector. She previously served as Deputy Provost of Athabasca University in Canada\, and before that spent nearly two decades at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. She serves on the Board of the Open Source Initiative and continues to teach in the Masters in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University in Canada.

SUMMARY:OEWeek Live! Beyond ChatGPT: GenAI in Action
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for our live streamed demos aimed at showing you first hand what Generative AI can do for educators that goes beyond the typical perception of the popular ChatGPT interaction\, and not just “prompt engineering”. \nWe have lined up three demos to perhaps make you say “Wow” but maybe also “Oh my ______”.  Watch the demos live streamed on YouTube and send your comments and questions directly through chat to the guests in studio. \nWe do not flip slides and show screenshots on OEWeek Live\, you will see screen shared live demos in action and than have an opportunity to contribute to a lively conversation. Our guests in the studio include: \nWatch What an Agentic Browser Can Do on a Student’s behalf\nAnna Mills English/Writing instructor and an early AI inquisitor\, will demonstrate something that may make your jaw drop. Beyond the chat interface we are used to are “agentic browsers” that can be set loose online to perform tasks for us. Anna has published several videos showing tools like Perplexity Comet\, ChatGPT Atlas\, and Google Gemini completing quizzes and replying to discussions in a Learning Management System\, all while logged in as a learner (without any direct involvement by the student). She argues for the platforms to provide better guardrails. \nAnna Mills teaches writing at College of Marin and previously taught at City College of San Francisco for 17 years. Her collection “AI Text Generators and Teaching Writing: Starting Points for Inquiry” is featured in the Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse; it includes a curated collection of articles\, a set of sample AI essays\, and a list of strategies for mitigating educational harms associated with large language models. She has also written an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook\, How Arguments Work: A Guide to Writing and Analyzing Texts in College\, which has been widely praised and used at over 45 colleges. As the English Discipline Lead for the Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges OER Initiative\, she leads professional development workshops on OER and collaborative annotation. Anna earned a master’s degree from Bennington College in Writing and Literature with a focus on nonfiction writing\, and her essays have appeared in journals such as The Writer’s Chronicle\, The Sun\, and Salmagundi. \nTwo Autonomous Agents Work Together to Generate OER\nYasin Dahi founder of Learnful will show us GenOER an experimental platform designed for educators to generate OER (including interactive H5P activities) that are fully designed and created by autonomous agents. The system deploys a powerful model of a pair two autonomous agents working together that simulate the principles of educational design — and Educator Agent and a Designer Agent. “GenOER is not just a tool — it’s a testbed for exploring one of the most pressing questions in open education today: what happens when the “author” of an open resource is an algorithm? I hope GenOER sparks discussion\, critique\, and collaboration across the OER community. This is an experiment\, but one that asks real questions about scale\, pedagogy\, licensing\, and the future of authorship.” \nYasin is the founder of Learnful\, an EdTech software company based in Waterloo\, Ontario\, Canada. He develops open-source solutions focused on open education and digital learning. His projects — including H5P Studio\, GenOER\, and Axiom — aim to democratize access to software tools for OER\, H5P\, and AI. \nAn OER Repository with an AI Assisted Form that Writes the Metadasta\nMuriel Peguret and Mirela Cherciov from the Camerise Project at York University’s Glendon Campus will be showing a new tool for using AI to generate metadata for OER that is submitted for Camerise K-12 Studio (a project being demonstrated in another OEWeek Event) \nMuriel Péguret received her PhD in FSL Applied Linguistics from Dalhousie University in 2009. She is an Associate Professor at York University in French Studies (Glendon College) and the Faculty of Education. She co-leads with Mirela Cherciov the Camerise K-12 Studio project (built by Learnful Labs Inc.)\, a repository of French as second language OER for K-12 teachers. \nMirela Cherciov is an Associate Researcher who is developing\, in collaboration with Muriel Péguret\, an OER platform for K-12 FSL teachers. She holds a PhD in French Studies from the University of Toronto. She conducted research on first-language attrition and bilingualism across the lifespan and has been teaching FSL and linguistics courses. \nWatch live here or return later to see the recording. \n\nImage Credits: Old TV – Time Tunnel – Cameron Highland flickr photo by liewcf shared under a Creative Commons (BY-SA 2.0) license remixed with OEW OEWeek image by Mario Badilla licensed CC BY 4.0 and Bart Fish & Power Tools of AI / Behaviour Power / Licenced by CC-BY 4.0

SUMMARY:Mediating Change: Community Networks for Open Education/ Catalyser le changement : réseaux communautaires pour l’éducation ouverte
DESCRIPTION:This webinar explores how communities of practice and mediation—and the tools they use to stay informed and build capacity in their profession—can become the driving force behind open professional learning in FSL and French-language education in minority contexts. Building on the Communautés Camerise model\, a Canadian project co-led by York\, Ottawa\, Laurier\, 10 school boards and partner organizations\, as an interinstitutional space for innovation and training\, we will highlight how formal and informal exchanges\, resource sharing\, and cross-sector collaboration (school boards\, postsecondary institutions\, and associations) can reduce professional isolation and transform “good ideas and/or practices” into adaptable\, transferable open educational resources (OER) for professional learning that can move across contexts. \nParticipants will examine how mediation across communities (bridging roles\, shared protocols\, and feedback loops) enables a shift from informal sharing to sustained co-creation of OER : educators exchanging practice-based knowledge\, iterating on resources\, and producing ready-to-use materials designed to be reused\, revised\, remixed\, and redistributed—principles at the heart of open education. The session will showcase a concrete “ecosystem” that communities can build and maintain together: a hub to design\, test\, and share professional learning resources and practices; a collaboration incubator to strengthen supportive networks among institutions and individuals; and a living observatory to continuously document needs and support evidence-informed improvement. \nDuring this webinar\, participants will discover practical community tools that support the development of open-content prototypes: pedagogical scanning/curation\, collaborative work and exchange spaces\, shared templates\, and lightweight documentation of pathways (from one classroom/ecosystem to another) that preserves context so others can responsibly reuse and modify resources. We will also discuss how a continuous experimentation mindset—including supportive tools such as AI-assisted planning aligned with competency-based assessment such as CEFR/DELF and curriculum—can accelerate iteration while keeping professional judgment\, inclusion\, and accessibility at the center of instructional design practices for developing teaching units. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will leave with: (1) a community exchange map identifying key mediation points and the tools that enable collaboration\, (2) an open prototype (resource\, workflow\, or professional learning content concept) to refine with peers\, and (3) a practical plan to sustain OER creation through community governance\, shared accountability\, and ongoing peer-supported upskilling.

SUMMARY:Opening the Book on Access: A Nursing Faculty’s First OER Experience
DESCRIPTION:I took a leap and implemented an OER textbook in my Population and Environmental Health Nursing course in Fall 2025. The results were positive in so many ways! My purpose is to encourage other faculty to improve textbook affordability and equity in nursing education. Here is my story: \nThis case study explores the implementation and impact of an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook in a prelicensure Population and Environmental Health Nursing course for senior nursing students. During the Fall 2025 semester\, a group of 39 students used an OpenStax OER textbook in a sixteen-week\, in-person course instead of a traditional\, commercially published textbook. \nThe goal of this project was to evaluate student satisfaction and academic outcomes related to using OER materials. Data were collected through a post-course survey that assessed satisfaction\, perceived learning\, and accessibility\, along with comparing Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) proctored exam scores to those of a previous semester’s cohort who had to purchase a traditional textbook. \nResults showed high student satisfaction\, with participants citing ease of access on the first day of class\, affordability\, and similar or improved learning experiences. Analysis of ATI scores indicated that students in the OER group performed as well as their peers using traditional textbooks\, suggesting that cost savings did not negatively impact academic performance. Switching to OER materials saved approximately $150 per student\, totaling nearly $6\,000 in savings for the entire cohort. This is especially important\, as over half of the program’s nursing students are Pell Grant-eligible\, highlighting the financial equity benefits of adopting OER resources in nursing education. Overall\, this case study endorses OER integration as a sustainable\, student-centered strategy to improve access\, affordability\, and achievement in undergraduate nursing education.
