DESCRIPTION:Many instructors are exploring open educational resources (OER) as a way to make course materials more affordable\, flexible\, and up to date. But what do students think? And what are the implications of their experiences on course design? \nIn celebration of Open Education Week\, join the Open Education Community of Practice for a conversation highlighting students’ perspectives on using open educational resources (OER) at Simon Fraser University (SFU). \nThis session will share key findings from two recent student surveys: one conducted by the Library and Learning Experiences Assessment & Planning (LEAP) focused on students’ experiences using open textbooks and other OER in the classroom\, and a student satisfaction survey from the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) exploring questions around student affordability\, course material costs and OER alternatives. SUMMARY:Kaïros and OER: education for all and economic balance
DESCRIPTION:Educational resources are not free for everyone. UNESCO‘s definition of OER\, while encouraging the free publication of OER and authorising their reuse\, adaptation and redistribution by others\, often deprives the authors of the original work of feedback from those who use them. One of the consequences of these OER being ‘released into the wild’ is the multiplication of efforts to update resources to prevent them from becoming obsolete. Our approach to Open Education is as follows: to enable the use of training resources developed as part of publicly funded projects in a learning environment\, and to ensure the sustainability of training courses by simplifying user contributions on the one hand\, and paid support services on the other. \nThis webinar will present the Kaïros platform (open source under AGPL licence)\, which provides free access to training (via Edu-ID for the academic community or by creating a local account for other audiences) and where the process of continuous improvement of the quality of educational resources takes place. Two training courses are already available for free access: Digital Skills and Critical AI Literacy for Learning (CAILL). To ensure the sustainability of content: In the Kaïros learning environment\, all stakeholders can contribute to preventing  obsolescence by reporting content that is unclear or has become obsolete. These reports are made directly by users and are processed weekly\, ensuring that resources are always up to date. The vision of IRN-ISSE is to build an international community of practice\, inviting researchers and specialists to collaborate for the greater good\, with a specific focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The mission of IRN-ISSE is to study\, support\, inform\, share\, and implement research globally to improve access to and quality of education worldwide. The goal is to stand together and learn with and from each other\, striving to remain at the forefront of innovative\, sustainable\, and seamless educational practice \nThe community has a global reach\, including Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, North America\, South America\, and India. The partnership is working on several initiatives\, such as: \n\nThe Seamless Learning Experience Design Model\, which identifies five themes relevant to designing a seamless learning experience: 1) seamless learning concepts\, 2) positive concepts\, 3) practical concepts\, 4) human concepts\, and 5) design concepts. With Maria Bonn and Will Cross\, Josh co-edited Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge (ACRL\, 2023) and co-founded the Scholarly Communication Notebook (SCN). A former presenter for the Open Education Network and OER Research Fellow\, he advocates for open access\, authors’ rights\, open education\, and issues related and is interested in OER as a vehicle for expanding scholarly communication knowledge and expertise. \n\n\nFrom 2016-2022\, he led open education programs at KU and remains engaged in open education advocacy in a variety of ways. He is published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication\, the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship\, PeerJ\, and PLOS Biology\, as well as other venues. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s in library and information studies from Florida State University. In his free time he enjoys cycling\, horror\, and culinary adventures\, especially tacos and barbecue. \nIn his keynote speech\, “Open but Not Finished: What We’ve Won and the Work Ahead\,” Bolick will summarize the shift to open\, examine emerging and lingering challenges\, and consider how the Open Movement can continue progress toward a more open research and teaching culture: \nWhile advocating for openness can feel like a struggle (and it often is)\, we’ve also achieved a lot over the last 20+ years. Open access scholarship and open educational resources and practices are normalized to a large degree\, and that’s worth celebrating. Still\, there are significant challenges to further growth\, including in hiring\, annual review\, promotion and tenure\, and other evaluation practices and the reward structures that shape and inform them. In this talk\, I will summarize the shift to open and what we’ve won\, examine emergent and lingering challenges\, and consider what we can do to continue pushing for more open research and teaching cultures\, with a focus on collaboration and support. \nIn addition to the keynote speech\, the symposium will feature presentations by 22 professionals from nine U.S. states\, as well as from Canada and Mexico. DESCRIPTION:At OEWeek 2025\, ScholarRX explored strategies for developing open education resources (OER) in health professions education\, grounded in the idea of a shared global curricular ecosystem. This year\, we take the next step. \nWhat happens when AI becomes a collaborative partner in building and localizing open curriculum? \nThis interactive workshop invites participants to move beyond discussion and into design. Using TAI (Teaching with Artificial Intelligence)\, ScholarRx’s AI teaching assistant\, attendees will experiment with AI-supported curriculum creation in real time. While ScholarRx’s roots are in health professions education\, this workshop is designed for educators and instructional designers across higher education. \nRather than positioning AI as a tool that does the writing for you\, we frame it as a partner to help educators: \n\nClarify learning objectives\nStructure modular learning experiences\nGenerate formative questions\nTransform existing materials (e.g.\, PowerPoints\, PDFs\, lecture transcripts)into structured learning experiences\nLocalize and adapt materials for different learners\nTranslate and expand open resources responsibly\n\nParticipants will work individually or in small groups to develop a draft open learning module relevant to their own context\, with TAI as a co-creator.
