SUMMARY:Open for Student Success Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University for our 4th annual Open Education Week Celebration\,\nwhere professionals and students unite with the common purpose to learn and share insights about open and affordable education. \nThe Open for Student Success Symposium is free\, online\, and open to all\nand will take place on March 4\, 2026 from 9:30am to 4:30pm ET. \nRegister now! \n\n\n\nOur distinguished keynote speaker this year will be Josh Bolick\, Head of the David Shulenburger Office Of Scholarly Communication & Copyright at the University of Kansas (KU). With Maria Bonn and Will Cross\, Josh co-edited Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge (ACRL\, 2023) and co-founded the Scholarly Communication Notebook (SCN). A former presenter for the Open Education Network and OER Research Fellow\, he advocates for open access\, authors’ rights\, open education\, and issues related and is interested in OER as a vehicle for expanding scholarly communication knowledge and expertise. \n\n\nFrom 2016-2022\, he led open education programs at KU and remains engaged in open education advocacy in a variety of ways. He is published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication\, the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship\, PeerJ\, and PLOS Biology\, as well as other venues. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s in library and information studies from Florida State University. In his free time he enjoys cycling\, horror\, and culinary adventures\, especially tacos and barbecue. \nIn his keynote speech\, “Open but Not Finished: What We’ve Won and the Work Ahead\,” Bolick will summarize the shift to open\, examine emerging and lingering challenges\, and consider how the Open Movement can continue progress toward a more open research and teaching culture: \nWhile advocating for openness can feel like a struggle (and it often is)\, we’ve also achieved a lot over the last 20+ years. Open access scholarship and open educational resources and practices are normalized to a large degree\, and that’s worth celebrating. Still\, there are significant challenges to further growth\, including in hiring\, annual review\, promotion and tenure\, and other evaluation practices and the reward structures that shape and inform them. In this talk\, I will summarize the shift to open and what we’ve won\, examine emergent and lingering challenges\, and consider what we can do to continue pushing for more open research and teaching cultures\, with a focus on collaboration and support. \nIn addition to the keynote speech\, the symposium will feature presentations by 22 professionals from nine U.S. states\, as well as from Canada and Mexico. A full list of sessions can be found at https://research.library.gsu.edu/open. \nRegister now for free at https://forms.office.com/r/aZFktr12z3.

SUMMARY:Open Education as Anti-Fascism: Building Democratic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, higher education is facing growing authoritarian\, exclusionary\, and anti-democratic tendencies\, not only in politics\, but also in digital infrastructures\, platform economies\, and dominant narratives about technology and innovation. At the same time\, Open Education is often framed primarily as a technical or economic solution\, i.e.\, more efficient content production\, wider access\, lower costs. \nIn this session\, we will discuss how openness can function as a form of democratic resilience in times of polarization and techno-fascism.

SUMMARY:La recherche en éducation ouverte: regards croisés francophones

SUMMARY:Faculty OER Practitioner Thank You
DESCRIPTION:Scottsdale Community College’s OER Committee is sending an email to students enrolled in courses using OER and inviting them to fill out a brief form thanking their instructor for choosing to use OER in place of costly learning materials. \nThe students are asked to share what they do with the money they’d otherwise have spent on textbooks and also what they like most about having OER in their course. We then collect these responses and print up personalized thank-you placards that are placed on the faculty’s office door as a surprise for Open Education Week.

SUMMARY:From Shared Curriculum to AI Co-Creation: A Hands-On Workshop with TAI
DESCRIPTION:At OEWeek 2025\, ScholarRX explored strategies for developing open education resources (OER) in health professions education\, grounded in the idea of a shared global curricular ecosystem. This year\, we take the next step. \nWhat happens when AI becomes a collaborative partner in building and localizing open curriculum? \nThis interactive workshop invites participants to move beyond discussion and into design. Using TAI (Teaching with Artificial Intelligence)\, ScholarRx’s AI teaching assistant\, attendees will experiment with AI-supported curriculum creation in real time. While ScholarRx’s roots are in health professions education\, this workshop is designed for educators and instructional designers across higher education. \nRather than positioning AI as a tool that does the writing for you\, we frame it as a partner to help educators: \n\nClarify learning objectives\nStructure modular learning experiences\nGenerate formative questions\nTransform existing materials (e.g.\, PowerPoints\, PDFs\, lecture transcripts)into structured learning experiences\nLocalize and adapt materials for different learners\nTranslate and expand open resources responsibly\n\nParticipants will work individually or in small groups to develop a draft open learning module relevant to their own context\, with TAI as a co-creator. Participants are encouraged to bring an existing slide deck\, document\, or transcript they’d like to reimagine. \nWorkshop Outcomes \n\nBy the end of this session\, participants will:\nDevelop a draft open learning module using AI-supported instructional design\nIdentify where AI meaningfully supports\nand where it should not replace — educator expertise\nUnderstand practical considerations around licensing and attribution in AI-assisted OER development\nGain hands-on experience using TAI in a structured instructional workflow\n\n

SUMMARY:Sharing Research Differently: Mobilizing Knowledge with Open Educational Resources (OER) / Partager la recherche autrement : mobiliser les connaissances à l’aide des ressources éducatives libres (REL)
DESCRIPTION:Open educational resources (OER) are transforming the way we teach\, learn\, and share knowledge. But what exactly are OER and why are they important for advancing knowledge mobilization? \nIn this bilingual session\, we’ll explore the fundamentals of OER and their role in making knowledge creation more collaborative. You’ll hear from OER creators about their experiences\, and we’ll highlight strategies to showcase OER contributions in your dossier for tenure\, promotion\, or funding applications.

SUMMARY:What Can I Share—and Where? Digital Literacy\, Open Licenses\, and Faculty Publishing Pathways
DESCRIPTION:Faculty create a wide range of digital materials—articles\, syllabi\, datasets\, lecture media\, public scholarship\, and creative work—but questions about copyright\, licensing\, and “where this work belongs” often create barriers to sharing. \nThis Open Education Week workshop at DePauw University introduces digital literacy concepts through the lens of open licenses and publishing pathways. Participants will explore how Creative Commons licenses work\, how to decide what level of openness is appropriate for different kinds of work\, and where faculty can publish or share materials—from journals and institutional repositories to open platforms and community-aligned publishing models. Designed for a liberal arts context\, the session emphasizes faculty agency\, ethical knowledge sharing\, and practical decision-making that supports teaching\, scholarship\, and public impact.

SUMMARY:Teaching on the CUNY Academic Commons
DESCRIPTION:The CUNY Academic Commons is a WordPress/BuddyPress network designed for and by faculty\, staff\, and students at the City University of New York (CUNY). The Commons is designed to support faculty initiatives and build community through the use(s) of technology in teaching and learning. The free exchange of knowledge among colleagues across the university is central to better educating the student body and expanding professional development opportunities for faculty research and teaching. \nSince its founding in 2009\, CUNY faculty have taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses on the CUNY Academic Commons. Faculty use course sites to host OER course materials\, foster student engagement with one another and wider publics\, and develop assignments that move beyond a standard final paper or reading response. This workshop will provide an overview of teaching on the Commons\, discuss the affordances and values of teaching on an open source\, community-developed platform\, and highlight several courses that serve as models of open pedagogy in action. \nThis workshop is open to the public as part of Open Education Week\, hosted by OE Global. \nLearn more about Spring 2026 events on the Commons here and read about our recent developments to improve our community WordPress/BuddyPress network. \nRegister for “Teaching on the CUNY Academic Commons” workshop here.

SUMMARY:Open for Antiracism: Trauma informed approaches to open education
DESCRIPTION:Open for Antiracism is a special project of OE Global that has been providing professional development programming across California Community colleges on OER and Open Pedagogy for over 6 years. \nIn this 2-part session\, you’ll first hear from our program directors\, Laura Dunn and James Glapa-Grossklag\, on how the antiracism and equity landscape has changed since the program’s beginnings in 2020\, the impact that OFAR has had on students and faculty\, and how OFAR is applied in the classroom. \nIn the second half of our session\, OFAR coach\, past participant\, and professor of child development at Cerro Coso Community College\, Tyrone Ledford shares how he has adapted OFAR’s program in his trauma informed approach to teaching child development. Tyrone will be presenting how to blend anti-racist curriculum and trauma informed teaching strategies to create classroom environments that are empathetic and inclusive to students of diverse backgrounds who have experienced trauma. \n\nTyrone Ledford is an educator and equity advocate committed to student success and community empowerment. An award-winning Umoja Counselor and two-time Faculty of the Year at Cerro Coso Community College\, he created the Trauma-Informed Care specialization program to better support students impacted by trauma. Beyond the classroom\, Tyrone advances equity through his family-owned community garden\, where he provides students with access to fresh food\, education\, and hands-on experience growing their own food while promoting food security\, sustainability\, and self-sufficiency.\nLaura Dunn is the director of Open for Antiracism and faculty of religion at the University of Hawaii. Laura’s current research examines how indigenous knowledge systems intersect with cross cultural contemplative practices as a means to reclaim identity in post- and neo-colonial contexts. She is an award-winning writer and scholar\, Newhall Fellow\, Interreligious Collaborative Research Fellow\, and recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Association for Asian Studies Publication Grant. \nJames Glapa-Grossklag is Dean\, Educational Technology\, Learning Resources\, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons (USA). He serves as Technical Assistance Provider for the California Community Colleges’ Zero Textbook Cost Degree Program\, the largest-ever public investment in OER. He co-directs the Open for Antiracism Program\, is an OER Fellow for the Michelson 20MM Foundation\, and co-leads\, with Carnegie Mellon University\, a national training program to help faculty from broad-access institutions learn to teach with generative AI. James is past President of Open Education Global\, the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources\, and Directors of Educational Technology in California Higher Education. James served as a trainer on OER for the US Department of State in the Middle East and North Africa and was Innovation Scholar in Residence at RMIT University in Australia. He held the appointment of Global OER Ambassador for ICDE 2017-21. SUMMARY:Participatory Publishing - Zine Assignments as Open Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Zines are a self-published medium created by collaging existing materials (e.g. images\, text\, etc.) with self-created content. Zines are published in simple photocopied and digital formats for open sharing. The practice of remixing\, revising\, and redistribution has been a part of zine culture since its creation. Zines provide a space where information authority can be questioned by building knowledge within communities regardless of the level of perceived expertise. This session will address how zine culture aligns with open pedagogical practices and how you can integrate zine-making into your course. \nParticipants at this session will be introduced to: \n\nA brief history of zine-making and open culture\nAn overview of how zines align with open pedagogical practices\nMethodologies to engage students in zine creation and culture\nResources to integrate zine-making into course assignments

SUMMARY:From H5P to LMS: Boosting Active Learning and Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this Brock University workshop will learn a step-by-step process to boost student engagement through “low-stakes” interactive assessments by learning how to embed\, update\, and manage H5P content using freely available tools like Lumi. Leave the “technical headache” behind and take full creative control of your digital classroom by integrating H5P activities into your LMS. Note: This workshop is specifically designed for educators whose LMS does not have a built-in H5P integration. \nThis workshop will be lead by Vanja Stojanovic\, Learning Strategies Librarian at Brock Library.

SUMMARY:Doing Dangerous Work: The ASCCC IDEA Framework
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a focused conversation on the IDEA Framework with featured guest Tiffany Lanoix of the ASCCC Open Educational Resources Initiative (OERI)\, a statewide effort of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. \nIn this session\, Tiffany will briefly unpack what IDEA (Inclusion\, Diversity\, Equity\, and Anti-racism) means in the context of educational resources and why the framework was created to support faculty-led review and revision of course materials. She’ll highlight why Open Educational Resources (OER) are especially powerful for this work\, since open licenses allow faculty to revise materials to better reflect their community contexts. We’ll touch on how this work can scale from individual course revisions to broader cultural change and what to expect from the upcoming IDEA assessment process launching in summer 2026. Whether you’re deeply involved in OER or simply curious about aligning your materials with your values and your students’ needs\, this session offers practical insight and an accessible entry point into IDEA-informed teaching and learning. \nRegister using the link below.

SUMMARY:ADAPT and AI: An Instructor's Success Story
DESCRIPTION:This session demonstrates practical ways to build and deploy homework in LibreTexts ADAPT using WeBWorK algorithmic problems. \nWeBWorK uses a complex Perl-based language called PG\, and writing questions in PG can be challenging. Most PG examples online focus on math\, physics\, and engineering. As a life science professor\, I want to bridge that gap by bringing algorithmic biology problems\, which are often more descriptive than numerical\, into LibreTexts ADAPT using WeBWorK. \nIn this session\, I will show new instructors how to use AI to turn a conceptual homework idea into a fully functional WeBWorK problem\, without needing to know how to code. The talk will demonstrate how large language model agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex can produce working WeBWorK problems when given solid documentation and required to check output using a local renderer. \nA brief course case study will show how a problem concept can become a working WeBWorK assignment through an iterative workflow.
