SUMMARY:Opening the Book on Access: A Nursing Faculty’s First OER Experience
DESCRIPTION:I took a leap and implemented an OER textbook in my Population and Environmental Health Nursing course in Fall 2025. The results were positive in so many ways! My purpose is to encourage other faculty to improve textbook affordability and equity in nursing education. Here is my story: \nThis case study explores the implementation and impact of an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook in a prelicensure Population and Environmental Health Nursing course for senior nursing students. During the Fall 2025 semester\, a group of 39 students used an OpenStax OER textbook in a sixteen-week\, in-person course instead of a traditional\, commercially published textbook. \nThe goal of this project was to evaluate student satisfaction and academic outcomes related to using OER materials. Data were collected through a post-course survey that assessed satisfaction\, perceived learning\, and accessibility\, along with comparing Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) proctored exam scores to those of a previous semester’s cohort who had to purchase a traditional textbook. \nResults showed high student satisfaction\, with participants citing ease of access on the first day of class\, affordability\, and similar or improved learning experiences. Analysis of ATI scores indicated that students in the OER group performed as well as their peers using traditional textbooks\, suggesting that cost savings did not negatively impact academic performance. Switching to OER materials saved approximately $150 per student\, totaling nearly $6\,000 in savings for the entire cohort. This is especially important\, as over half of the program’s nursing students are Pell Grant-eligible\, highlighting the financial equity benefits of adopting OER resources in nursing education. Overall\, this case study endorses OER integration as a sustainable\, student-centered strategy to improve access\, affordability\, and achievement in undergraduate nursing education.

SUMMARY:Leading the Way: How NorQuest Became an Open Education Leader
DESCRIPTION:Open Education at NorQuest College has changed dramatically since 2016\, when we first began encouraging faculty to incorporate open images into their online courses. What started as a small initiative has expanded into a major campus initiative. \n  \nOur Reimagine Higher Education plan positioned NorQuest as a world leader in open education\, with ambitious goals: publishing 15 open textbooks by 2030\, hosting the Open Education Global 2023 conference\, and becoming a textbook-cost-free institution by the end of the decade. \n  \nWe are not only meeting these goals—we’re surpassing them. \n  \nIn a panel discussion with open stakeholders at NorQuest\, we will explore the impact of open education at our college and speculate on next steps in our open journey.

DESCRIPTION:Uitnodiging themasessie in de Open Onderwijs Week  \nGraag nodigen we uit voor een online informatiesessie over twee nieuwe tools die het vinden\, verrijken en delen van open leermaterialen eenvoudiger maken.  \nOER-wizard\, een tool om materialen laagdrempelig te vinden en te delen in collecties. \nDemonstratie OER wizard door Sylvia Moes.\nDe OER-wizard is een tool waarmee je content uit andere repositories kunt doorzoeken\, en op laagdrempelige wijze via SURFsharekit kunt verrijken met onderwijskundige metadata. Op dit moment kun je via de OER-wizard inhoud zoeken naar DOAB-boeken\, Open Textbooks\, Medpix en Europeana.\nZie ook het artikel Steeds meer open tekstboeken op de communitypagina Open Tekstboeken\n\nSneller open leermaterialen vinden met de OER Discovery Tool\nDemonstratie OER Discovery Tool door Michel Saive\nDe bibliotheek van Universiteit Maastricht ontwikkeling een nieuwe tool die het zoeken naar open onderwijsmaterialen veel eenvoudiger maakt. Tijdens de demonstratie laat Michel zien hoe deze met behulp van AI automatisch relevante zoekwoorden op basis van cursusomschrijvingen. De tool doorzoekt vervolgens vijf grote repositories\, waardoor de docent binnen twee minuten open leermaterialen de verbinding vindt bij de thema’s die in de gekozen cursus aan bod komen.\nZie ook het interview  Zo geeft Universiteit Maastricht open leermaterialen een vaste plek in het onderwijs    \nWe laten tijdens de bijeenkomst zien hoe beide tools werken\, zodat je weet wat voor mogelijkheden er zijn om open leermaterialen te vinden en hoe je de OER-wizard zelf kunt inzetten in contact met het onderwijs.   \nNa afloop van de demo’s is er een gelegenheid om vragen te stellen.  \nHartelijke groet\, namens experts Npuls en de werkgroep Bibliotheken en Open en Online Onderwijs\,  \nIrma van Houts en Brenda Lems

SUMMARY:Kaïros and OER: education for all and economic balance
DESCRIPTION:Educational resources are not free for everyone. UNESCO‘s definition of OER\, while encouraging the free publication of OER and authorising their reuse\, adaptation and redistribution by others\, often deprives the authors of the original work of feedback from those who use them. One of the consequences of these OER being ‘released into the wild’ is the multiplication of efforts to update resources to prevent them from becoming obsolete. Our approach to Open Education is as follows: to enable the use of training resources developed as part of publicly funded projects in a learning environment\, and to ensure the sustainability of training courses by simplifying user contributions on the one hand\, and paid support services on the other. \nThis webinar will present the Kaïros platform (open source under AGPL licence)\, which provides free access to training (via Edu-ID for the academic community or by creating a local account for other audiences) and where the process of continuous improvement of the quality of educational resources takes place. Two training courses are already available for free access: Digital Skills and Critical AI Literacy for Learning (CAILL). To ensure the sustainability of content: In the Kaïros learning environment\, all stakeholders can contribute to preventing  obsolescence by reporting content that is unclear or has become obsolete. These reports are made directly by users and are processed weekly\, ensuring that resources are always up to date. To ensure financial sustainability: We will discuss the economic model for these courses\, which is based on an institutional strategy of sustainability rather than disposability: free access to courses for end users\, with paid training  certificates\, and institutional services billed to the institutions that use them in their training programmes (e.g. interfaces for tracking cohorts of learners). \nSpeaker: Prof. Agrégé Jean-Michel Jullien\, Responsable EDUDL+\, UniDistance Suisse
