Made with CC: Open Business Models

← Back to list of events

At its core Open Education involves a commitment to adopting practices and sharing education resources in a Commons. This goes against long instilled notions of autonomy, competition, and Market like business practices adopted by education in recent times. One of the most frequent questions I get in my Creative Commons work is, “How do I earn a living, pay the bills, and keep the lights on if I openly license my work and give it away for free?” Or specifically for open education, “When the one-time special funding runs out how does the open initiative sustain itself? What are the models for sustainability?”

"Made With Creative Commons" is a Kickstarter funded book, coming out in 2017, investigating and documenting the successful practices and strategies of businesses and organizations around the world who use Creative Commons as a central part of what they do. This session will report out on the findings. Twenty-four case studies of organizations who are both part of the Commons and financially sustainable will be shared. Analysis will describe an overarching framework and practical advice for planning and operating initiatives that bridge the Commons with the State and the Market.
