Making language technology for Indigenous languages

In this talk, I talk about “language technologies” – tools that people create to achieve their goals about language and using language – and how modern, digital language technologies like Google Translate or Amazon Alexa work. People often ask “Are tools like these possible in languages like Nêhiyawêwin? How would we make them?” I talk a little about the requirements for different technologies, and efforts to lower those requirements so that people can more easily make language technologies for their own languages. Presenter: Patrick Littell is a Research Officer with the National Research Council of Canada, in the Digital Technologies Research Centre.
