SUMMARY:Beyond Mandates: Fostering a Culture of Open Access Book Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Attempts to incentivise open access for books have\, to date\, largely centred around policy interventions that mandate publication in open formats and venues. Today we have OA book policies from funders in the UK\, Netherlands\, Austria\, Norway\, Ireland\, and Portugal; and the Council of the EU has said that for publicly funded research\, open access should be “the norm” for monographs as well as articles. \nBut the big stick of mandates can be a blunt instrument and very often add a heavy compliance burden on scholars and HE institutions. A more effective and lasting avenue to OA for books might be to embed open research and publishing cultures within universities and more widely. But currently\, HEIs often incentivise closed access publishing (deliberately or passively) by cleaving to the status quo in terms of recognising career advancement and in terms of publishing venues and how those venues are supported. How might this paradigm be shifted towards openness? \nThis session will feature short presentations from expert scholars\, librarians and publishers\, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. We will address these central questions: how can we incentivise researchers to publish their books OA? How can institutions signal more strongly that publishing openly should be important\, and reward those who do so? How might a culture of open research be fostered within and beyond the book publishing process? \nChanging the way the sector approaches reward and recognition for scholars could be a big driver for change in open access book publishing – going beyond mandates to offer positive reasons to embrace openness. \nJoin us for this online event\, presented in partnership by Copim and the Knowledge Equity Network. Featuring contributions from guest speakers\, Lucy Barnes (Senior Editor and Outreach Coordinator\, Open Book Publishers)\, Gavin Beattie (Associate Director: Research & Impact\, Libraries & Collections\, King’s College London)\, Jill Claassen (Section Manager\, Scholarly Communication & Research\, University of Cape Town)\, Kevin Sanders (Open Access Engagement Lead\, Open Book Collective) and Chaired by Sally Dalton (Head of Library Research Services: Open Research\, University of Leeds).

SUMMARY:Open Science: Climate Change & the Global Commons (Knowledge Equity Network)
DESCRIPTION:Join Knowledge Equity Network for an inspiring session on how commons-based approaches to Open Science can catalyse the impact of climate research\, challenge misinformation and enable solutions focussed research for a sustainable future. \nIn this session\, we’ll explore how Creative Commons licensing plays a vital role in making climate research freely accessible. By enabling researchers worldwide to access and build on this knowledge\, we open the door to innovative solutions. For example\, efforts are underway to ensure all research cited in the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Report is openly accessible – providing a powerful tool to challenge misinformation and foster new research into climate change and its mitigations. \nWe’ll also dive into the significant role of Wikipedia\, with its 24 billion monthly page views\, as a trusted source of climate-related information. Managed by a collaborative community of editors and contributors\, Wikipedia ensures up-to-date research is available to both the public and AI systems that rely on its entries. \nIn this session\, we’ll be joined by guest speakers\, Monica Granados (Director of Open Science\, Creative Commons) and Tatjana Baleta (Wikimedia Visiting Fellow for Climate\, University of Exeter: Global Systems Institute)\, in conversation with Nick Sheppard (Open Research Advisor\, University of Leeds). \n\nIPPC Reports: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intergovernmental_Panel_on_Climate_Change#List_of_all_reports\nCreative Commons Open Climate Data Project: https://creativecommons.org/about/open-science/open-climate/\nCreative Commons Licencing: https://creativecommons.org/\nWikimedia and universities: contributing to the global commons in the Age of Disinformation: https://insights.uksg.org/articles/10.1629/uksg.509

SUMMARY:Bridging knowledge gaps through collaboration: Wikimedia in South Africa and the UK
DESCRIPTION:This Knowledge Equity webinar focuses on advancing knowledge equity through Wikimedia initiatives and open education\, with a particular emphasis on South African and UK perspectives. During this session we will explore how collaborative efforts between Wikimedia communities\, Open Education and Open Research networks can: \n• Empower local knowledge creation and representation.\n• Address systemic barriers to access and participation in digital knowledge platforms.\n• Highlight successful models of community engagement\n• Foster cross-regional collaboration to build inclusive\, sustainable knowledge ecosystems. \nThe session will look at practical strategies for increasing the reach of Wikimedia\, the importance of language diversity\, and the ethical dimensions of open knowledge production. We will also reflect on how global partnerships can support local and regional initiatives. \nTuesday 24 March\, 12:00 – 13:00 GMT / 14:00 – 15:00 SAST \n  \nGuest speakers: \nHerschal Jackson is the inaugural Executive Director of Wikimedia South Africa (Wikimedia ZA)\, leading the chapter’s transition toward greater professionalisation of its operation\, strategic growth and the amplification of its presence within the global Wikimedia community. \nPreviously serving as Executive Coordinator of Wikimedia ZA\, he strengthened organisational systems\, advanced program delivery\, and facilitated the 2023 Strategic Planning Meeting. He has played key roles in major initiatives\, including co‑organising WikiIndaba 2024 and leading on SWiP Phase 2\, a multilingual knowledge‑equity project supporting student contributors across South Africa and neighbouring SADC countries\, working in their own languages. \nHerschal was instrumental in guiding the development and ratification of Wikimedia ZA’s 2024–2026 strategy and established governance subcommittees to support its implementation. His leadership continues to shape a resilient\, collaborative\, and future‑focused chapter for Wikimedia ZA. \n— \nLucy Crompton-Reid joined Wikimedia UK as Chief Executive in October 2015\, where she has spearheaded a focus on equity and inclusion on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Lucy leads the charity’s work in advocating for a healthy online information ecosystem\, and promoting Wikimedia as an important tool in the development of vital media and information literacy skills. \nLucy sits on the British Library Advisory Council\, the Board of Advisors for the Khalili Foundation and the External Advisory Board for AI For Collective Intelligence (AI4CI)\, a UKRI National AI Research Hub. She also Chairs the local arts charity where she lives in rural Scotland.
