SUMMARY:We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the TU Delft annual We Like Sharing photo competition a bit of idea brainstorming happened in OEG Connect as a call for other individuals\, organizations to remix the idea and run their own version of it. Hence we are doing it here at OEGlobal. \nOur call for photos is: \nFor We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal we invite anyone to share a photograph that communicates a visual metaphor for the potential\, benefits\, characteristics of openly sharing. We seek especially photos from all parts of the world that convey something special about that place. \nIf you would like to participate\, Then\, upload the image and provide the basic information in our We Like Sharing form including title\, location\, how to credit yourself\, a description for web accessibility\, and the Creative Commons license you wish to apply to your photo. \nWe will add them to the We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal flickr album\, with all attribution\, licensing information included. There may or may not be prizes\, but we certainly will be reusing and attribution images in future OEGlobal communications. Sharing is its own reward\, right? \nAnd please follow the TU Deflt We Like Sharing which is already on the calendar for this year’s Open Education Week. \nAnd if you want to run your own WLS (We Like Sharing) from your place on the globe\, we have no rules per se\, but see suggestions in OEG Connect. \nOur call for photos will run the full month of March\, and we will track visits and comments in our flickr album– but we will actually likely just leave it open year round.  Because we like We Like Sharing! \n\nThe image used in this event s one by Bea de los Arcos from the original TUDelft We Like Sharing – Claddagh ring flickr photo by B. de los Arcos shared under a Creative Commons (BY) license.

SUMMARY:OE Week Live! Special Session on AI Language Translation (of AI for Teachers)
DESCRIPTION:One of the key opportunities for open content (and fast moving developments) is the use of AI is for language translation– potentially of great value for increasing access. How is it faring in practice? Is it viable for enough of thew world’s languages? How does one manage / implement a language translation project? \nThis special session came organically from a discussion in OEG Connect. And ironically or perhaps appropriately\, the content it arose from is the new AI For Teachers open textbook by Colin de la Higuera and Jotsna Iyer made available initially in English\, French\, German\, Slovenian\, and Italian. \nWithin that discussion came word of interest from Sushumna Rao to translate this into Telugu leading to further email conversation between Colin and Sushumna\, all of which seemed appropriate for an open conversation like we do for the OE Week Live webcasts. We just decided to make it happen! \nIf you have an interest in the issues and practices of AI for language translation\, or are working on a project like this\, we would like to have you be part of this discussion. \nWatch live on YouTube and interact with guests in the studio or return later to enjoy the recordings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJemwqO0SDw \nOr better yet\, if you want to be part of the studio conversations with Sushumna amd Colin\, indicate this session in our OE Week Studio signup form. \nSee the full schedule of OE Week Live sessions https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/oe-week-live/6391

SUMMARY:Higher Education for Good Chapter Conversation with Paola Corti and Chrissi Nerantzi
DESCRIPTION:With the open release into the world of the monumental project Higher Education for Good (HE4Good) co-edited by Laura Czerniewicz and Catherine Cronin\, we are pleased to bring you for Open Education Week\, a series OE Week Live conversations focusing on deeper discussions of individual chapters. \nIn this session we spend time exploring Chapter 11\, Calm in the storm\, with authors Paola Corti and Chrissi Nerantzi plus co-editor Catherine Cronin. \nAs an example of the innovative format of HE4Good\, this chapter is a combination of an audio podcast with a reflective activity aimed at using metaphors from natural places to situate ourselves in these times. \nWe propose that our contribution could be used as an alternative conversation trigger\, in whole or in part. The use we make of both audio and written visual language offers alternative ways to uncover and discover novel connections. The format we have chosen is an open invitation to immerse the listener and/or reader with us and our thinking and to encourage conversation. Readers/listeners can use a range of metaphors from nature and the world around you to explore\, discuss and debate challenging issues and opportunities with other educators and students. The metaphors can be linked to higher education experiences and practices to better understand what is important\, to see the higher education landscape with fresh eyes\, and to identify and embrace positive ways forward. \nThe chapter is a guided discussion about the ideas of the education landscape using metaphors of Paola Corti’s photo of Valtellina valley. \nValtellina valley\, Italy. Photo by Paola Corti.
https://pxhere.com/it/photo/1667214\, CC0\nWe hope to have an open discussion to explore and inquire about the metaphor shared in the chapter\, share our own visual metaphors\, and contemplate how this activity might help more of us find the calmness in the storms that keep coming. How are metaphors useful for understanding building the better futures presented in HE4Good? \nThis session will be streamed live to YouTube and you are invited to watch there and to send messages to our guests in the OE Week Live studio. Join us at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIUKjQ2UaOA (this link is also where you can find the recording afterward). And if are interested in contributing to the conversation with our guests\, indicate  this session on the OE Week Live sign up form. \nParticipants are asked to listen/review the chapter in advance of this session https://doi.org/10.11647/OBP.0363.1 and to consider adding comments to the chapter using Hypothes.is web annotation \nWe also will\, continue conversations with the authors in OEG Connect \nIf you would like to share an open licensed photo of a place that you think could work as a conversation starter\, please post ahead of time to our We Like Sharing @ OEGlobal collection and we might use it during the session. \n  \nWe look forward to having you be part of this HE4Good Chapter Conversation

SUMMARY:Higher Education for Good Chapter Conversation with Jim Luke
DESCRIPTION:As 2024 highlight project  and exemplar of open collaboration\,  Higher Education for Good (HE4Good) has been out in the world a few months. With the support of co-editors Laura Czerniewicz and Catherine Cronin\, we are pleased to bring you for Open Education Week\, a series OE Week Live conversations focusing on deeper discussions of individual chapters. \nIn this session we invite you to discusser and explore the concept and meaning of the “open knowledge commons” described by author Jim Luke in Chapter 6\, Closing the factory: Reimagining higher education as commons. \n“The chapter encompasses the evolution of three imaginaries of higher education\, two of which have repeated historically across the globe. In the early 21st century\, an opportunity for a third imaginary has emerged\, one that holds great promise and I propose needs the attention and efforts of both academics and the larger society.” Jim describes the characteristics of the  two historic imaginaries as the “elite knowledge commons” and the “knowledge factory” and then challenges us to imagine what he calls the “knowledge commons.” \nJoin the conversation with Jim and co-editor Laura Czerniewicz to probe his construct of social imaginaries for higher education\, and the evolution he describes for the first two\,  the “elite knowledge commons” and the “knowledge factory.” How does these align or not with the desire to create that better future of higher education? Do we know we are “in the water”? How can academia and society shift the mode forward to the open knowledge commons? \nThis session will be streamed live to YouTube and you are invited to watch there and to send messages to our guests in the OE Week Live studio. Join us at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFj8MpH3VGg (this link is also where you can find the recording afterward). And if are interested in contributing to the conversation with our guests in the studio\, indicate this session on the OE Week Live sign up form. \nParticipants are asked to review chapter  6 in advance of this session  and to consider adding comments or questions to the chapter using Hypothes.is web annotation. \nWe look forward to having you be part of this HE4Good Chapter Conversation.

SUMMARY:OE Week Live! Developing Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Literacy: A student-led panel
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite you to an open online live streamed event organised by students from the MA in Digital Education within the School of Education at the University of Leeds and students from the MSc in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with Open Education Global during Open Education Week 2024. \nOn the 6th of March 2024\, 4 pm UK time\, you are all warmly welcome to join us to discuss and debate methods and ideas to develop students’ Generative AI literacy. \nGenerative Artificial Intelligence (or\, for short\, GenAI) has gathered significant attention since January 2023 and discussions around its potential use in education have become widespread. Multiple research papers and articles are focusing on this topic\, while a new aspect of it is currently gaining prominence – the question of how students can become AI-literate. As we contemplate the possible revolution that AI can bring to the education field\, we should reflect more on how well-equipped students are to navigate this ever-changing terrain. \nThis event presents a chance to engage with students\, hear their voices and concerns about the use of GenAI in Higher Education and embrace their ideas to promote AI literacy. Focusing on uniting as a community of educators and students\, we aim to initiate an open\, critical\, and creative discussion on students’ GenAI literacy. \nThis event aims to expand both personal and collective perspectives and foster collaboration between educators and students in co-deciding efficient ideas to promote students’ GenAI literacy focusing on practical implications\, valuable opportunities\, and ethics concerns. Through this discussion\, all will have the opportunity to dynamically explore this crucial topic. How can we as students control and leverage GenAI\, so that it will not deceive\, prevail\, or weaken us? \nThe live streamed discussion\, scheduled to last one hour\, will be hosted by OEGlobal during Open Education Week. A student panel discussion will be held and\, subsequently\, an open session for questions and answers will be conducted to actively involve the audience in the dialogue. \nWatch live on YouTube where you can send questions and comments to the panel\, or see the recording afterward\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjJsuEZ6VtQ \nPanel members\n\nSarah Nutt (host)\, MA Student in Digital Education\, School of Education\, University of Leeds\, UK\nMaria Pavlopoulou\, MA Student in Digital Education\, School of Education\, University of Leeds\, UK\nMatt Sanders. MSc Student in Digital Education\, University of Edinburgh\, Scotland\nSamantha Watson\, MA Student in Digital Education\, School of Education\, University of Leeds\, UK\nStefanos Alifierakis\, MSc Student in Digital Education\, University of Edinburgh\, Scotland\n\nAll students\, educators and the wider public with an interest in GenAI literacy are welcome to join and engage in followup conversation in OEG Connect. \nSee the full schedule of all OEG Live Sessions https://connect.oeglobal.org/t/oe-week-live/6391

SUMMARY:In the OEG Voices Podcast Studio with Maha Bali
DESCRIPTION:As we have done the past few years during Open Education Week\, we “open” the OEG Voices podcast recording studio so you can listen in and participate in the conversations. By being there live you can hear the podcast before we produce it! \nJoin us in the OEG Voices studio Wednesday March 6 when we are fortunate to welcome Maha Bali\, professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at The American University in Cairo (AUC). Maha was recognized in 2023 with an Individual OE Award For Excellence in the Educator category. \nThe podcast will be recorded in Zoom (cameras never required) and space in the studio is open for those who register to secure a seat \nIn this conversation with Maha we plan to ask about her approaches and philosophy as an open educator with her students at AUC (and beyond)\, with the faculty she supports (globally)\, and honestly\, the world in general. Very likely we will discuss her current practices and insights on critical AI literacy. \nBut you never know where an interesting conversation will go\, perhaps we can talk about the braveness of being bad at crochet. \nWe are counting on lively conversation and you can be part of the action\, even just to listen in by signing up to be in the studio or wait until it appears at https://voices.oeglobal.org/

SUMMARY:Curiosity Unleashed: Experimenting with Open Pet-agogy (with Cats!)
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is merely a playful demo and test of the OE Week Calendar! \nAre you ready to let your curiosity lead the way\, just like a cat chasing a laser pointer? Join us for a paws-on workshop where we explore the playful\, experimental world of Open Education through Open Source tools. This interactive session encourages participants to embrace their inner feline — inquisitive\, daring\, and playful — as we scratch the surface of what’s possible when Open Education meets Open Source software. \nThrough collaborative activities and a whisker of whimsy\, we’ll navigate the fundamentals of open education\, experiment with open-source tools\, and discover how to integrate them into our own teaching and learning contexts. Every step of the way\, we’ll lean into the metaphor of cats: curiosity\, adaptability\, and the knack for landing on our feet when trying new things. \nWhether you’re a seasoned open education advocate or just dipping a paw into the waters\, this workshop is for anyone eager to pounce on new ideas\, play with innovative tools\, and create impactful learning experiences. \nWorkshop Goals: \n\nDiscover the Playground: Introduce participants to the foundational concepts of Open Education and Open Source software\, purring over their value and potential in learning environments.\nExperiment Like Cats: Encourage playful experimentation with open-source tools and platforms that support Open Education. Participants will gain hands-on experience and insights into how these tools can be used to create engaging and equitable learning experiences.\nCollaborative Catnip: Foster a sense of community among participants by engaging in collaborative\, interactive activities that emphasize the power of shared knowledge and resources.\nCuriosity Empowered: Equip participants with the confidence to approach Open Education and Open Source tools as a sandbox for innovation and creativity.\n\nActivities Overview: \n\n“Chase the Laser Pointer”: An icebreaker activity to explore common challenges in education and how open resources and tools might solve them.\n“Tinker with the Toybox”: A hands-on session where participants play with Open Source tools\, from learning management systems to collaborative content creation software.\n“Catnip Collaborations”: Small group activities to brainstorm open education projects\, fostering a playful but purposeful approach to creating new educational resources or initiatives.\n“Purrspectives”: A wrap-up reflection where participants share what they’ve learned and discuss next steps for implementing Open Education in their contexts.\n\nWhat to Bring:\nYour sense of curiosity\, an open mind\, and a readiness to play! Optional: a favorite cat photo or story to share during our “feline inspiration” moments. \nJoin us to unleash your creative instincts\, pounce on new tools\, and leave with a renewed commitment to making education accessible and engaging for all! 🐾 \nCreate your own event or version of an OER that includes cats by asking GenAI to create an image and descriptive text\, then share it in our thread in OEG Connect. \n\nDisclosure:This is a farcical entry created solely for testing\, generated with ChatGPT (link) as it is best for creating fabricated content. The prompt was “You are organizing an online workshop about the value of experimenting with Open Education using Open Source software\, the activities have an element of play\, and makes the use of the metaphor of cats. Write a description of a workshop with goals\, and make many feline references.”
