SUMMARY:Finding and Using Open Educational Resources
DESCRIPTION:Whether adapting an existing OER\, transitioning your course materials into the Open\, or creating an OER from scratch\, you will likely be using materials created by others. Because Open doesn’t just apply to the finished resource but all of the elements within the resource\, it is important to ensure that everything you include in your OER respects licensing requirements. In this session\, we will walk you through some strategies for finding open content to adapt or include within your learning resources\, as well as best practices for attribution. We will also provide you with guidance for developing your own search plan and documentation\, including a workflow and templates for curating resource details. \nThis session will cover: \n\nIdentifying open educational resource repositories and online spaces for finding content\nDeveloping a search plan for finding resources across platforms\nDeveloping a workflow for curating resource details for use in an open educational resource project\nIdentifying terms of use and licensing of resources and attribution practice

SUMMARY:Participatory Publishing - Zine Assignments as Open Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Zines are a self-published medium created by collaging existing materials (e.g. images\, text\, etc.) with self-created content. Zines are published in simple photocopied and digital formats for open sharing. The practice of remixing\, revising\, and redistribution has been a part of zine culture since its creation. Zines provide a space where information authority can be questioned by building knowledge within communities regardless of the level of perceived expertise. This session will address how zine culture aligns with open pedagogical practices and how you can integrate zine-making into your course. \nParticipants at this session will be introduced to: \n\nA brief history of zine-making and open culture\nAn overview of how zines align with open pedagogical practices\nMethodologies to engage students in zine creation and culture\nResources to integrate zine-making into course assignments

SUMMARY:Enshittification: How the Internet Went Bad and How to Get it Back with Cory Doctorow
DESCRIPTION:The collapse of the internet into “five giant websites\, each filled with screenshots of text from the other four” wasn’t inevitable. From privacy to harassment to garden-variety ripoffs\, the internet’s degradation was the result of identifiable policy choices that can – and must – be reversed. Learn how they broke the internet – and how we can fix it. \nSpeaker\nCory Doctorow (craphound.com) is a science fiction author\, activist\, and journalist. His latest book is THE LOST CAUSE\, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. His most recent nonfiction book is THE INTERNET CON: HOW TO SEIZE THE MEANS OF COMPUTATION\, a Big Tech disassembly manual. Last April\, he published RED TEAM BLUES\, a technothriller about finance crime. He is the author of the international young adult LITTLE BROTHER series. He is also the author of CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM (with Rebecca Giblin)\, about creative labor markets and monopoly; HOW TO DESTROY SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM\, nonfiction about conspiracies and monopolies; and of RADICALIZED and WALKAWAY\, science fiction for adults\, a YA graphic novel called IN REAL LIFE; and other young adult novels like PIRATE CINEMA. His first picture book was POESY THE MONSTER SLAYER (Aug 2020). His next novel is THE BEZZLE (February 2024). \nHe maintains a daily blog at Pluralistic.net. He works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation\, is a MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate\, is a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Open University\, a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. SUMMARY:Re-Imagining Assessments for Social and Epistemic Justice Through the Lens of Open Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Assessment practices are a powerful way for educators to signal to students what is important in their learning journey and allows students to demonstrate their learning and competency. At the same time assessments through their design and deployment can also create epistemic and social injustices for traditionally marginalised students. Drawing on principles of open pedagogy\, this session will explore ways of reviewing and designing assessments that create enabling conditions for socially just assessment practices that contribute to students’ sense of inclusion and for them to be active participants in a community of learning.

SUMMARY:Finding\, Using\, and Creating Open Educational Resources
DESCRIPTION:Whether adapting an existing OER\, transitioning your course materials into the Open\, or creating an OER from scratch\, you will likely be using materials created by others. Because Open doesn’t just apply to the finished resource but all of the elements within the resource\, it is important to ensure that everything you include in your OER respects licensing requirements. In this session we will walk you through some strategies for finding open content to adapt\, or include within your learning resources\, as well as best practices for attribution.

SUMMARY:Students as Creators - Pressbook Enabled Assignments as Open Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Open pedagogy applies the principles of openness to teaching and learning\, giving students greater control and agency in their own education as well as aligning their work with the academic mission of the University. It combines strategies and technologies that support collaboration\, co-creation\, and shared knowledge. There are many tools that support open pedagogical practices and Pressbooks\, an open text publishing tool\, is one that supports students as creators of knowledge. \nThis session will explore practical approaches to using Pressbooks for open assignment and will include: \n\nGuidance on development of course assignments\, including skillsets needed by students to engage in publishing\nExamples of course assignments and published works by UBC students
