SUMMARY:Fostering Inclusive Education through Open Educational Practices
DESCRIPTION:There is a widespread consensus that open education encompasses both Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP)\, with the understanding that sharing learning is crucial. According to the Cape Town Open Education Declaration (2007) “…open education movement combines the established tradition of sharing good ideas with fellow educators and the collaborative\, interactive culture of the Internet. It is built on the belief that everyone should be free to use\, customize\, improve and redistribute educational resources without constraint.”. \nTo realise these freedoms\, we must consider open educational practices from a social justice perspective. Questions arise: \n\nCan open education promote inclusivity and diversity?\nWhat guidance does Open Education offer our higher education community?\nAnd what impact does adopting Open Educational Practices have on student learning experiences and teaching practices?\n\nTo address these questions and delve into deeper discussion\, we will kick off UTS 2024 Open Education Week with a panel discussion event to shed light on Fostering inclusive education through Open Educational Practices. On this panel\, we welcome Associate Professor Glenda Cox\, UNESCO Chair on Open Education and Social Justice\, University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Yasser Tamer\, The American University in Cairo (Egypt). Glenda and Yasser will share their insights and experiences to address this topic.

SUMMARY:Accessibility in Open Education with H5P
DESCRIPTION:We continue to celebrate Open Education Week at our second event focussed on Accessibility and H5P in open resources. During this event\, we will be hearing from two fantastic speakers from Australia and Canada. They will share their experiences working on open resources and how to make them accessible and interactive through H5P and Pressbooks. \nDuring this event\, we will:\n\nexplore why accessibility and inclusion are so important to openness\,\ndiscuss why H5P has been adopted for Open Textbooks\,\noutline some of the affordances and barriers to accessibility and openness with H5P\,\nexplain why taking openness as an attitude is important to accessible resources.\n\n\nKey speaker: Nikki Andersen\nNikki Andersen\, Open Education Content Librarian at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ)\, champions open educational practices\, specializing in open textbooks via the Pressbooks platform. With a diverse background\, including roles as a Copyright Officer and Diversity and Inclusion Officer\, Nikki edits the Australasian Open Educational Practice Digest. She contributes to CAUL’s Open Educational Resources Professional Development Program Project Team and ASCILITE’s Open Educational Practice Special Interest Group. \nNikki\, who identifies as disabled and Deaf\, advocates for inclusion\, diversity\, equity and accessibility (IDEA)\, recognized by awards for creating accessible digital learning environments. Her work intersects open educational practice\, social justice\, and student success\, highlighted by her editing of the 2022 Australian Edition of Enhancing IDEA in OER. \n\nKey Speaker: Simon Lolliot\nDr. Simon Lolliot\, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia\, earned his doctorate in social psychology at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. His research focuses on the role of intergroup contact in reconciliation and the impact of secondary transfer effect\, “a phenomenon whereby contact with members from one outgroup not only improve attitudes towards that outgroup\, but to other outgroups as well.” At UBC\, he collaborates with Drs. Toni Schmader and Andrew Baron\, exploring ingroup identity\, multiculturalism\, and diversity beliefs. \nSimon introduced H5P activities to UBC’s open psychology textbook\, investigating interactivity’s impact on learning and advocating for screen-reader accessibility. Passionate about optimising teaching materials\, he emphasises H5P’s potential to support inclusive education. \nRegister now via Humanitix

SUMMARY:Open Pedagogy: Paving the Way for Assessment Reform
DESCRIPTION:Assessment reform has been a prominent topic in higher education for a long time\, gaining even more traction with the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) in learning and teaching. GenAI has pushed assessment from emphasising output to prioritising processes. This shift has prompted the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)\,  Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education\, to require higher education institutions to demonstrate how they are securing assessments to mitigate the new challenges. However\, despite the growing discussions around assessment security\, there has been little attention given to open pedagogy\, let alone renewable assessment. \nGiven the significant value of student-generated OER and renewable assessment observed in both literature and practice\, this session aims to provide the audience with practical strategies for developing and implementing authentic assessments. \nRegister via Humantix \nPresenters\nDr Julie Lazzara\, Maricopa Community Colleges\, USA\n \nDr Julie Lazzara has served as a dedicated psychology educator at Maricopa Community Colleges in the Phoenix area since 2006. Since becoming a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources (OER) in 2015\, she has utilized OER in her courses and actively contributed to the development of several OER textbooks and resources. Passionate about student engagement\, Dr. Lazzara incorporates active learning\, service-learning\, and collaborative projects into her teaching. Her research focuses on the impact of open pedagogy\, renewable assignments\, social annotation\, and OER’s impact on teaching approaches. Dr. Lazzara has also actively participated in numerous OER initiatives and projects\, including the UNSDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship and the Open Education Group OER Research Fellowship. \nDr Virginia Clinton-Lisell\, Associate Professor\, Education\, Health & Behavior\, University of North Dakota\n \nDr. Virginia Clinton-Lisell began her career in education as an ESL teacher in New York City. She then obtained her PhD in Educational Psychology with a minor in Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota where she was trained in educational research. She has published over 60 articles in education research and teaches courses in education research\, program evaluation\, and psychological foundations of education. Her current research focuses on the psychology of reading comprehension and open education. She is a Rose Isabella Kelly Fischer Endowed Professor. \n  \n  \n\nImage attribution\nBanner: Zoom background 1 by OEGlobal is licensed under CC BY 4.0. SUMMARY:Open Wiki Assignments for Authentic Learning
DESCRIPTION:Many student assignments are written for one person\, read once\, and then never read again.  \nIn this session\, Dr. James Neill\, from the Disciple of Psychology\, University of Canberra\, will challenge that model by exploring how open wiki assignments can turn student work into useful\, open knowledge.  \nRather than producing disposable assessments\, students can curate their work using Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) sister projects such as Wikipedia\, Wikiversity\, and Wiki Commons. Student editing of one of world’s most widely used knowledge platforms helps develop critical research skills\, meta-knowledge\, and communication skills by writing for a real audience.
