Opening Education

Open education and open educational resources can make education more affordable and accessible for students and create new opportunities for instructors to adapt and customize resources for their teaching practice, context, and discipline. Open education can enable us to reconsider the role of students in our classes and consider ways that they can be partners, co-authors and to share their work beyond the classroom.

Session Goals

* Learn about the potential value of open education and open education resources

* Identify how resources can be adapted for different disciplines and teaching contexts

* Learn how to include and engage students in open education practices

Lucas Wright is an Open Education Advisor at BCcampus, in this role, he supports the BC Open textbook project. This involves advocating and supporting open education broadly in the BC post-secondary institutions and managing individual textbook and OER projects. Previous to this role he was an Educational Consultant at the University of British Columbia where he guided and supported instructors using learning technology and active learning and open learning in their courses.

Krista Lambert is an Open Education Advisor at BCcampus where she coordinates the development of the Zed Cred (zero-cost for students for textbooks) programs. Previously, she was an instructional designer, in the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation at the Justice Institute of British Columbia. Her interests include open learning, simulations and promoting technology implementation with faculty and students. She holds a MEd. in Educational Technology and Learning Design from SFU.

Day/Time: Wednesday March 7th 12.30-1.30 pm
