Affordable Learning Solutions: Southern University Open Library for Education

←Back to list of resources

The Southern University System (SUS) of Louisiana (under the Leadership of Professor Moustapha Diack ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the California State University (CSU)/MERLOT (Dr. Gerry Hanley, MERLOT Executive Director) to adopt and implement the CSU Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) (See: cool4ed.org) funded partially by the State of California to foster the adoption of Open Education Resources (OER) for improving College Affordability in California. The SUS replication, dubbed Southern University Open Library for education was to serve as a model for adoption by other Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United State (suol4ed.org). The adoption and Southern University piloting has been succesful in recent years and many other HBCUs are in the planning process of deploying their own AL$. A network of HBCUs for AL$ is being constituted with the leadership of Southern University. It is important to note that this effort involves Higher Education in Africa (HEA). MERLOT recentltly signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Virtual University of the Republic of Senegal (VUS) to deploy an OER Open Library targeting French West Africa. Other efforts are being initiated in Nigeria, targeting English speaking Africa.

Diack and Hanley initiated in April 2017 a HBCUs Summit for AL$ and Quality Online Programs as part of the INNOVATE International conference. This Annual conference is co-hosted by the OLC (Online Learning Consortium) and the MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching). You are invited the attend INNOVATE 2018 and the HBCUs Summit (See Program: https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/attend-2018/innovate/program/hbcu-summit/).
