Teaching on the CUNY Academic Commons
Wed March 4, 2026 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm GMT

The CUNY Academic Commons is a WordPress/BuddyPress network designed for and by faculty, staff, and students at the City University of New York (CUNY). The Commons is designed to support faculty initiatives and build community through the use(s) of technology in teaching and learning. The free exchange of knowledge among colleagues across the university is central to better educating the student body and expanding professional development opportunities for faculty research and teaching.
Since its founding in 2009, CUNY faculty have taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses on the CUNY Academic Commons. Faculty use course sites to host OER course materials, foster student engagement with one another and wider publics, and develop assignments that move beyond a standard final paper or reading response. This workshop will provide an overview of teaching on the Commons, discuss the affordances and values of teaching on an open source, community-developed platform, and highlight several courses that serve as models of open pedagogy in action.
This workshop is open to the public as part of Open Education Week, hosted by OE Global.
