EDI-Focused Adaption of an Intro to Psychology Textbook – A Panel
March 4, 2024 @ 8:00 pm - 8:50 pm GMT
Have you ever thought, “if only this open textbook included more diverse examples?” or “I wish this book was easier for my students to read.” The BCcampus Intro to Psychology open textbook EDI adaptation is trying to address these issues and more!
This project adapted one of the most highly adopted open textbooks in BC to include more:
- Indigenous content,
- diverse examples,
- underrepresented scholars, and
- student contributions.
The team comprises contributors from across 5 post-secondaries in BC, including a group of student illustrators tasked with bringing complex ideas and examples to life through graphics.
In this panel, four of the team members will discuss:
- What does an EDI adaptation mean or look like?
- What was the process of finding and incorporating marginalized voices, including Indigenous content?
- What have been some of the design and content considerations?
- How have students been engaged in the project?
- How does one build a cross-institutional team?
- What lessons have been learned? And what are some of the wins and successes?
Hosted by: Darcye Lovsin, Information Literacy and Copyright Librarian, JIBC
Panelists:
- Shirley Hutchinson, Psychology Lecturer, UBCO
- Amelia Shi, Psychology Instructor, College of New Caledonia
- Jessica Motherwell, Lead Author & Sessional Instructor, JIBC
