Barcamp Basics: How Unconferences Work
Sat February 21, 2026 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am GMT

How do Barcamps work – and why are they such a powerful format for open education and peer learning?
In this compact, practice-oriented workshop, participants will learn the core principles of the Barcamp format: an open, participant-driven learning approach where the agenda is created by the community itself.
The workshop is especially designed for people who
-
are new to Barcamps or unconferences,
-
want to understand how Barcamps support Open Educational Practices (OEP),
-
plan to participate in, facilitate, or organize Barcamps in educational contexts.
Together we will explore:
-
What defines a Barcamp and how it differs from traditional conferences
-
The “golden rules” of Barcamps and participant-driven sessions
-
Typical phases of a Barcamp (arrival, session planning, sessions, documentation)
-
How Barcamps foster openness, participation, and peer-to-peer learning
-
Practical tips for participating in or hosting your first Barcamp
The workshop combines short inputs with discussion and exchange. No prior experience with Barcamps is required.
The format and content are based on many years of experience from the OERcamp community and openly licensed materials.
