Wikipedia & Open Pedagogy
Tue March 3, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm GMT

For decades Wikipedia was stigmatized because of its self-governed and open approach to content creation and revision. After 25 years since its launch, Wikipedia has offered a unique opportunity for students in open pedagogical environments. This Brock University session will address the incorporation of Wikipedia assignments into post-secondary courses, popular initiatives that might appeal to instructors and students, and important considerations for instructors who are contemplating incorporating Wikipedia into their course design. Hosted by a Wikipedian/Librarian who brings 10 years of experience editing, teaching, and researching Wikipedia, participants will leave this session with an understanding of what is required to build Wikipedia into an existing or new course, what they can expect from students, and what students can expect to learn.
This Workshop will be lead by Denise Smith, Head, Research Lifecycle, Brock Library
