Practicing Democratic Education with a Course-Based Custom GPT and Dialogic Prompts
March 6, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm GMT
This hands-on interactive workshop presented by Dr Olga Shugurova explores the innovative use of AI such as custom GPT models and dialogical prompts (Matusov, ChatGPT4, Smith & Shugurova,2023) to create democratic open educational resources (OERs).
The use of conversational AI in education has shown promising results in enhancing learning outcomes (Chiu et al., 2023). A systematic review by Henry et al. (2021) highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary and critical approach to AI literacy. Labadze et al. (2023) reported that chatbot technology significantly improves learning achievement, explicit reasoning, and knowledge retention.
Dr Shugurova will demonstrate how educators can build their own course-based GPT that caters to diverse student goals, interests, needs and creates a psychologically safe learning environment.
- Participants will learn how to:
- Design and fine-tune custom GPT models for specific educational contexts
- Craft effective dialogical prompts that engage students and promote critical thinking without any technical skills
- Integrate course content to create comprehensive, interactive learning experiences that inspire learning
- Address ethical considerations and potential biases in this GPT-powered educational pathway
The workshop will showcase the practical examples of custom GPT applications in various disciplines, highlighting their potential to democratize education. It will also discuss strategies for ensuring accessibility and inclusivity when implementing these technologies.
Through hands-on activities and live demonstrations, attendees will gain practical experience in developing their own course-based GPT. The session will conclude with a collaborative discussion on the future of AI in open education and its implications for democratic education.
This workshop is suitable for educational leaders, educators, instructional designers, and educational technologists interested in exploring the intersection of AI and open education. Participants will leave with actionable insights and resources to begin implementing custom GPT in their own educational contexts.
